John McVay was born 1778 in Rockingham Co., Virginia. His father was Christian McVay and his origins are unknown. John married Elizabeth Miller in 1804 Rockingham Co. Virginia and had two children before moving to Pickaway Co., Ohio about 1808. John and Elizabeth had Thomas, Mary, James, Elizabeth, John Jr., Henry, Martha, Hannah, Emanuel, Minerva, Jason, Aaron, and Miller McVay. Of these, Thomas and James married sisters Jane and Hannah LeMasters.
