Mathew & Sarah Marriage Record

This original document is in my Dickey files. It deals with the land that Mathew [one t] Manning purchased when he moved from Lowndes County, Alabama, to Leon County, Texas, in about 1854.

Mathew was born in 1808 in Pitt County, North Carolina, the son of Richard Manning. Mathew moved with his family to Lowndes County, Alabama, prior to 1830.

He was married in Lowndes County to Sarah Ernest on March 29, 1832. Sarah was the daughter of George Ernest and Sarah Dennis and was probably born in Jones County, Georgia.

Mathew purchased the Texas land in November, 1855. But within a year he had died, leaving a family of eight children, including a one-year-old son. A Manning descendant in Lowndes County has a record showing that Mathew died September 19, 1856.

There are two parts to the document, and they are glued together, probably with sealing wax. One part, back and front, relates to the sale of the headright certificate during the estate sale of Robert Butts, dec'd, by his administrator, Clay Cobb. The certificate was purchased by David Cobb on 25 February 1847.

We know that one of Mathew's sisters was married to a Butts, but we do not know if they were related to this Butts family at this time.

The second part of the document relates to the sale of the headright certificate by David Cobb to Albert G. Rogers, and it is dated 26 June, 1848. This is the bottom document, front and back.

I am including an image of the documents, back and front, along with the transcriptions. Note that the top document is continued on the back; the bottom document is continued on the back. The documents are glued together.

The transcriptions are below the images.

Following that is a history of the Manning deeds of Leon County, researched by Shirley Pylant in April, 1998.
