The John Calvin McCamey Family - [BOK 156]

John Calvin McCamey came with his family to Murray County, Ga., about 1844. His parents were Alexander and Malinda (Borden) McCamey. Alexander McCamey was born in Virginia, reared in Tennessee and was the son of Samuel McCamey who came from Ireland. John Calvin was one of 16 children, 15 lived to maturity: Sarah, Mary, William, James, David, Meryman, John C., Jane, Eliza, Elizabeth, Alpha, Martha, David, Samuel and Malinda.

In 1853, John Calvin left Murray Co., Ga., to make his home in Texas. March 1856 he came to Comanche Co., made a squatter's claim of 160 acres and was made a grant of that property Feb. 24, 1874 by Edmund J. Davis, Governor of Texas. John Calvin was among the early settlers and prominent farmers of the county. He was married three times. He first married Sarah L. Martin, 7 March 1858 in Comanche Co. Sarah was a native of Murray Co., Ga. She had come to Texas with her father Henry R. Martin, Sr. Sarah's mother Ellender (Dooly) Martin did in Arkansas in 1853. John Calvin and Sarah had five children: (1) Pulaski, (2) Calvin Lafayette, (3) Caldonia, (4) Mary Ellen and (5) Josephine Ann. All reached maturity and were married. Sarah L. (Martin) McCamey died in 1873. Sarah's father, Henry R. Martin, Sr. was born in Edgefield district, South Carolina, in 1800, He was prominent in the development of Comanche Co., He married a second time to Stacy McKinzie, 16 March 1865. He died 10 September 1882.

Sarah and John Calvin's daughter Caldonia married Robert Franklin Thomas of Comanche Co., Texas, October 18, 1888. His parents were William and Martha Jane (Sisson) Thomas, both born in Alabama, reared in Arkansas. Robert and Caldonia had three children: Meddie D., Emma Gertrude, and Freddie Morris.

John Calvin's second marriage was to Lucinda C. Howry, 29 July 1875. They had five children: (1) Edward, (2) Julia, (3) Alpha, (4) John and (5) Emma. His third marriage was to Mrs. Josephine Lincoln, 10 April 1895. The date of John Calvn McCamey's death is uncertain but is believed to be between 1901-1903.

I am the granddaughter of Caldonia McCamey Thomas, daughter of Emma Gertrude Hare.
