My thanks to Mr. Joe Keane for sharing with me the
Limerick Jesuit Centenary Record
1859 - 1959
Sacred Heart College, Limerick
by
Francis Finegan, S.J.
from which I have extracted the following data.
The Jesuits first arrived in Limerick on 16th February, 1859 and The Limerick Reporter and Tipperary Vindicator said: "Four of the Jesuit Fathers have arrived in this city where a branch of the order is to be established." Three days later the Limerick Chronicle announced: "The Jesuits will take charge of the St. Munchin's Seminary in this city on the 10th of March. The Reverend Mr. Haly will be principal." The Limerick Leader published the following week end gave its readers with more accurate information: "The Very Reverend Father Lentaigne, Provincial of the Jesuit Order in Ireland and the Reverend. Father Kelly, S.J. have arrived in this city in order to make arrangements for the permanent establishment of a seminary for the education of Catholic youth. We understand that the business of St. Munchin's Seminary is to be suspended from Saturday 26th to Thursday, the 10th of March, when it will be resumed under the auspices of the distinguished Jesuit Fathers. A nephew of the learned and gifted President of Maynooth College, the Reverend Father Russell, S.J., is , we understand, one of the four to be located in Limerick."
The St. Munchin's Seminary had existed in Limerick for a few years. The staff consisted of some priests from the Diocese of Limerick. It was under the patronage of Bishop Ryan but in Dec 1858, the Bishop decided to close down the school. Local historian "Archdeacon Begley, said "that the bishop arrived at his decision because the professors of St. Munchin's paid too much attention to a local election." Thus it was on 7th January 1859 that Father Lentaign, Vice-Provincial, wrote to to Rome advising of the Bishop's request that the Jesuits should take over the running of the St. Munchin Seminary. Bishop Ryan wanted the Jesuits to run a boarding school, in addition to the day school, and also to "maintain a public oratory for the convenience of the faithful." However, Fr. Lentaign didn't think this would be feasible.
So on Saturday, 26th February, 1859 the old St. Munchin's seminary closed formally. The Limerick Reporter reported: "The pupils of St. Munchin's Seminary presented their late, much to be respected masters, the Reverend Michael Malone, and the Reverend Thomas Fitzgerald with a handsome testimonial, and an Address, expressive of their deep love and regard for their many rare qualities, as priests, and sorrowing regret at their removal from them, to whom they were friends, priests and guides."
Fr. Malone was then appointed as curate to St. John's Parish, Limerick City.
The Limerick Reporter of the 4th March, 1859 said: "Four of the Jesuit Fathers, namely the Rev. Fr. Kelly (Principal), the Reverend Fr. Russell, the Rev. Fr. Hogan and the Rev. Fr. Foley have arrived in Limerick and taken up their permanent residence here with a view to the resumption of St. Munchin's Seminary, which is to open on the 10th inst., for the reception of pupils under the distinguished auspices of this truly illustrious order. We need not add what immense educational advantages are thus afforded to the Catholic youth of our ancient and time-honoured city, by the induction by his Lordship, the venerable bishop, the Right Rev. Dr. Ryan, of an order whose attainments are world-widely appreciated."
The community was made up of six - five priests and one scholastic for the new St. Munchin's seminary. They were Fr. Peter Foley, Fr. Matthew Saurin, Mr. Matthew Russell, (all three Maynooth Alumni) Fr. Edward Kelly (rector) and Fr. Thomas Kelly (brother) and Fr. Edmund Hogan. Fr. Hogan and Fr. Foley were the Irish speaking priests of the community. It was housed at No. 1 Hartstonge Street in a large city residence at the northern corner of Hartstonge Street and the Crescent. The property consisted of ample accommodation for a small day school and a residence but only had a tiny garden - not enough ground on which to build a Church and so meet the Bishop's request to "maintain a public oratory for the convenience of the faithful." It was surrounded by houses. No. 1 Hartstonge Street had formerly being the residence of the Faithful Companions of Jesus until they moved to Laurel Hill.
The school opened on March 10th with little ceremony. The Limerick Reporter and Munster News didn't even mark the event.
Pupils 1859
Paul Connolly, the son of an old and much respected Limerick City family, was the first pupil. He went on to attain eminence in his profession and devoted himself to public service.
Edward Thomas O'Dwyer was also there on the first day. He later went on to become a future Bishop of Limerick.
The Curriculum included Ancient Classics, Mathematics, modern languages - English and French. German was added later. At this time there was no system of State examinations but a Distinctions List was compiled each year in late June. Edward Thomas O'Dwyer was awarded first place in Humanities in June 1959.
Sodalities
There is no evidence of the existence of Sodalities at No. 1 Hartstonge Street, which was the home of the school for the first three (30 years. However, by the end of a decade school sodalities were complete.
In the school year 1860-1861 a boy's choir was formed and the choir-master was Fr. Edmond Hogan. This school year also saw the introduction of Italian and physics. These subjects had been taught for many years in schools like Clongowes College and St. Patrick's College, Carlow. The Rector, Fr. Edward Kelly and his brother, Fr. Thomas.
New Premises
In 1861 Richard Russell, J.P. lived in a splendid residence at the Crescent, - Crescent House - not far from No. 1 Hartstonge Street. It was rumoured in late Autumn that his residence might be coming on the market and it duly did in December of that year.
Richard Russell was a Protestant of Liberal principles. He was a brother of William Francis Russell, M.P. for the city. He and his brother, William, owned the properties of Millford and Plassy (adjoining) near Castletroy . (Plassy is now the home of the University of Limerick while Millford houses the Limerick Hospice and a Nursing Home).
In January 1862 the property was purchased in trust for the Jesuits but it wasn't until summertime that the Jesuits came into possession of Crescent House. Readers of the Limerick Reporter of 8th August, 1862 were told: "The magnificent College of the Jesuit Fathers of the Crescent, the late residence of Richard Russell, Esq., is being prepared for opening immediately after the summer vacation which end on 1st of September. The Rector, the Very Reverend Father Kelly, S.J. is busily engaged superintending the preparations for the opening of the new college."
A week after the boys returned to school, 9th September, the school was inaugurated. This time there was fitting ceremonial and the Limerick Reporter said: "This morning, the Right Reverend Dr. Butler (Coadjutor Bishop, 1861-64 and Bishop of Limerick, 1864-86) celebrated Mass and blessed the house of the Jesuit Fathers and the new College of St. Munchin. The ceremony was most impressive and beautiful. His Lordship was accompanied by the Very Reverend Monsignor Woodlock, Rector of the Catholic University of Ireland. The Very Reverend Father Kelly, S.J. and a very large number of the city clergy were present, including the professors of the College. The pupils of the College were in attendance and several visitors."
Details of the public oratory in Crescent House are not known but it be safely said that it provided more accommodation than No. 1 Hartstonge Street. From 1863 onwards the title "Prefect of the Church" was held by Fr. Christopher Bellew.
The Prospectus of the College for the 1863-63 reads:
"In this College, which is conducted by the Fathers of the Society of Jesus, young gentlemen receive a sound, refined and Catholic Education. They are prepared for the University and the Ecclesiastical Colleges; for the Learned Professions; for the Public Service - Civil and Military; and for the department of Mercantile and Commercial Life.
The Programme of Studies embraces the Greek and Latin languages; Mathematics and Natural Philosophy; French, German and Italian; with all the branches of a complete education' History, Geography, Elocution, English Composition, Reading, Writing, Arithmetic, etc.
In the Mercantile Department, which being of great importance in a commercial community, is conducted with especial care, an extensive and accurate knowledge is imparted of Arithmetic, Book-keeping, Abstracts, and the other requirements of the Actuary's office."
The New Church
1864 finally saw the execution of plans for the new Church. The Society had paid a large sum for Crescent House so it is said that they postponed their plans for the Church until this debt was lessened. Also, although the garden of Crescent House was large, it wasn't sufficient to house the new Church so the additional properties had to be purchased from their tenants. It is thought that Charles Geoghegan, a well known architect in his day, drew the plans for the new Church but William Corbett, a Limerickman, had responsibility for the building of the Church. William Corbett died in 1903 and was Engineer to Limerick Corporation.
The Church was not occupied until 1868 owing to a faulty roof structure. The Jesuits took the case to arbitration and the decision was in favour of the Jesuits. No ill will existed between the Architect and the Jesuits though and his services were retained. The Church was named Church of St. Aloysius and the Limerick Reporter said:
"Church of St. Aloysius, Crescent, Limerick: Grand Fancy Fair and Drawing of Prizes.
The opening of the bazaar in aid of the funds for the completion of the new church belonging to the Jesuit Fathers took place at one o'clock on Wednesday (27 May, 1868), on which day as well as yesterday, the attendance both in the afternoon and evening was large and fashionable. (A nineteenth century journalistic cliche for decent people in the state of grace---Editor.) The church itself, which is very lofty and of spacious dimensions, is expected to be finished about the end of August and was gracefully decorated with flowers, evergreens and banners, while the fine band of the 52nd Regiment added greatly to the attractions for the exhibition by performing a variety of beautiful airs which showed the admirable training of their accomplished and courteous trainer. The church, which is cruciform and of the Corinthian order, possesses considerable elegance interiorly and is well lighted."
Many stalls were provided and manned:
"Refreshment stall: Mrs. Fitzgerald and the Misses Fitzgerald, Mrs. Bodkin and Mrs. McCoy.
First Stall: Mrs. Blackhall and the Misses Blackhall, and Miss McDonald.
Second Stall: Mrs. Ryan, Scarteen, Mrs. J. Ryan, Woodville, the Misses Howley, Rich Hill.
Third Stall: Mrs. and the Misses Shannon, Corbally, the Misses Ryan, Templemungret, the Misses McNamara, Miss Dillon and Miss McCarthy.
Fourth Stall: Mrs. John Quin, wife of the High Sheriff, Miss Dawson, the Misses McMahon, the Misses Carroll, the Misses Nugent.
Fifth Stall: Mrs. James Barry, Mrs. and the Misses O'Farrell.
Sixth Stall: Mrs. W. Spillane and the Misses Mulqueen.
The name of the Church, however, was changed to that of Sacred Heart Church sometime before the dedication ceremony on 27th January, 1869 - the feast of the Holy Name.
The Limerick Reporter gave this account:
"A most numerous and highly respectable congregation, in which were many of the leading citizens of Limerick, assembled on Wednesday in the handsome church which has recently been erected in the Crescent by the Jesuit Fathers, to witness its opening, and its solemn dedication, by the Lord Bishop of Limerick, the Most Reverend Dr. Butler.
The occasion was one of very deep interest from a religious point of view, and though the day was unpropitious, the congregation was in all respects such as we have just described, most numerous and highly respectable.
The Church in length is 125', in breadth 38', transept 80', in height 40', in the light and graceful style of Grecian architecture, furnished not only comfortably but elegantly. It has three entrances, one by the porch of Crescent House, through an admirably lighted covered way to the sanctuary and transept, the other through a second porch some fifteen or twenty feet distant from the first mentioned, and on a line with it to the nave; the third to the rere, communicating with the vestry. The tall Corinthian pillars, six of which support the apse, and others which are ranged at equal distances in the edifice, are extremely beautiful. The roof is broad and lofty, is panelled with and relieved by admirably designed floriated ornaments in stucco work. the alter is plain; the tabernacle is of marble without elaborate accessories but exceedingly chaste; it is white and as translucent as alabaster. There is a singularly characteristic full-length image of St. Aloysius in a niche. The rows of seats, of which there are very many are made of highly polished mahogany. Bronze-gilt brackets at proper distances are utilised to hold gas lustres. And though it is but very recently that the Jesuit Fathers have undertaken the labour of supplying another church to Catholic Limerick, it must be admitted they have executed with success a design of which they may well be proud. Indeed, those who, on this occasion, for the first time, laid eyes on the edifice, expressed an agreeable surprise. We should state that in the transept there is an altar to the Blessed Virgin, and on the extension of the apse westwards there will be another to St. Joseph. The passages are laid with handsome encaustic tiles; the rest of the flooring is of wood."
Local clergy present at the ceremony were:
"Most Reverend Dr. Butler, Lord Bishop of Limerick attended by
Very Rev. Dean O' Brien, P.P. V.G., Newcastle West; as assistant priest at the throne and by the following clergymen:
Rev. J.A. Sheedy, C.C., St. John's Deacon;
Rev. Cornelius Conway, C.C., St. John's, Subdeacon;
Rev. J.McCoy, C.C., St. John's and
Rev. C. McNamara, C.C., St. John's Deacons; and
Rev John Condon, C.C., St. John's.
Rev. T.R. Shanahan, C.C. led the choir."
Travelling from a distance were:
"Most Rev. Dr. J.P. Leahy, Lord Bishop of Dromore attended by the
Rev. Dr. Carberry, O.P., as his chaplian;
The Most Rev. Dr. Connaty, Lord Bishop of Kilmore attended by
Rev. Fr. O'Connell, S.J. as chaplain;
Very Rev. James O'Shea, D.D., P.P., V.G., Rathkeale;
Very Rev. Edmund O' Reilly, S.J., Irish Provincial;
Very Rev. Alfred Murphy, S.J., Rector of Tullabed;
Very Rev. Edward Kelly, S.J., Rector of Belvedere College, Dublin;
Very Rev. Thomas Kelly, S.J., Rector of St. Munchin's College, Limerick;
Very Rev. Robert Dore, O.S.A.;
Very Rev. Father Bridgett, C.SS.R.;
Very Rev. Luke Conway, O.P.;
Very Rev. Father Jackman, O.S.F.;
Very Rev. Richard Scott, P.P., St. Mary's;
Very Rev. William Moloney, P.P., Donoughmore;
Rev. J. Mulqueen, C.C., St. Michael's;
Rev. Father Bradshaw, C.SS.R.;
Very Rev. R.T. O'Flanagan, P.P., Adare;
Rev. Father Williams, O.S.A.;
Rev. Father Hedderman, O.S.A.;
Rev. Martin Slattery, C.C., St. Munchin's;
Rev. Father Burke, O.S.F.;
and the following Jesuit Fathers:
Rev. Peter Foley,
Rev. Matthew Russell,
Rev. James McKenna,
Rev. Aloysius Sturzo,
Rev. Stephen Farrell, etc.
The Mayor for whom a state chair and priedieu had been provided fronting the altar, was early in attendance, waited on by the Sergeants-at-Mace and Constables, with their maces and staves, and dressed in their gold lace hats and livery. His Worship, who wore the Chain, was accompanied by Mrs. Boyse.
The High Sheriff, Mr. John Quin, was also present with Mrs. Quin;
Major Gavin, M.P.,
Mr. E.J. Synan, M.P.;
Captain Gavin, J.P.;
John White, J.P., Nantenan;
and several Magistrates, Aldermen and members of the Corporation, and other principal citizens were present accompanied by their wives and families. Indeed an effort had been made by the Catholic public to honour the occasion with their countenance and support as much as possible."
Also present were:
"Mr. Walsh, Superior of the Christian Brothers, and some of the Brothers."
"Soon after eleven o'clock, the procession, consisting of the clergy, dignitaries and the Lord Bishops, issued from the vestry, and headed by the Rev. C. Conway, as cross-bearer, on either side of whom were acolytes and thurifers, went through the sanctuary, passed down through the middle of the church and went outside it, the Lord Bishop of Limerick officiating and reciting the form of prayers, the psalms etc. prescribed by the Ritual, which were joined in by the processionists. The procession then re-entered the church; and having gone round it, his Lordship, with the Asperges, blessing the walls, the usual prayers, psalms and Litany of the Saints were chanted on the return of the procession to the sanctuary, where, before the altar, the chanting was continued. At this period, the Church, which was crowded, appeared to perfection.
After the first Gospel, the sermon, which so many were anxious to feast their ears on, was preached from the pulpit in his most captivating style by the Lord Bishop of Dromore, who though many years before the Catholics of Ireland as a preacher, proved that he had lost nothing of that radiant fancy, that exquisite sensibility, that deep impressiveness, ability and eloquence, as a pulpit orator, which enables him to convey, in the purest and best language, the sentiments with which his soul is filled and for which we knew him to be famous when he resided in the city of Cork a quarter of a century ago. He took for his text the verse from the fourth chapter of the Gospel of St. Matthew: 'It is written, the Lord thy God thou shalt adore; and him only shalt thou serve'."
