Abstracts from letter of Charles McCamy, Dalton, GA, 27 March 1986

The following abstracts from a copy of letter written by the late Charles McCamy, Dalton, GA, 27 March 1986, now deceased. Shared here by Marje Watts. [LTR 098]

"If my information is correct I would say those families migrated out of Tennessee primarily for land. The Cherokee indians were removed out of this area and part of Tennessee in 1838 and that land claimed by the Cherokee was surveyed and lots drawn in about 1839. Of course the Cherokee nation was marched west, re the "Trail of Tears."

Gold was discovered just east of here in and around Dahlonega, Georgia in the early 1800's, but was under control of various businessmen up until the Civil War at which time the Confederate's took control. Who controlled it after that I am not certain, but don't believe individuals could mine except in the creeks above and below the main mines.

According to Mr. T.F. McKAMY's notes he visited Mr. Samuel McCAY in 1914 here in Murray County and indicated his father and children as follows:

Robert A. (River Bob) McCAMY
b. 10-22-1833 (Roane Co., TN)
d. 6-12-1919, Carndall, GA
m. Louisa F. Thompson, 1-14-1855
b. 3-13- 1814, Murray County, GA
d. ?

Children: Sarah E. McCAMY m. Wm. Leach HENRY
James W. McCAMY m. Laura McINTIRE
Margaret McCAMY m. Frank SUMMERHOUR
Wm. Lon McCAMY m. ??
Jesse H. McCAMY m. Delana WHITMORE
Nola McCAMY m. ??
Samuel McCAMY m. Katherine PANGLE
Angeline McCAMY m. Jesse McNEELY
Mamie McCAMY m. B.A. Gregory

Note that Robert A. McCAMY above was born in Roane County, he removed to Blount Co. He and Louisa were married in Blount County and his surname is listed as Robert A. McKAMEY and Louisa F. THOMPSON, Jun 14 1855, So he and his family must have removed into Murray Co., GA before 1857 as their first child (Sarah E.) was born 11-26-1857, Crandall, Georgia which is due east of her about 20 miles.

There was another McCAMY family here in the 1850's. His name was:
William Campbell McCAMY
b. 1830 m. Ann RUSHTON McCAMY, 6-4-1854
b. ??

Children:
Robert Holt McCAMY m. Mary L. Appleton
Mathis J. McCAMY m. ??
Ann Ruston McCAMY m. ??
Emma W. McCAMY m. Henry GRISSINGER

What relation Robert and William was I don't know at this time. William and his family evidently removed to Philadelphia PA as all his children died and is buried there, some researchers are saying that was the home of Ann Rushton. I don't know for sure whether this is correct or not.

Both WHITFIELD and MURRAY has quite a number of "McCAMY's". My son and myself are the only "McKAMEY's". But I would bet that Robert's name was changed from McKAMEY to McKAMY to McCAMY. According to the records my GG Grandfather and his 4 brothers spelled their names as McKAMEY. It is believed that both William and/or John migrated from Anderson to Roane County, one just near the Anderson/Roane county line.
