·Elizabeth Fowler·
Fact Sheet

This is what we know:

Elizabeth Fowler was born somewhere in Georgia on June 6, 1812. She died in Choctaw County, Mississippi on September 24, 1886 and she is buried in Greensboro Cemetery where her headstone still stands.

She married a Woods sometime before her first son, Stephen, was born in 1832. Per an article published in the Plaindealer the week of May 24, 2000 by Mr. Bernard Campbell, "the Confederate Army Records Division Headquarters in Meridian, MS of 1863 show: Stephen WOODS b. 1832 in Marion County, Alabama age 32, as enrolled in the Confederate Army 30 Apr 1864 from Choctaw County, Mississippi."

A spouse less Elizabeth and her eight children were on the 1850 Choctaw County, Mississippi Census. Stated in this document, we find that her second son, Jeremiah W. Woods, was born around 1834 in Mississippi.

This means that Elizabeth and her husband moved to Mississippi somewhere between 1832 and 1834, between the births of her first two sons.

They had their son, Joseph Harvey Woods on February 14,1841 in Choctaw County. Before that, we are not sure where in Mississippi they were living.

Elizabeth's last child on this 1850 Census document, Henry Franklin Woods, was born in November of 1847 in Mississippi, most likely in Choctaw County.

Thus concluding that her husband died or left the home sometime during her pregnancy or sometime AFTER Henry was born and BEFORE the time of the 1850 Census.

The 1850 census also tells us that she was living next door to the Furnifold Wood family.

Furnifold's path to Choctaw County is pretty clear.

He is on the 1830 census in Sampson County, North Carolina (M-19-122, pg.125).
In North Carolina, he and his wife, Anna, had 4 children:
*James Blackmon Wood b: 23 DEC 1822 in North Carolina
*Anna W. Wood b: 1825 in North Carolina
*William G. Wood b: 18 DEC 1830 in North Carolina
*Furnifold Wood III b: 11 JUL 1834 in North Carolina

In 1840, he is found on the Henry County, Alabama census (M-704-6, pg.151) While in Alabama, they had three more children:
*Allen C. Wood b: 1837 in Alabama
*Abigail Wood (ii) b: 1839 in Alabama
*Young Monroe Wood b: 1844 in Alabama

And finally, he can be found living next to our Elizabeth on the 1850 census in Choctaw County, Mississippi (Pg.21)

So, Elizabeth and the elusive Mr. Woods settled in Mississippi somewhere around the years 1832 and 1834.

Furnifold arrived next door a good 10 years later sometime after Young was born in 1844. Elizabeth later married Furnifold's eldest son, James Blackmon Wood who was some 10 years her junior. Together, they had five children.

These are my questions:
¤Did Elizabeth and Mr. Woods settle in only one place in Mississippi? Or, did they live somewhere else before they settled in Choctaw County? (Choctaw County was formed in 1833 from Monroe, Lowndes, Yazoo and Madison Counties.)

¤Why did they settle in Mississippi? Was he given land for time served in the military?

¤Did they know the Wood family from Alabama? Did they live in Henry County, Alabama along with the Wood family?

¤Why did the Wood family move to Choctaw County? Was it to be near the Woods? Or, was he given land for time served in the military or was the land purchased with cash and they never met before they became neighbors?

¤Why did Mr. Woods leave or die? Was he killed in Battle? If so, what war?

¤Can we locate the land on which they both were living on in 1850 and check the original land documents to find our Mr. Woods?
