Biography

1841:

At the 1841 census James and Caroline were living in Barrow Green in the parish of Teynham (HO107/0476/4 District 2 p.2).   Ages in this census are rounded to the nearest 5 years. James is said to be 25 and Caroline 20. Another older James, aged 65 is head of the household. His age is given as 65 and he is an agricultural labourer. It has been assumed that he is the father of the younger James. One child, Edward (2) is living in the house.

At the same time in Linsted there is a John Streatfield, aged 20 and shoemaker, living in Green Street (HO107/474/3 district 3 p16).

1843:

John Streatfield dies in the parish of Linsted. He was 22 years old, a cordwainer (shoe maker) and died from consumption. The death was reported by James Streatfield of Teynham.

1847:

Ann Elizabeth Streatfield aged just 7 months died in Teynham on the 16 April 1847 from hooping cough [sic], after an illness of 14 days. She is listed as the daughter of James Streatfield, a labourer. James reported her death on the 23 April.

1851:

A James Streetfield dies in the first quarter of the year in the Faversham registration district. It may be the older man from the 1841 census.

The younger James and family are still living in Teynham when the census is taken, in a house that appears to possibly be called Brickmanstane (piece HO 107/1626 folio 565 page 17 schedule 77). James and Caroline are both said to be 34 years old, which gives their year of birth as 1817. Living with them are their children Edward (11), Jane (9), John (6) and William (2). All the children were born in Teynham. James and Edward are working as agricultural labourers.

1861:

The family are now living in Lynsted in Cellar Hill when the census is taken (piece RG 9/527) folio 72 page 12 schedule 62). James and Caroline say they are 43, which gives a dat of birth in 1818. Edward and William are still at home, but there is no sign of John. They have been joined by a sister Eliza aged 7 born in Teynham. All the menfolk are working as agricultural labourers.

1871:

The family are still living in Cellar Hill for this census (piece RG10/980 folio 90 page 10 schedule 53).  Only William and Eliza Ann of the children are at home. James and William  are working as agricultural labourers, while Eliza is a domestic servant.

1881:

James and Caroline are living alone at Cellar Hill in Lynsted when this census is taken (piece RG 11/971 folio 86 page 2 schedule 11). James is still working as a farm labourer.

1891:

James and Caroline are back in Teynham, living in a cottage on the village green (piece RG 12/715 folio 85 page 1 schedule 5). They have been joined by their daughter Eliza who is still unmarried although 35 years old. James still toils on as a farm labourer and Eliza as a general domestic servant.

1892:

A Caroline Streatfield died in the first quarter of the year in the Faversham registration district.

1899:

A James Streetfield dies in the second quarter of the year in the Faversham registration district.

1901:

No sign of James or Caroline in the census.
