Educated at Old Field School, Emory & Henry, Hiawassee College. Practiced law at Spring Place, later at Dalton. In 1888, the First National Bank was organized, and he was Director and President of the Bank. At the time of his death, was the oldest member of the Dalton Bar, praised by fellow Lawyers at memorial services as a prominent lawyer, honored citizen and Christian gentleman.

Served in military during the Civil War-Confederacy. 1st Liet-Sept 19, 1861. Wounded leg, disabled at Malvern Hill, VA on July 1, 1862. Resigned disability March 22, 1863. Died in Dalton, GA August 28, 1908 Served in 60th Infantry, Co E, 1st Lt. Member of the Joseph E Johnston Camp-No 34-4th Ga Bat., 60th.

His grandson was Carlton Candler McCamy Jr., (Aug 22, 1910-October 1993) a prominent attorney and Mayor of Dalton; A grandaughter, Marion McCamy, was a published author.
