Truman HATHORNE (Dec. 18, 1907 in Taylorville, Smith Co., MS – Oct. 3, 1974 in Bogalusa, Washington Parish, LA) married Sarah "Sallie or Sally" Elizabeth LOTT. They lived most of their lives in Bogalusa, LA. Both are buried in Pounds Cemetery, Washington Parish, LA. “Sally” was the daughter of Robert Lamar LOTT, Sr. (Jul. 1889 – Abt. Jan. 07, 1929) and Lucy Olive “Ollie” KNIGHT (Apr. 05, 1896 – ?), who married on June 1, 1930.

Truman HATHORNE worked for the Crown Zellerbach Corporation’s Gaylord Container Division (the “Box Factory”) in Bogalusa, Louisiana for 34 years. He was hired in Feb. 1936 as a Bundler; Oiler in Nov. 1942; Apprentice Helper in Apr. 1944; and, Mechanic in Aug. 1950. (“Sally” also worked at the “Box Factory” for Abt. 10 years.) He took early retirement due to health problems. Truman raised hunting dogs (Beagles) as a hobby. He was the kindest man I ever known.

His daughter, Janet Sue wrote of him:

“Papa helped animals all his life. He has raised parakeets, chickens, ducks, guineas, peacocks, all kind of birds and animals. I can remember him trying to save mules’ and horses’ lives. He would cry when he failed. In all of our lives Daddy never spanked or whipped us or ever hit mama. He just could not do that.

He was a wrestler when he was young and he only made went to about the 8th grade. They all had to help Grandma make a living. He went to church every Sunday. When I was staying with him and Mama and went out on Saturday night, they made me get up and go with him. When I would tell him I was tired and not able to go, he would say "You don't want me to have to go by myself do you?" and I would get up and go. He always did anything I ask him to do so he knew I would do what he asked. It truly makes me sad to think about him, I loved him and had more respect for him than any person I have ever known. I have to close and cry.”
