Hunziker Coat of Arms
The Coat of Arms of Niklaus Hunziker (1510-1587) of Aarau, Switzerland can be found at
Adrianne's Hunsucker site.
Coats of Arms for Hunzikers from Moosleerau, Leimbach, and Gontenschwil can be found at Dr. Peter Steiner's Hunziker history at the Historische Vereinigung Wynental site.
A coat of arms for Hunziker von Arisdorf can be found at at the Staatsarchiv des Kantons Basel-Landschaft site.
This coat of arms is very similar to the municipal coat of arms for the Gemeinde Hunzenschwil, an Aargau municipality. That is both focus on a rampant hound (dog).
The striking similarity causes me to wonder whether the histories of "Hunzenschwil" and "Hunziker" are related.

Edward Hunsaker has a book of Hunsaker history compiled by Q. Maurice Hunsaker, in 1993, with a black and white line drawing of a Hunsaker coat of arms. Edward reports that the books discusses the image with the following excerpt:
"The Hunziker Coat of Arms, which we have considered our own for many years, is one to which we have no proven right as of this moment except through our connection to the Hunzikers of Aarau. In 1875, Mrs. Gertrude Baird first provided the Coat of Arms to Joseph and this reached the U.S. as a pen sketch. In 1935, Meltrude and Orpha Hunsaker Stohl had Mrs.Baird produce the Coat of Arms in its original colors. I do not know the location of this colored example, or even if it is still in existence. Julius Billiter, a Swiss genealogist wrote, 'In all probability it belonged as much to your ancestral line as to the people who have adopted it over here.'"
The book contains a small photocopied version with the date 1621.
This drawing depicts (from the top down)...
- 1. a dog,
- 2. sitting on top of a knight's helmet,
- 3. which is placed on top of a shield titled to the right.
- 4. The shield has the same dog image emblazoned full-frame & standing upright on its hind legs (the dog appears to be short-haired, medium to short ears which lay forward (meaning they don't point upward like a pinned Doberman), and it has a collar which appears to be a band with studs or spikes),
- 5. with a six-pointed star in the upper left corner and the lower right corner of the shield.
- 6. Beneath the shield is a graceful banner unrolling with "HUNSAKER" written on it.
- 7. Three large flowing plumes envelop both sides of the entire coat of arms.
Edward reports that the look of the image is one of strength, pride, military, sophistication.
