The Flower Hill Cemetery
On the Monfort Farm
Port Washington, Long Island


On a visit to the Town of North Hempstead Historian's Office in Spring 1982, the compiler was given a list of those interred at the Flower Hill Cemetery in Port Washington, formerly called Cow Neck, home for several generations of Hegemans and allied families. The list was compiled in April 1947 by  George B. Knowles, whose brother﷓in﷓law,  Burtis Hegeman Monfort, currently owns the property wherein the old cemetery is located. The Town Historian's Office also has a number of fine quality photographs of the memorials in this cemetery. A visit to the cemetery by the writer left him very grateful to Mr. Knowles and photographer for their efforts as the cemetery is in sad condition. Few of the stones remain upright and fewer yet are now legible. Mr. Knowles gives this preamble to his list:

        The Flower Hill Cemetery was originally part of the farm belonging to  Daniel and  Aeltie Rapalje. On July 16, 1786, [they] sold this burial ground for four Pounds to:  Adrian,  Peter and  Hendrick Onderdonk;  Martin Schenck;  Ann Rapalje;  Thomas Dodge;   Andries Hegeman, Sr. and Jr.;   Elbert Hegeman, Sr. and Jr. The property is now owned by  Burtis Hegeman Monfort and is known as the Monfort Farm. It is situated at the head of Main Street, about 500 ft. from the main highway and you must pass through the farm to get to the cemetery.

This compiler will add here that the cemetery is located directly behind the Port Washington Post Office. Additional notes on the Cemetery are made in the main text to these pages, courtesy of  Burt H. Titus.

Mr.  Knowles goes on to describe his methodology for creating the list and describes some of the features he found notable. This compiler will omit this description, but will include his listing of the family names found. . ..

!     JAMES NOBLE: Sacred to the memory of James Noble, who was born in Pittsfield, Bershire Co., Mass. April 3, 1796. Departed this life Newark Valley, Tioga County, N.[ew] York. December 1, 1846 age 50 yrs. 8 months.

!     GRACE NOBLE: Sacred to the memory of Grace, wife of James Noble. Daughter of John & Martha Hegeman. Departed this life January 10, 1845 age 44 yrs. 6 mo. 1 day.

!     MARY SMITH: In memory of Mary Smith, widow of Elbert Hegeman who departed this life October 11, 1835, in the 83rd yr. of her life.

!     ELBERT HEGEMAN: In memory of Elbert Hegeman who departed this life October 18, 1816 in his 75th yr.

!     MARIA ONDERDONK: wife of Elbert Hegeman June 1859 ﷓﷓﷓﷓﷓ (worn and broken).

!     ANDREW J. HEGEMAN: son of Elbert and Maria Hegeman Died Jan. 5, 1818 aged 47 yrs. 7 mos. 21 days.

!     ANDREW AND  JAMES HEGEMAN: In Memory of Infant Children of Elbert and Maria Hegeman Andrew & James who departed this life Jan. 22, 1818 aged 7 mos. 23 days. "Suffer little children to come unto me".

!     CATHERINE HEGEMAN: Catherine, wife of Elbert Hegeman died March 4, 1860 age 82 yrs.
