John McCamey and Jane Rodgers McCamey
Come to America in 1835

Compiled and Contributed Here by Donna Mohney

John McCamey and Jane Rodgers McCamey came to America, landing in Philadelphia, with their family in 1835. Two brothers came to America at the time John and Jane came. One stopped at Philadelphia and was never heard from again. The other was James McCamey. Another record states that Jane came to America with her brother Samuel and sister Susannah on the same boat, arriving in Philadelphia in 1834. Samuel Rodgers did come to America. His daughter, Mary, married John and James' son, George McCamey.

The trip to America took 8 weeks. John and Jane arrived in Parker's Landing with Jane Gailey, who died the night of their arrival. Letitia, sister of Jane Rodgers McCamey died of measles in 1834 before the family reached Parker's Landing and was buried at Glade Run Cemetery, near Dayton, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania.

John settled on a grant of 500 acres of land near Eau Claire, and cleared part of it, farming until his death. They were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

The 1840 Census of Armstrong County, Pennsylvania shows Thomas McCam- 2 males under 5, 1 male 10/15; 4 males 20/30, 1 male 40/50, 1 female under 5, 1 female 15/20, 1 female 20/30, and 1 female 30/40.

Children of John and Jane Rodgers McCamey:
William; Samuel; John Bruce (b. 1821); George (b. 3 Aug. 1826), Thomas H., Robert J. (b. ca 1832); Susanna (b. ca 1833); Rebecca (b. ca 1835); Elizabeth (b. 1842)

The McCamey family is reported to have been from Buncrana Townland, County Donegal, Inishowon West Barony, Parish of Fahan Lowy, PLU Inishowon, Province of Ulster, Ireland. Jane Rodgers McCamey was born in Cashel, County Donegal, Ireland. Her parents were George Rodgers and Susannah Harward. George was the son of Oliver Rodgers (b. ca 1710) and Christina Johnson. Oliver moved to Ireland during the French War (The French and English battled on and off over colonies for a number of years starting in the 1740s. The major conflict was the Seven Year's War, 1756-1763. It is unclear which war is referred to. However, it is to be noted that George Rogers was born in Ireland around 1740.) Oliver was reputed to be the tallest man in Europe at 7 feet. His occupation was Calico Inspector. He was an Episcopalian.

George Rodgers is reported to have come to America but returned to Ireland and died there about 1797. His wife, Susannah, came to America supposedly dying on the night of her arrival at her son's home. Samuel Rodgers, was born June 05, 1788 in Linsforth, Donegal Co. Ireland, and died September 06, 1853 in Perry Twp., Clarion Co., PA. He married Margaret Cook Abt. 1808 in County Donegal, Ireland, daughter of John Cook and Betsy McCaig. She was born 1789 in Duine, Donegal Co. Ireland, and died 1860 in Clarion Co., Pennsylvania. These Cooks were reportedly neighbors of the McCameys in Ireland.

According to notes from Margaret McElhiney McElwain, "Samuel Rodgers was manager of a Lord's estate, Bishop Knox. (A son is named William Knox Rodgers) He decided to come to America from Ireland and arranged passage in 1834 for himself, his wife and children. His second daughter who had been raised by her Cook grandparents refused to go with them. She was 16 but she married her cousin George Harward (Howard or Harwood) so she could stay behind. Samuel had a farm in Clarion County about 9 miles from Parker and built a log house on it. He lived there until he died. Samuel had a large farm of 168 acres, which he left to his only son, William. William, after his mother's death sold the farm and moved to Fallowfield Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania where he bought 1000 acres and ran a farm.

Samuel Rodgers had to cancel the passage he had booked to America because of an injury to his foot. The ship he had booked passage on never reached America. Later that year he brought his family from Ireland to America, landing in Philadelphia. His sisters, Jane McCamey and Susannah Logan came on the same boat. Samuel had converted all of his possessions to gold before leaving Ireland.

Their boat took eight weeks to make the crossing. They traveled by canal to Holidaysburg and then by Conestoga wagon over the mountains to Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. The trip was very hard on them. The older children walked most of the way. Samuel's daughter, Mary Rodgers, became the wife of George McCamey.
