The Methodist Episcopal Cemetery

At

Laurytown, Pa.

Located a few miles outside of Weatherly near the road to White Haven, the Laurytown M.E. Cemetery is a truly forgotten cemetery. Unlike some of the other old abandoned cemeteries in the area that were old family owned cemeteries, this cemetery was once attached to a Methodist Episcopal Church and is still owned by the society. It was always a small congregation, and in the 1920s the church closed its doors for the last time. In October of 1926 H. H. Sloat tore down the old building and the grounds were abandoned. Today it is so overgrown that if you walk by the site you could easily miss the large stones close along the roadside. It is so filled with sticker bushes, brambles, sinkholes and deadfalls, trying to explore the site can be dangerous. Every so often, local people get together and clean up the site. However, it is not long before the undergrowth again takes over.

We are fortunate that there are people dedicated to preserving local history, and Jack Koehler of Weatherly is one of those people. Known as the Weatherly historian and rail buff, in 1985, after one of the clean-ups at the site, Jack recorded and photographed the stones, made a plot map of the site, and has now kindly contributed his record of the cemetery for this web site.  Many thanks, Jack!

There are sixty-nine recorded burials shown here. They are not in alphabetical order, but are in the order in which they were recorded. Using that number, you can find individual burial sites on the

PLOT MAP.

This will show who is buried with whom, identifying family groups. The Plot Map also shows the location of a few stones that were too worn or broken to record.

What I found most striking about this cemetery has to do with the Sourwine/Cole plot near the southeast corner of the cemetery. Although the cemetery is terribly overgrown, this one plot is well tended, with heavy layers of mulch put down to keep the weeds at bay. The plot is well cared for, despite the fact that the most recent burial in the plot took place in 1912.
