daughter of William Norment and Mary Richerson. She was born Abt. 1749 in

born. There were two John Johns of Columbia Co., GA who died between 1792 and 1805.
Will of John Johns - Columbia Co., GA (Wills 1790-1793 from Will Book "A"
Columbia Co., GA) In the name of God Amen, I, John Johns, carpenter of the State of Georgia and
County of Columbia being low in body, but of sound mind and memory believing my
departure is at hand, do make this my last will and testament. First I commit my
precious soul into the hands of the Father of Spirits believing he is able to
keep it til that day, my (?) body I commit to the dust to be buried in a
Christian manner at the discretion of my friends. As to the property that the
Father of Mercies has committed to my care, I dispose of in the following manner
and form. First, I give and bequeath to my well beloved wife, Elizabeth, the
tract of land where I now live during her life, the whole of the property to
remain in her hands til the youngest child comes of age, then she to take one
third of the movable property. The remainder of the movables to be equally
divided among my children that is to say Mary Elizabeth, James, Thomas, John
James, Francis, Robert, Nancy and David and at the death of my wife her thirds
and the land be equally divided among (?) heirs. I constitute, ordain, and
appoint my wife, Elizabeth, my eldest son, James and my son-in-law John
Culbreath my sole executors of this my last will and testament, revoking and
disallowing all others, as witness my hand and seal in the year of our Lord one
thousand seven hundred and ninety-two November 27. Test. John Johns (seal) D. Marshall, James Divine, Joseph Marshall Research note: John Johns, son of John Johns and Judith Tanner; all siblings'

came from Price George Co. Another John Johns of Columbia Co., GA - probated Jan 1805 John Johns of the State of Virginia in King and Queen Co. heirs: wife Nancy sons: William, John exrs: William Jones (State of Georgia) William Bates (State of Virginia) Notes for Elizabeth Norment: (Robert, Sr. and Robert, Jr. both drew in the 1805 lottery but neither won.
In the same lottery Elizabeth, widow of John, James and John of Columbia county
drew but did not win.)(A Robert paid taxes in Columbia Co. in 1806, and a Robert
won land in Baldwin Co. in 1807. Robert Johns witnessed wills in Columbia Co. in
1817. Robert Johns of Columbia Co. won in the 1827 lottery.) It's interesting
that the orphans of John Johns won land in Wilkinson Co. in the 1807 lottery. Note: The fact that there was a Robert Sr. in 1805 when only one Robert Johns
from this family was known to be of age is an indication that the father (or
brother) of Elizabeth's husband, John Johns, was probably Robert Johns also. Children of John Johns and Elizabeth Norment are: 6 i. David8 Johns. Notes for David Johns: One David Johns was in Amite Co., MS by 1816, when he signed
a memorial ( a petition complaining against proposed removal of
settlers from the lands )

Columbia Co., GA. May be a cousin of Mary Johns. Notes for John Culbreath: Was his father Joseph Culbreath and mother Feraby Hazel? If so, he was born
12 Oct 1776 in Edgefield Co., SC and he died there on 12 Feb 1845. Children of Mary Johns and John Culbreath are: + 19 i. William Grady9 Culbreath, born Abt. 1790

1812. He married Frances Loflin 04 Nov 1801 in Columbia Co., GA, daughter
of Daniel Loflin. She was born Aft. 1781 in VA. Notes for John Johns, Jr.: One record shows his name as "John James Johns." No source given. Another John Johns descends from another John Johns of Columbia Co., GA; he
could be either a cousin or an uncle, but is likely closely related. Is this the John Johns of Wilkes Co., GA? He is listed as "friend" to Robert,
which does not sound like "brother." Or, could this be the father of James Johns, William Johns, Easter Johns and
Jane Johns who lived for a while in Walton Co., GA? Or is this the father of
John Calvin Johns b 1818 in Madison Co., GA? Joanne Barnes jabarnes@ix.netcom.com compares circumstantial evidence of this
family with that of hers in hopes of learning if this John Johns is the father
of William L. Johns who was born 9 Sep 1802 in Georgia, and grandfather of
Benjamin Franklin Johns, born 9 Mar 1830, who became the Speaker of the
Mississippi House of Representatives and resided in Amite Co., MS. Both William L. Johns and Rachel Johns' names can be found repeatedly in the
Ebenezer Baptist Church minutes. A cousin, and a descendant of Johns, also ended up in Amite Co., MS In the 1850 Amite Co. census, two elderly women are found living in William
L. Johns' household: Frances Anderson and Jane Courtney. Joanne believes that
Frances is William L.'s mother, who married (1) John Johns in 1801 (2) James
Anderson in 1812. "Fanny" Anderson's name first appears on the Ebenezer Baptist
Church minutes when she was about 56, 21 Nov 1836. The names of FRANCES ANDERSON, JANE COURTNEY and RACHEL JOHNS are listed in
the Ebenezer Church Minutes on the same day, as though they were sitting
together. RICHARDSON JOHNS' name can be found in the church minutes, also. Notes for Frances Loflin: Frances married 2nd James Anderson in 1812. Child of John Johns and Frances Loflin is: + 26 i. William L.9 Johns, born 09 Sep 1802 in GA;
died 09 Jan 1883 in Amite Co., MS. 12. Elizabeth8 Johns (John7, John6,
John5, William4, Richard3, Richard2,
William1) was born Abt. 1777 in Mecklenburg Co., VA. She married
John H. Walker 16 Apr 1797. He was born 25 Dec 1763 in MD, and died 19 Jun
1836 in Monroe, Walton, GA. Child of Elizabeth Johns and John Walker is: 27 i. Elizabeth9 Walker. 15. <Unknown>8 Johns (John7, John6,
John5, William4, Richard3, Richard2,
William1) was born Bef. 1783 in Mecklenburg Co., VA. Notes for <Unknown> Johns: One of the children of John Johns and Elizabeth Norment (Richardson) is the
likely father of Richardson Johns of Amite Co., MS. Child of <Unknown> Johns is: + 28 i. Richardson9 Johns, born 18 Jul 1806 in GA;
died Apr 1892 in Olio, Amite, MS. 16. Col. Robert8 Johns (John7, John6,

Prob. SC, daughter of John Clarke and Elizabeth <Unknown>. She was born Aft.
1783 in Edgefield Dist., SC, and died 1836 in AL. He married (2) Sarah
Connelly 29 Jan 1846. She was born 19 Nov 1799 in SC. Notes for Col. Robert Johns: Marriage and Death Notices From the South Western Baptist Newspaper

married George Autry and is included in this file. She is likely a neice of this
Robert Johns and is shown by some to have been born in Edgefield Dist., SC. The
name Autry shows up in this Robert John's son William John's will. Another Georgia family of Johns is shown here to help research: (this family is NOT known to be related to ours) Calvin Johns, Sr. was born in Camden Co. Ga in 1818, the son of George and
Anna Johns. married Sallie Griffin, ca 1844. She was one of three daughters of
James Griffin of Camden. They were parents of Jack, b. 1845. Sallie died in
1861. On 30 June 1866 Calvin married Martha Raulerson in Sanderson, FL. They
were the parents of six children. Extracted from the "Pioneers of Wiregrass GA",
Vol. XXV, No. 1 Notes for Frances Clarke: She died of injuries falling from a horse in 1836, about a year after the
family's move to Alabama. One of Robert and Frances (Clarke) Johns daughters, Eliza (Johns) Hart, told
her daughter, Ann (Hart) Buckalew of the perils her family faced on the trip to
Alabama. (pp. 37-38 OUNGBLOOD-ARMSTRONG & ALLIED FAMILIES). Mrs Buckalew wrote
what her mother told her and the story was printed in the "LaFayette Sun" in
1902 and re-printed on October 15, 1930. She wrote: "My parents moved from Edgefield, S.C. with the family of my grandfather,
Col. Robert Johns in the fall of 1834. They moved in wagons, camping out at
night, landing at Cusseta, Alabama on Dec. 25, 1834. "When the trouble arose between the whites and the Indians almost every man
carried his family over the river to West Point, seeming to think they would be
safe. Mr. Daniel carried his family over and my parents moved into the hotel and
took charge during his absence. In a short time a family in Russell County was
massacred. The husband and father was not dead when found; he was carried to La
Fayette and died at the hotel. My mother was the only white woman in town for a
long while so great was the excitement and rumors reaching town almost daily
that the Indians were crossing the river. My mother preferred to stay with my
father and share his fate rather than suffer the uneasiness she knew would be
hers away from him. The people had many frights even after their return. At one
time the Indians were expected and the women and children were put in the Court
House at night while the men stood guard. My mother has often told me that she
sat on the floor two nights and held me in her arms with my older sister asleep
by her side. After that, for some time, wagons were loaded with the inhabitants
most valuable possessions, the women and children, one man with each wagon,
going into the most dense forest they could find, having no fire or light and
afraid to speak above a whisper. My mother went out one night and the grass was
nearly as tall as a man. She said she was more afraid of snakes than of
Indians." http://mykindred.com/cloud/TX/pages/b183.htm Notes for Sarah Connelly: This may be Sarah O'Connelly married 1st William Dorsey Buckalew and 2nd
Robert Johns in 1846. One record, however, shows her dying 11 Feb 1842, making
the date of the second marriage suspect. Children of Robert Johns and Frances Clarke are: 29 i. Jane9 Johns. She married Seaborn Gray. + 30 ii. Eliza Johns, born 22 Jan 1806 in Edgefield Dist.,
SC; died in Eldonada, LA. 31 iii. William Johns, born Abt. 1808 in Edgefield Dist., SC;
died Aft. Mar 1865 in Chambers Co., AL. Notes for William Johns: Will of William Johns: Know all men by these presents that 1. William Johns. of the

married Mildred Luckett 16 Dec 1852, daughter of David Luckett. She was
born 19 Dec 1825 in KY, and died 29 May 1900. Notes for Col. Benjamin Franklin Johns: Biographical and Historical Memoirs of Mississippi; Goodspeed Publishing,
1891 Col. B. F. Johns, a well-known resident of Gloster, was born in the county in
which he is now residing March 9, 1830, being a son of William L. Johns, a
native of Georgia, who was born in 1802. The father of the latter was a
Virginian, and was one of the pioneers of Georgia, in which state he died when
his son, William L., was a child. When a child of seven years the latter came
with some of his relatives to Amite county, and here he was reared to manhood
and married Miss Rachel Courtney, a native of Amite county, born in 1807. Her
father, John Courtney, was one of the early residents here. Mr. Johns began
tilling the soil on a farm on Beaver creek in the south part of the county,
where he accumulated a good property. He was a leading member of the Baptist
church for forty years, was a supporter of all good works, and his death, which
occurred in 1882, was regretted by all. His widow survived him about one year.
Col. B. F. Johns is one of a family of three sons and three daughters that grow
to mature years, of which he is the oldest. One sister is now deceased. He is
the only resident of Amite county, and as he was born and grew to manhood here
he is well known by the citizens, and naught has ever been said derogatory to
his character; in fact, many words have been said to his praise. After attending
the common schools of Amite county for some time, he attended the Western
military institue of Kentucky, which he attended two years, receiving a fair
English education. He began life for himself as a school teacher, and after
devoting two years to this occupation he began reading law, and in 1855 was
licensed to practice. He opened an office at Liberty, but in 1887 located at
Gloster. In 1866 he was elected to the office of probate judge, in which
position he displayed sound judgment and much judicial fairness. In 1875 his
numerous friends elected him to the legislature of Mississippi, and during the
sitting of 1876 and 1877 he displayed legislative ability of a high order. In
1880 he was reelected to this position, and was chosen speaker of the house.
Since that time he has continued his practice of law, and has served as mayor of
Gloster and has also held other minor positions. He was married on the 16th of
December, 1852 to Miss Mildred Luckett, a native of Kentucky, where she was
reared and educated, a daughter of David Luckett, a member of an old Kentucky
family, originally from Virginia. To Colonel and Mrs. Johns four children have
been born: Etta, wife of Rev. A. P. Schofield, a minister of the Baptist church
at Canton, Miss.; William D., a merchant of Gloster; Ellen, and Mattie, wife of
B. H. Day, of Gloster. In 1861 Colonel Johns enlisted in the Confederate army as
captain of company C in the seventh Mississippi infantry, and was in time
promoted to the rank of lieutenant-colonel. He served until the close of the
hostilities, being in the army of Tennessee and taking an active part in the
battles of Shiloh, Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, Chattanooga or Missionary Ridge,
all the engagements of the Georgia campaign, Jonesboro, Franklin, Nashville and
hundreds of skirmishes. He was paroled at Liberty and returned to his home once
more to take up the practice of law, which he has followed with most
satisfactory results up to the present time. Mrs. Johns is a worthy member of
the Baptist church, and Colonel Johns has long been a member of the Masonic
fraternity, in which he has attained to the Council degree, and has served as
high priest and master of the Blue Lodge. Children of Benjamin Johns and Mildred Luckett are: 117 i. Etta11 Johns, born 17 May 1854; died 27 Jan
