Origins: The Minorcans |
This group of settlers came to America in 1768 to New Smyrna, Florida, from the island of Minorica (located off the coast of Spain). In 1777 the survivors of this colony relocated to St. Augustine, Florida. Among these colonists were Bartholomew LeMaestre, and his wife Antonia. This surname was anglized to Masters in America.
An excellent history of this group is located on the Nassau County Genealogy site, which is maintained by Lori Bragg. This site contains many informative narrations of family histories which makes for some interesting reading.
I would like to thank Jerry Braddock and Steve Rogero of St. Augustine both for informing me of this site and for the information they have provided. These two gentlemen also have family histories on this site.
