My Purpose
This site contains information about the McKie and Titus Families of South West Michigan & surrounding areas. Allegan, Van Buren, Berrien, Cass, St Joseph, Kalamazoo, Calhoun Counties. My purpose is to simply share the information I have found with others who might be searching for the same families, and to keep there memory alive.
Four Brothers emigrated to America from Scotland. Joseph McKie, Thomas M McKie, Alexander McKie, and James McKie, all ending up in Michigan in Three Oaks, and the surrounding Areas . I'm also researching My Titus ,Merring,& Anderson Families as well. Other Surnames include : McDowell, Hatfield, Stockwell, Adams, Willson
My McKie Ancestors came from the Galloway Dumfries area of Scotland , Namely The Stewartry of Kirkcudbrightshire, and it's parishes of Balmaclellan, Balmaghie, Crossmichael, Kelton , Kirkcudbright. and from what I have gathered are descendants from a family known as the McGhies of Balmaghie. Note that the name McKie and McGhie were used in old Galloway Documents indiscriminately. and are really one in the same. I'm still looking into Scottish history about the history of the McGhies of Balmaghie & the McKie's of Larg . I'm finding a lot of conflicting information so it's been hard to decipher the truth. so if anyone can help in that matter it would be appreciated. I have found some data that contains some information on my ancestors that goes back further than what I have recorded on the Reverend William McKie. That can be found Here, but I'm reluctant to just blindly accept it as truth without seeing the documentation myself. Note :Rev .William McKie Would be Thomas McKie's Great Grandfather .
Thomas McKie of Whom I descend from was born in Scotland in 1810, and was reared to maturity in his native land, where he followed the occupation of a farmer. Upon emigrating to America in 1833, he landed in Quebec, and then proceeded directly to New York State. There he was united in marriage with Miss Anna Lewis, the daughter of Edward Lewis, and a native of England, having emigrated to the United States about 1833. Removing to the sunny South, Mr. McKie engaged in farming near Philadelphia, Neshoba County, Miss., but after residing there for a few years, he removed to Bond County, Ill., in 1844, and ten years later came to Michigan, locating in Three Oaks. Here he continued to reside until his career was terminated by his death in 1874.
My Titus Ancestors originated from Massachusetts. Richard Rioly Titus at some time moved to Brookville, Kansas. and also lived in Missouri. From there, between the years 1920-1923 George H Titus moved to Otsego Michigan , his brothers Marvin Adams Titus & John Wade Titus moved to Michigan. Marvin Adams Titus also lived in several other states and I think ended up in California some time later. John Wade Titus Lived in Laramie, Wyoming. Moving to Kalamazoo around 1924. William Parker Titus Stayed behind and remained in Kansas.
My Merring Family Immigrated from Germany in the mid 1700's and owned land in various parts of Morris-County and Sussex County, N. J. and also lived in various parts of Pennsylvania . Sumner Merring, My Great Grandfather. Was born in New Jersey and raised in Pennsylvania. Moving to Wyoming sometime after 1912 for a short time before moving on to Longview Washington. where he spent the remainder of his life.
