Drayton Methodist Church c1925 Drayton Methodist Church The Methodists were the first in the area to hold church services. Rev. Ezra C. Adams came in June 1848 and settled across the road from his son-in-law, Benjamin Jones who had taken up lot 2, con 10 Peel Twp. Worship services were held in the homes, then in the school house until 1869. A large frame church was then erected on the Jones farm, and opened in 1870. Benjamin Jones had been a local preacher, but he died in 1870, and Rev. Adams died in 1871 The Methodist Church was on the Peel Circuit, which was organized by Rev. Robert Lochead in 1849. By 1862, the Circuit included 19 preaching places, with two ministers and 13 local preachers. In 1882 the Circuit had been cut down to five charges; Drayton, Zion, Parker, Goldstone, and Bloombury (Creekbank), with a father and son team of ministers, Revs. James and George McAlister, who received salaries of $400 and $200. In 1890, the new white brick church was erected at the corner of Main and Elm Streets, at a cost of $5,000. In 1894, the old church was moved, intact, down the hill, was bricked, and became the three-house apartment opposite Union Street, now known as the Terrance. The Methodist Church became United in 1925. The Goshen Church was closed in 1948, and Glen Allan joined with the Drayton-Zion charge in 1959. Springhill Wesleyan Methodist Church - thanks to David Frank of Ottawa, Ontario for this information. Situated on a part of Lot 2, Concession 4, this Wesleyan Methodist Church is listed in a Peel Circuit publication for 1856-67, when their mission contributions totalled 10 pounds, 10 shillings, 3 pence. Names listed were Edmonds, Reid, Garbutt, Cosford, Hanstock, Buck, Bond, Hall, Tanner and Meldron. When one considers the time when these gifts were made, they are quite remarkable and indicate the priority placed on the church by these early settlers. We read in the June, 1862 Elora Observer, that the new Wesleyan Methodist Church at Springhill was opened for service. Speakers were the Rev. Mr. James Spencer in the morning and again at 6 pm, and the Rev. Mr. Cosford at 3 pm. At each service the church was filled with at least 400 persons seated on the platforms outside. The building was of brick, with a basement and cost at least $1,400. Little more information is available on this church, until we learn of its removal across the township line into Maryborough by a group of Mennonite farmers sometime between 1914 - 1919. However, this Mennonite settlement didn't last and they returned to Waterloo County. Once more the little church was vacant. In the 1940's it was moved once again to Palmerston, where it became the place of worship for a newly formed Missionary congregation. When a new church was built, our little church on the move found itself being taken across town to the property of Norwell Secondary School, where it stands today, used for music and drama classes. There is a tombstone of sad note in the Springhill Cemetery of a preacher who burned to death. It reads: Rev. Thomas Garbutt, son of John and Mary, March 19, 1869. Aged 33 yr. 4 months Death was sudden but his plight was burning. A member of the Wesleyan Methodist Church. Entered ministry in 1860. His faith was strong, his life brief but with spirit. "Though dead, he yet speaketh" African Methodist Church A Negro Church was located on E 1/2 Lot 16, Con 4, Peel Twp., and was marked on 1906 Atlas Map, as an "African Methodist Church". It was surrounded by a small cemetery. Rev. Samuel Brown, a black minister, owned the land on which the church was built, and was buried in the cemetery in 1853, at age of 67 years. Ebenezer Primitive Methodist Church The Wesleyan Methodist Church, a log building, was the first church in the area, and was erected on the Day farm, lot 13, con 10. It had a centre aisle. The church was surrounded by the pioneer cemetery. A new Methodist Church was built on a different location, lot 11, con 11 by John Grose, and named Ebenezer Church, meaning "Song of Praise". In this church the men sat on one side of a main aisle, while the women sat on the other side. George White, an early settler, donated a shed for horses and rigs The large white brick church was built in 1880. It had cushioned seats, with a door to each pew. Local preachers took the services. The two Methodist Churches combined about 1900. The new Goldstone Church was built in 1903, on Lot 13, Con 10, size 30 X 40 feet, and 14 foot ceiling. It became the United Church in 1925, and is now on the Alma Charge. Tornado strikes...about 3 p.m. on May 15, 1884, cutting a swath about 120 rods wide. sweeping barns, stables and fences before it. The Canada Methodist Church in Goldstone was unroofed, and the organ and other furniture were badly damaged. Monuments in the cemetery were blown down and broken. This was reported in the Elora Observer newspaper. Primitive Methodist Church theology - Assurence brought a new birth and a personal reconciliation with God through the Merits of Atonement, the "new man" was freely bestowed grace. Perfection - was the strive to achieve holiness through informing and inspiring his own efforts to lead a sinless life. Glen Allan Methodist Church This church was built in 1832, the first church in the hamlet. It was originally Primitive Methodist. It was located across Main Street, from the Anglican Church. By 1871, it was a Wesleyan Methodist Church and their minister was Rev. Isacc Crane. In 1923, the Methodist Church was destroyed by a cyclone, and the members uited with Knox Presbyterian Church. The Methodist Minister became the minister at Knox, but he lived in the former parsonage. Goshen Methodist Church Methodist Church on lot 13, con 7, Peel Twp. was the church that served this community. It was located a short distance south of the Goldstone sideroad. Goshen was on a three-point charge, wih Goshen service in the morning, Goldstone in the afternoon; while Stirton on the Peel-Maryborough townline south of Drayton had the evening service. Goshen was about four miles from Goldstone. Goshen Church became United in 1925, and was closed in 1948. Bloomsbury Methodist Church It was located at Creekbank, on a Fisher farm, at the corner of the Drayton line. It was built in 1882, and served until about 1915, when it was closed. It was dismantled, and taken to Hollen by teams and sleighs, and was rebuilt; and became their Methodist Church, later United Church. Bloomsbury Church was surrounded by a cemetery, which is kept in fine condition by the Alma Horticultural Society. The stones were assembled into a cairn in 1937. Mount Hope Methodist Church Located on the farm of J. Norris on the north side of Con 16 Lot 14 along with a cemetery. Alma Methodist Church Records date back to 1856. Alma was Wesleyan, but Bethel and Goldstone were Primitive Methodist. Early lay ministers included the names of Isaac, Trask, Hay, Hill, Graham, Bailey and Norris. Alma was on the Elora circuit until 1884, when there was a union of the Methodist bodies in Canada. In 1875, the cornerstone was laid for the new brick church in Alma, by Robert Rudd, the Sunday School Superintendent. Cost of the church was $3,500. William Stafford of Elora did the masonry and brick work. Size is 54 X 34 feet, and 18 foot ceiling. The old Methodist Church was located on the corner of King and Rebecca Streets on the Pilkington corner of town. In 1900, Alma and Bethel became a two-point charge and went United in 1925. Stirton Methodist Church The Methodist Church on the Peel-Maryborough townline south of Drayton was on a charge with Goshen and Goldstone and had the evening service. Olivet Wesleyan Methodist Church - thanks to David Frank of Ottawa, Ontario for this information. The the report of the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society for the years 1856 to 1863, we find Farr's Branch as a yearly contributor. The names Switzer, Bruce, Stinson, Sanderson, Atkinson, Meldron, Thomas, Powley and Farr are recorded. On the Peel reference map of 1877, a church is indicated on the west half of Lot 12, Concession 5. Since George Farr owned the east half of Lot 12 and the west half of Lot 13 we can assume that Farr's Branch became Olivet church. They built a Methodist church called the St. Olivet's Church on the south-west corner of the farm now owned by Leon Kraemer. Services were conducted here on Sunday afternoons by visiting clergyman. This church was in use until 1922, when one fateful day a cyclone swept the district and this little white brick church and its driving shed were destroyed. Norman Schill rescued the front door from demolition and stored it in his driving shed. In the summer of 1997, his nephew donated it to the Wellington County Museum. In the 1860's Winterbourne was a mission project of Trinity Methodist Church in Waterloo. When the Rev. Miliken was preaching with all the gusto he could muster to win souls for the Lord, a little black animal with a white strip down its back, rushed into the room and disrupted the meeting. Even the offering was forgotten in the haste that day to vacate the room.

Their daughter Lavinia Harriet died 12 Feb 1860 in Goderich 6 mos old. In 1869 he moved to the United States and united with the Detroit Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1874 he was stationed at Clinton and Macon, Adrian District.

Was located on lot 10, con 14 on the east side of the road, between the old school and the corner and had brick veneer.
In 1868 there was the construction of a Methodist Church at Parker. Robert McKim and his family were enthusiastic Methodists and played a major part in the construction and fundraising for it. The church opened on December 26, 1869, with three services and a tea, the highlight of which was a 2 1/2 hour talk by Rev. Laughlin Taylor on his trip to the Holy Land. The collections that day completely retired the debt on the church.
Shown on the 1877 Atlas Map, it dates back to about 1856. It was disbanded and sold in November 1919, and was torn down.
