The Aaron Clement Family
Ancestral History

The Clement Family: Beginnings in America

The Clement family ancestral history begins with our first known Clement ancestor in America, Jan Clement. While we know very little about his life, we are fortunate to know as much as we do. The exact year and location of his birth are unknown, but it is likely that Jan Clement was born between 1645 and 1650. We know that he came to America in 1665. The source for verifying this information is John Sander's Centennial Address Relating to the Early History of Schenectady and Its First Settlers. Sanders records that Jan Clement took the oath of allegiance to the British crown in September 1687.

At that time, Jan stated that he had been in America for twenty-two years. Thus, the year of his arrival in this country was 1665.

We also know that Jan Clement married Marie Boucquet (Bouquet, Bokee). The marriage probably took place in 1675 ot 1676. Marie was the daughter of Jerome Boucquet and Anne Torion, who emigrated to America in 1663. For more information about Jerome and Anne Torion Boucquet, read First Families: Our Beginnings in America.

"According to Cornelius Clement, ... Jan was a French Huguenot who, during the religious unrest preceding the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, fled from France to Holland and from there to America, where he settled at New Utrecht, Kings County, New York." (Merton L. Dillon, The Clement Family, 1949, p. 6)

Cornelius Clement (1895) also recorded that Jan Clement "was a mason by trade." (p.2)

Merton L. Dillon further records that "... while living at New Utrecht, he (Jan) was also a farmer, like most other early settlers. He is listed on the assessment rolls of 1675 and 1676 as the owner of a horse and cows valued at £46.10." (Dillon, The Clement Family, p. 6)

The Clement Family

Second Generation and Their Children

Pieter Clement is known to have married twice. His first marriage appears to have been to Anna Ruyting in Schenectady, on November 26, 1707. Jonathan Pearson in Contributions for the Genealogies of the Descendants of the First Settlers of the Patent and City of Schenectady, From 1662 to 1800, records the following information:

Pieter, of the Woestyne, jonge man geboren in N. Utrecht en wonende tot Schannechady, m, Anna Ruyting geboren en wonende tot Schannechtady, Nov. 26, 1707, in Albany. Ch.bp: Marytje, Oct. --, 1710, m. Samuel moved to Michigan in the spring of 1835. He was the first of his family to do so. He worked with cabinet makers and carpenters in Detroit, and, although he purchased large tracts of land in Pittsford Township, Hillsdale County, Michigan, it seems he never lived there. He drove a team and wagon the entire distance, arriving a few days before the rest of the family, who had been detained in Buffalo, New York because of ice on the lake. Lycker lived with his parents until his marriage in 1840, when he built a house on his farm in section 33 of Wheatland Township, Hillsdale County. (Dillon, The Clement Family, 1949, p. 13)
