Merideth, Meredith, Merydith Family of Kent County, Delaware & their Descendants

The Merideth Family of Kent Co., Delaware

My ancestor, Taylor Merideth was born about 1780 in the state of Delaware. He was married several times and had a large family. I believe he died about 1850 in Delaware. In my search for information about Taylor I have accumulated much information about the Merediths of Delaware & their descendants who migrated west. This web site is my attempt to share much of that information with other Meredith researchers. Most of the posted information was abstracted or transcribed from original sources such as Wills, Probate Records, Land Records, Tax Lists, Indenture Records, Letters, Bible Records, etc. Anyone having similar information which they would like to post please e-mail me.

Probate

The following are Meredith family Probate Records from Kent County, Delaware, abstracted from the records of the State Archive in Dover. Those records after 1893 have not been abstracted. They are listed as Index entries. If anyone needs an abstract of any of these e-mail me.

Probate Records

I believe that the progenator of the Meredith family in Kent Co., Delaware was Robert Meredith senior of Dorchester Co., Maryland. The following are items from Robert's probate in 1727.

Land Records

The following are links to abstracts from land records which contain valuable genealogical information about the Meredith family of Delaware & Eastern Maryland:

This deed contains proof that Job had at least two wives. It names his first wife, Rebecca Davis, and is signed by Job & his second wife Lydia. It is also signed by his sons & daughter by wife number one.

Job Merydith to John Potts 1786

This deed was Acknowledged in open court in 1793. It confirms a transaction made by the fathers of both parties in 1747. It names both their fathers. Surprise! Job's father is not Job.

Thomas Moor to Job Merydith sr.

An 1808 deed which proves that Davis Meredith of Kent Co., De and Davis Meredith of Monongalia Co., Va. are the same person.

Davis Meredith and Wife (Of Monongalia Co., Va.) to Job Meredith

This 1760 Deed names the heirs of John Wheeler including Robert Meredith & wife Rachel. Looks like Rachel's last name was Wheeler.

CHURCH

The Cow Marsh Baptist Church was built on a corner of the Meredith homestead. The land was first leased to the church for a token amount by Job Meredith d.1793. Later the land was sold, also for a token amount, to the church by his son Job Meredith jr. Following is a list of church members copied from the original records by Miss Bertha Frazier in 1947. The copy I have is typed but has been photocopied so many times that it is hard to read. Names which I am unsure of are in brackets. I don't know what happened to the original church records, but would certainly like to.
