KILLED IN THE ORE HILLS A lump of Ore Strikes Henry Christ on
the Head and crushes it. Another Accident, which resulted in the
death of a poor unfortunate, occurred on the Cornwall ore hills yesterday
afternoon. Henry Christ, a man who for many years was employed on
the hills, while at work in the mines was unfortunate as to be hit on the
head by a heavy piece of ore that rolled down the embankment crushing his
skull. The deceased was aged probably 55 years and was well known
at Cornwall. The lump of ore which struck him crushed the skull in
such a horrible manner as to scatter the brains in every direction, and
after the terrible accident his comrades were compelled to gather the brains
and place them in a handkerchief. The deceased leaves a wife and
a large family of children.

Discharged at Washington DC.
10/20/1883 Served at Martinsburg, Va. on or about March 1865. I contacted Rheumatism, caused by marching, exposure and lying upon snow and damp ground during the night. I am affected very much, so that at times I am unable to perform manual labor. I claim a pension. I was not treated in hospital
3/17/1884 Kind Sir: Henry Christ's claim for invalid pension No 499562 came to my place and showed me that his claim was rejected. I have nothing in it but cannot understand that men get pentions that can do a day's work better than this claimant, Henry Christ can. I have known the man for many years and know nothing of him but what is right. Have this decision stand. Have the kindness and let me know and oblige. Jacob H Mase
6/24/1890 Dr Washington Burg, Durlach, Co of Lancaster, Pa age 52 regular practicing physician of 30 years standing, that he has this day carefully examined Henry Christ who was a Private in Co G 195th Regt Pa Vol and finds him afflicted as follows. That said private I find suffering from Atrophy of the muscles of the right leg with an enlargement or bony excrescence of the instep upon the right side of foot caused in my opinion from former attacks of rheumatism. The above causes him to limp from want of power sufficient in said limb. The consequence is and inability to do active manual labor. I know him to have suffered with the above afflictions for the last 17 years He is not able to do 1/3 days work.

Notes for Susan Dunmoyer:
Indian Run Cemetery outside of Mount Airy, Lancaster Co. There are
4 tombstones with the name of Christ on them. All the dates are about
illegible. The names are from L-R Hiram Christ, Margaret Christ,
Henry Christ, Jefferson Christ. Cannot find out anything on these
stones at this time. They look like childrens' stones.
I went back to the cemetery in 1999 and the stones are even worse. The only name that I could read was Hiram. Maybe chalk will work. I must try it when it gets warm.
There were Dammyer's buried around these stones. I don't know
if that means anything or not. I must investigate Henry married to
Susanna Dunmoyer a little closer. Possibly these are her parents
and children.
