This message is intended both for those who have found family connections within these pages, and for those who have not...
From its inception, this McKemie One Name Study has been intended as a resource for those of us researching this remarkable, diverse surname. Since I launched the Study, this is even more true. This site is a "Central Repository" for all things MCKEMIE.
If you have found a connection here, show your appreciation by contributing to the growth of the site. Do this by sharing documents, photographs, family legends, or by simply sharing what you know about your branch of the family tree.
If you have not yet found something within these pages, we need to correct that oversight! And this can be done by you sharing documents, photographs, family legends, or by sharing your branch of the family tree. Or emailing me and we can work together to see what can be found.
Do you see a theme here? I intend this site to be one of community, network and connection. To make the most of the information we all have, we need to share it. The rewards are infinite, the challenges insignificant. Working together, we can uncover information and details heretofore unknown. Working together, we can topple brick walls previously insurmountable. Working together, we can "fill in the blanks". But most importantly, working together we can meet and learn about our extended family.
Take a look at the list of items on the One Name Study main page--there are two columns of "examples" of documents/information that would be of benefit to this site. If you explore this site, you will find that there are many tables with basic information--births, marriages, burials. So, even if you don't have a so-called "document" to share, you more than likely DO have information to share. Please, please feel free to email me with any questions.
If you are able, please consider sending a GEDCOM file of your family tree to the One Name Study. This information will stay within the Study and will NOT be shared with programs such as RootsWeb's World Connect or Ancestry.com's database of family trees, or similar databases. But this information WILL be shared with other INDIVIDUALS researching MCKEMIE/MCKAMEY/MAKEMIE/MCKEMY/etc. lines with the hope of helping them find their branch within our family tree. The reason for this central database is to have a way of responding to inquiries via the web site and to continue the goals of the One Name Study and discover how all the MCKs fit together. While I serve as the "Mother Hen" of the database, I enthusiastically welcome inquiries, additions, and corrections. The best feeling in the world is putting one researcher in touch with another, knowing they are about to discover a whole new branch of their family.
If you have one of the more obscure branches on the tree, please let me know. We can design pages within the MCK site to highlight your branch of the family and hopefully shed some light on your mystery.
Once I discovered the fun of having a website for the McKemie part of my tree, I decided to expand to the other branches. I haven't put as much online (at least not yet!) but it is coming along. If you think we have a connection, I hope you'll message me, too.
While I have made every effort to present the material within this site as accurately as I know it, there are bound to be mistakes. These might be erroneous records, mistakes in transcription, or more commonly, simple typos. I also am often tinkering with the organization or design of the site and this can lead to dead links. If you find any of these sorts of things, please do drop me a quick message to let me know. If its something I can correct, I would like to do so.
You are free to share this site and the information within with your friends and family. However, you may NOT sell, redistribute, or upload this information in any for-profit form without the express permission of the contributor. Please keep in mind everything that Ancestry.com locks behind a paywall If you add things there, consider adding a link to where you found it on this site so that people who do not have memberships can still benefit from the data. Naturally, basic facts cannot be copyrighted, but respect the contributors mentioned within these pages. Their hard work deserves to be recognized and acknowledged.
Items without specific contributor names are likely to be mine (unless I made an error) and so, please respect my copyright.
Specifically, be respectful of images and photographs. While copyright might not be an issue, it is only right and fair to make note of where you found the image, and even who owns the original, when uploading these images to other sites. I'm thinking of FamilySearch and Ancestry as I write this. I've never added an image to either of those sites, but images from my website turn up frequently. Its frustrating to see an image of a baseball team with one man identified as a specific person when the reality is that it could be one of three men in the photograph. I know this because I have the photograph with the barely discernible x-marks over three men and I have that information written with it, but that information doesn't get passed along when its reproduced outside of this site. Share, please, but share in such a way that the information passed is as accurate as it can be. Credit for where you found it would be a nice consideration, too, but less important than simply striving for the correct perpetuation of our family information.
This site's design draws heavily from Pat Geary and her site, Genealogy Web Creations, and from Matthew James Taylor's site about css column design. There is also a wonderful email list for Freepages accounts hosted by Rootsweb that has been invaluable in helping me make what I see in my imagination take shape on the screen.
Thanks for taking the time to wander this site and I hope you find something that enriches your branch of the family tree. And remember, my email is at the bottom of every page!
Warmly,
Created 10 October 2016
