Notes for JOHANNES
MICHAEL WAGGONER:
It appears from the
papers in the Revolutionary War Pension Claim S File No. 7824.
That while residing
near Moorefield, Hardy County, Virginia, John
Michael Wagoner, was
drafted (about the middle of the Revolutionary War). He served as a Ranger under Captain Owen Davy and Cololen Charles
Martrin. He served for three months. He was in the battle at Yorktown with George
Washington. Also present at the
surrender of Cornwallis.
Drafted in 1778, and
served under Captain John Harness and Colonel Riddel in General McIntosh's
campaign. (Three and a half months.)
Soon after, he served under Captain Parsons in pursuit of Tories. (seven
or eight days) In 1781, he was drafted
under Captain Thomas Neel and Colonel Lewis.
In the fall of 1782,
he enlisted as an Indian Spy under Edward Freeman (three months). Ordered out by Colonel William Lowther and
stationed at West's Fort to guard the frontiers. Went out as a spy until the middle of 1792.
In 1792, Tecmeseh,
with a party of Indians, went to his house on a branch of Hacker's Creek, Lewis
County, Virginia. They raided his house
killing his one son in the yard. They
took his wife and six other children prisoner.
About a mile from the house, one son found dead and scalped. A short distance further, his wife and two
other children were found mangled scalped and dead. His captive son, Peter, in 1812, was recognized among the savages
by acquaintance and brought home. Peter
married, however, he did have a wife and children among the Indians. One daughter escaped the Indians by way of
Detroit. The other daughter remained in
captivity until the treaty with the Indians.
At that time she was given up by them.
He married Hannah
Kyles, his second wife. His first wife
was killed by Indians. He settled on a
large area of land two miles east of what is now Fort Ashby, WV. He lived there until his death and is buried
a short distance from the house in which he lived. The flat slabs have either been flattened or removed as there is
no visible sign of them today.

by Henry Haymond/Research of Chris Waggoner:
In Virginia, while
living on the South Branch, about 1763, Wilheim Waggoner born about 1706
Germany, built a fort-like home for his family. One day Wilheim and daughter Mary and son Peter were working in
the fields some distance from the fort when Indians came upon them and killed,
scalped the old man then taking Mary and Peter captive. The rescue party found two Indians and Mary
setting about a fire. They killed on
Indian and wounded the other. One of
the balls unluckily hit Mary and she died the next day. Peter was carried to their towns and
remained with the Indians for some time; he later found his way to Philadelphia
with some Frenchmen.
Wilheim's son John
Waggoner married Margaret Bonnet. An
Indian massacre at their home on Jesse's Run at Hacker's Creek: First Tecumseh shot at John Waggoner. John escaped to a neighbor, the Hardman
home. One small boy was found killed
and scalped in the front yard and the Indians took Mrs. Waggoner prisoner and
six of their children. A mile from the
house they found another small boy killed and still further on they found Mrs.
Waggoner and two more small boys brutally murdered. Two girls and Peter were taken to the Indians town in Ohio. The eldest girl Elizabeth, age 12, was sold
into slavery to an Indian squaw and treated cruelly. In 1795, Elizabeth was returned to her father. Mary was returned with the singing of
the Treaty at Greenville. Peter
Waggoner lived with the Indians for 20 years marrying an Indian woman and had
two daughters before his father convinced him to return home.

John Waggoner, born
November 21, 1752 in Whitemarsh, Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania, died September
1842 in Jesse Run, Lewis Co., West Virginia.
He was the son of Wilhelm Waggoner and Agnes Fleischer. He married Margaret Bonnett about 1776 in
Monongalia Co., West Virginia.
Margaret Bonnett,
born about 1756 in Paoli, Chester Co., Pennsylvania; died May 7, 1792 in Jesse
Run, Lewis Co., West Virginia. She was
the daughter of Samuel Bonnett and Mary Elizabeth Marchan Lorentz.
Additional
information obtained from "Ancestors of Author James Rinehart:
On May 7, 1792, John
and his family were attacked by a Shawnee raiding party. John, having been shot in the arm or
shoulder, fled for help to his neighbor, Peter Hardman. The raiders took the family, but killed 4 of
the little boys and Margaret, who was pregnant with her eighth child. They killed them because they were in danger
of being caught and needed to lighten the load. Kidnapped were the two eldest daughters, Elizabeth and Mary, and
6 year old Peter. Many local and national
historians and researchers of the past have claimed this raiding party was led
by Tecumseh. Some even claim that
Tecumseh returned years later and talked to Lewis Co. residents about the
raid. Special Note: Research by owner of "Ancestors of
Author James Rinehart," states he has read and researched Tecumseh's life
to some degree, and he was clearly in Kentucky or southwestern Ohio in the
spring of 1792. Tecumseh had also, by
this time, preached extensively, and to much ridicule and controversy, to
tribes all over eastern America about not killing women and children in these
raids. He believed war should be fought
by warriors and for military purposes.
He was laughed at and scorned by other tribes of the time for this
ridiculous notion. The dismembering of
the human body was repugnant to Tecumseh at an early age (12-13). He found it inhumane and dishonorable. In the opinion of the author, it is highly
unlikely Tecumseh and anything to do with the Waggoner Massacre. The Waggoner Massacre was a stealing raid
for children. This was a common
practice for replacing Shawnee children that had died or been killed by
frontiersmen. The massacre took place
on the wedding day of Peter Hardman's daughter, Elizabeth to Caleb Smith.
Mary and Elizabeth
were eventually returned to their father, and Peter was also found years later
with the Shawnees on the Scioto River in south-central Ohio. He was convinced by his father to return for
a brief time, but was never allowed to leave and eventually married Catherine
Hardman and raised a family in Lewis Co., WV.
These stories are well researched and presented by Chris Wagoner in
"The Hackers Creek Pioneer Descendants Journals."
John Waggoner led an
adventurous life. He was about 10 years
old when his family was attached and his father and sister killed in Hampshire
County. He then became an industrious
"Indian Spy" on the backside of the mountains during the
Revolutionary War and the Indian Wars.
He built forts in Ohio and West Virginia. He married for a second time, to an orphan girl, 20 years his
junior, and had another large family.

Elizabeth was kidnapped
in May of 1792 during the Waggoner Massacre.
Elizabeth, age twelve, was sold into slavery to a Shawnee wife, at the
Shawnee town of Maumee, on the Miami River in Ohio. She was reportedly treated harshly by the Shawnees. Elizabeth and Sally Johnson, another
captive, escaped to Detroit where they were taken in by a Mr. Sisney. Sisney returned Elizabeth to her uncle,
Lewis Bonnet, in Wheeling sometime in 1795.
Lewis Bonnet then took her to her father in Lewis Co. (WV).

Notes on Peter
Waggoner: from User Home Page of Arthur

Peter Waggoner was
kidnapped at the age of 6, in the Waggoner Massacre. He lived with the Shawnees in south-central Ohio on the Scioto
River for twenty years. He was noticed
by a former neighbor of John Waggoner, Mr. Booher, who was moving to Ohio. He was recognized because of his striking
resemblance to his father. John
Waggoner, accompanied by Lewis Bonnet, went to Ohio to retrieve his son. His son was now Shawnee, a hunter for the
small band he lived with. He had a
Shawnee wife and two daughters. He was
then 27 years old. After much debate,
Peter agreed to return to Lewis County for a couple of months to meet his
"white relatives." Once back
in Lewis Co., John and his friends locked Peter in a shed or barn and refused
to let him leave. Peter even tried to
kill his father once with a crude bow and arrow that glanced off John's
head. Some reports say they kept him in
a drunken state until his promised time of return had clearly been broken. Other reports say that the Waggoners asked
Katy (Catherine) Hardman, a widow and neighbor to seduce him and convince him
to stay. Whatever the truth, Peter did
stay in Lewis County the remainder of his 93 years, probably for fear of his
life if he returned to the Shawnees. He
did marry Catherine and raised a family.
He was an excellent hunter and taught the boys how to make bows and
hunt. He farmed but always longed for
his Shawnee way of life, refusing to give up many of their customs. He spoke in broken English always and it is
reported that his children also spoke in a broken English manner. He wore his hair long but not in a ponytail,
his ears were pierced, but stopped wearing the earrings. At his death, he asked to be laid on the
floor/ground to sit in the "Indian position" as was the custom. He died at 93 and is buried in the Old
Hamony Cemetery near Jane Lew, Lewis Co., WV.
There is an existing photograph of Peter Waggoner at an advanced age. His grave is now marked by a modern monument
by his ancestors.
There is a story in
local Lewis Co. History, that his Shawnee wife came to Lewis County to look for
her husband. The residents, once
realizing who she was, told her that Peter had died. She spent the night camping on a creek and wailing and mourning
through the night. The next day she was
found drowned in the creek. This was
never told to Peter. The demise of his
two Shawnee daughters is not known. The
Shawnees of Ohio first moved to the Missouri/Iowa/Kansas territories prior to
being located in Oklahoma. They would have been born in the early 1800's and
may have lived to be enumerated on a census somewhere. Their names, however, are lost.
