Sam was married to Cate L. Carter at the age of 26 after serving in the Civil War. He enlisted in the Confederate Army during the War between the States at the age of 18, Company E, 4th Ga Battalion, 60th Ga Regt. under Capt. J.W. Beck and General Robert E. Lee. At the close of the War, he waspromoted to Captain. On September 1, 1861- Served as 2nd Sergeant on September 19, 1861. Muster Roll Company E, Sixtieth Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, Army of the Northern Virginia, Evans Brigade, Gorden's Division, C.S.A. , Capt. W.P. Jarrell -page 215 of the State Capitol Records of the Confederate Soldiers in the Official History of Whitfield County Georgia. Appointed 1st Sergeant in 1862. Wounded at 2d Manassas, Va. on August 28, 1862. Elected 2d Liet. of Co. F. on October 4, 1863. Wounded in the knee at Hatchers Run, VA on February 5, 1865. In Petersburg, VA Hospital on April 1865. Served as a 2nd Lieutenant in Muster Roll, Company F, Sixtieth Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, Army of Northern Virginia, Evans Brigade, Gorden's Division, CSA, Capt. W.P. Jarrell, page 216 of the State Capitol Records of Confederate Soldiers 12 Paroled at Richmond, VA on April 23, 1865. This list was compiled from the Minutes of the Joseph E Johnston Camp for 1900 -Page 222 of the Official History of Whitfield County, Ga-SB McCamy-Co. F., 60th. Appears on a Confederate List of Casualities in the 60th Ga Regt at the Battles of Bristoe Station, Manassas and Chantilly Va-Aug 27-Sept 1, 1862 His name also appears on a Register at Stuart Hospital in Virginia on Feb 8, 1865 and was paroled on April 22, 1865 for a wound to the left thigh. His name appears on a Parole of Prisoners of War list of the Potomac Camp near Falmoth VA-Dec 14, 1862-age 20 yr old-He was finally paroled in April 1865 and signed a Parole of Honor, giving solemn promise not to take part in hostile fire while the prisoner exchange was going on.

He was a charter member of the Hamilton Street Methodist Church (founded in 1888) in Dalton, Georgia and was a Member of the Joseph E. Johnston Camp, No 34, United Confederate Veterans in Dalton Georgia-Co. F, 60th Ga-Captain.

He served as a Clerk of the Superior Court in Murray Cty, Ga from 1868-1871.

Sam McCamy is listed in the Registration List of 129 1st Dist. G.M. Murray Cty. Ga as a 22 yr old living in Spring Place , Ga as a Farmer and listed as a Soldier descendant. Is listed in the Registration List of 824th Dist G.M. Murray Cty Ga as a white male, 53 yr old, living in Spring Place, GA as a Merchant. Listed in Registration List of 1013th Dist. G.M. Murray Cty Ga as a 38 yr old man living as a Merchant in Crandall Ga

He was stricken with paralysis on April 6, 1901 and no longer able to work. He wasn't strong for many years and after the stroke was utterly helpless on the right side-was unable to move or talk.

Sam is buried at West Hill Cemetery in Dalton, Georgia, alongside his wife Cate and three young children, John, Cate and one unidentified infant and one grandson Edwin Russell, son of Mary McCamy and Charles Russell.
