"McKAMEY

John is the first of the family in Virginia. William, his son lived in Augusta Co. Va. where he m. Isabella Cooper ? He died there in 1796. About 1807 Isabella moved to Tennessee and settled near the present site of Harriman, Roane Co. William Cooper, the son of Isabella and William was born in Augusta Co., Va. in 1784. He was a saddler by trade, was Justice of Peace from 1807 to 1824., was a member of the Kingston Literature Society and County records show that he was prominent socially and politically. He was also one of the early Trustees of the County, a Charter member and Trustee of Bethel Presbyterian Church, which was organized June 6, 1818. He m. Jan P. daughter of Capt. Samuel and Susannah (McDonald) Walker. Their children were William Cooper, Jr. b. 1823, F. Perry, b. 1819. (The "F" stood for Francis in other records.)

Elizabeth McKamey m. Samuel R. Walker, Oct 10, 1815 in Roane Co.
F. Perry McKamey m. 1846, Esther Jane, daughter of Thomas and Susannah (Peak) Hagler.
William Cooper, Jr. m. Oct 21, 1845, Rachel, daughter of William H. and Keziah (Cardwell) Wester. The two brothers moved to Dallas Co. Tex in 1857 and died there, as did their mother. I think that William Cooper MckKamey married Jane Walker as Samuel Walker mentions his daughter Jane P. McKamey in his will.

Isabella COOPER McKAMEY and her family, including eldest son, William, arrived in Knox Co., TN ca 1797, before Roane Co. was even formed from Knox. From my research, Isabella was from the COOPER family of York Co., PA, and I believe they were m. there. Info on the family can be found in Chalkey's series on Augusta Co., VA., including William's Will, etc. When the "Loose Records" were finally sorted at the old Court House in Kingston, cleaned, filed and indexed, there were several items regarding John McKAMY. One group was dated 1827, included 7 documents; Settlement with the administrator years support set apart for the widow and family. A second series is dated 1834, and consists of 5 documents: Original Will; W.C. McKAMY and John C. McKAMY were appoint executors of the last will and testament, George ARNOLD, Jas. BUCKHANNON and William M. McKAMY entered into bond with them: sale of property. The Will of John McKAMY, dated Jan 1834, appears in Will Book B, p. 230 - 233 and reads as follows:

In the name of God Amen. I John McKAMY of the of Tennessee & county of Roane, being of sound mind & memory though weak in Body do make this my last will and Testament in manner & form as flooweth viz. As to my worldly estate it has been pleased God to help me with I dispose of it in the following manner viz. my desire is that all my first depts be paid Item I lent to my loving wife Polly McKAMY During her life three negroes Bob Delia & Fanny together with all the household & Kitchen furniture and plantation utensils and to have a support in the land her life four of the best horses six milk cows with all the hogs & sheep. Item I give to my son John C. McKAMY one negro boy named Wil & one Gray colt which he has received & my said son John is to pay a debt due to John GAMMON. Item I give to my daughter Sintha Breazeale one negro Girl named Harriet one mare colt one bed & furniture which she has received, Item I give to my won Wm. Newton one sorrel horse which he claims. Item I give to my son Robert HARVEY one Brown horse colt which he claims Item I give to my daughter Isabella WHITE Twenty dollars to be paid her by my Exors. at the death of my wife Item I give to my three sons John C. William Newton & Robert H. McKAMY all my land at the death of my wife to be eaqually divided among them or their legal representatives. Item I give to my Daugher Ann Breazeale one negro Girl named Matilda one horse one bed & furniture which she has received. Item my desire is that my wife give my two oldest Daughters now at home each their bed & furniture which they claim. Item I give to my daughter Peggy one negro Girl named Eady, and one mare she claims. Item I give to my daughter Sally one negor girl named Clariss one mare the mare she has received & her bed & furniture. Item I give to my Daughter Permelia Jane and at the death of my wife whoever of my sons will keep my said Daughter shall hve the said Mary for supporting said Permelia Jane. If Mary should die before Permelia Jane then & in that case my sons must support her for life. Item I give to my daughter Malinda one negro Girl Mary Caroline and one mare which she claims. Item my desire is that the negroes lent my wife after her death be eaqually divided among my two sons. John C. McKAMY he having received Polly & Nancy two negroes Stephen & Ellick to be given up to them at the death of my wife or in ten yeaars should she live longer. Item my desire is that at the death of my wife if there should be any property remaining it should be sold & the money equally divided among all my children & lastly I appoint Wm. C. McKAMY & John C. McKAMY exors. to this my las will and testmanet in witness whereof I have herunto set my hand & seal the 21st Decr, 1833. Signed Sealed & delivered in presences of interlined John McKAMY

In the marriage records, John M. McKAMEY m. Polly CLARK, 26 May 1823 in Knox Co., TN. No proof that this is the above named John and Polly. Some families found in Blount Co. near Knox Co. line.

In 1830 Census, William C. McKAMEY is listed with 1 male 5-10, 1 10-15, 1 40-50 & 1 60-70/ 1 female 40-50. (This would place his birth between 1760 & 1870, thus he would have been 21 between 1881 & 1891, and I believe this is the eldest son of Isabella COOPER McKAMEY.)

In the 1840 Census, William C. McCAMEY is listed with 1 male 15-20, 1 20-30 ,1 50-60/1 female 50-60. He also had 4 male slaves and 1 female. (This would place his birth at ca 1870 - 1880, thus giving credence to Wells' date of 1874. Believe this is the s/o John, named for his brother.)

In the 1840 Census, we find two of the surname McKAMY listed. Mary has 1 female 15-20, 3 20-30, 1 50-60. She also has 2 male slaves and 3 female slaves. In the 1840 Tax Lists, she is listed with 752 Acres valued at $2084 & 5 slaves valued at $2500. Harvey was paying only on his own head, William N. only on his own head, John C., 1 slave valued at $500, and his own head. We find the name spelled at least 4 ways in Roane Co. records - McCAMY. McCAMEY, and McKAMEY or McKAMY.

John McKAMEY is listed with 1 male under 5, 1 30-40/1 female 15-20, 1 20-30. He also has one male slave in 1840.
