DECEASED MEMBERS

James J. Higgins, a member and business agent of Union No. 21 (Chicago) Illinois, died February 6, 1917, of heart disease. Brother Higgins' health had been on the decline for the past two years, and close observers were well aware that the brother had seen his best days. He was born in the State of Ohio in 1859, and reached only the age of fifty-six years and seven months. His father was a bricklayer, who in 1870 moved with his family to Chicago. James was then eleven years old. He soon commenced work under his father's tuition, and in the next few years learned bricklaying. In 1881 he became a member of No. 21 of Illinois, then called "The United Order of American Bricklayers and Stone Masons' Union," and very soon became an active member. Forceful of speech and aggressive in manner, he was often appreciated in the days of organizing the bricklayers and stone masons of Chicago, who had suffered the relinquishment of a union in existence prior to the
great Chicago fire. A stanch union man as he was and with the forceful arguments at his command, it was often difficult for the "shrinker" to get by without becoming a member of that union. However, years passed by, and during the panicky years of 1895, 1896, 1897 and 1898 conditions in Chicago were such that it became necessary to elect four business agents, and having fresh in mind the ability of James Higgins, the choice naturally fell on him to be one of the four, and the sixth of April, 1896, he became business agent. He held the position to the day of his death. He was a business agent such as was needed in those days. Many a job he cleared up where other of his colleagues would have failed.

Brother Higgins' services and principles as a union man will remain in the memories of Union No. 21 of Illinois forever. The funeral took place February 8, and was attended by representatives of all labor organizations affiliated with the Building Trades in Chicago and an abundance of floral decorations covered what remained of the once famous business agent of No. 21 of Illinois.

Rest in peace.

History of Pike County, Illinois By Chapman, Chas. C., 1880

Dr. James Montgomery Higgins, youngest son of John and Elizabeth Higgins, was born in Montgomery Co., Md., July 30, 1808 ; educated chiefly in Rockville, Md.; studied medicine in Washington, D. C.; graduated in the medical department of Columbia College in that city March 11, 1829, and has followed the practice of his profession ever since, over half a century now. Jan. 25, 1831, he married Margaret Davis in Bourbon Co., Ky., niece of Gov. Edward Tiffin, first Governor of Ohio ; in the following spring he emigrated to Jacksonville, 111., and in Nov., 1834, he removed with his wife and infant child to Griggsville, this county, where physicians were scarcer than in Jacksonville ; in 1846 he was elected Representative to the State Legislature ; in 1848 he was elected Medical Superintendent of the Illinois State Hospital for the Insane at Jacksonville, where he superintended the building of the original hospital, at a cost surprisingly low, as attested by
a Legislative commission; he opened the institution in the fall of 1851, and conducted it with great acceptability until the summer of 1854, when he returned to Griggsville, where he has practiced ever since except in 1862-3, when he was Surgeon of the 114th Reg. Ill. Vol.

Besides an infant son that died in Jacksonville in 1832, the Doctor and his wife have had 6 children, as follows : Isaac Newton, James M., Edward Tiffin, Mary E., Drusilla C. and Lizzie M.,—all living except the eldest daughter, Mrs. Mary E. Jones. Isaac N. studied and graduated in medicine, but has followed journalism up to the present time. In company with his brother James M., he published the Pike County Union, the first newspaper in Griggsville, and which was afterward transferred to Pittsfield; subsequently he became editor-in-chief of the Illinois State Register at Springfield, and after several years he became managing editor of the Chicago Republican, and for 10 years past has occupied that relation to the San Francisco Morning Call, a daily paper of 45,000 circulation. James M., jr., a practical printer, has been connected with the Illinois State Register in various relations, a part of the time one of its editors. Edward T. holds an important position in the "W. U. Telegraph office at Chicago. Mary E. married J. Howard Jones in 1861, and died Aug. 9, 1874, in Chicago, leaving 2 sons and an infant daughter. Drusilla C. became the second wife of Mr. Jones on the Christmas of 1878, and they reside in Chicago. Lizzie M. is a teacher in the public schools of Griggsville.

- Biography of Hamer J. Higgins -

Source: Portrait and biographical album of McLean County, Ill (Published in Chicago in 1887)

H. J. HIGGINS, is of the firm of Higgins & Co., marble and granite manufacturers, Bloomington, who are transacting an extensive and profitable business. Their main office is located on East Front street and occupies Nos. 227 and 229. The subject of this biography was born in Georgetown, Ohio, in 1840. His parents were Hon. John J. and Martha C. (Hetterick) Higgins, the father of Maryland and the mother of Virginia. John J. Higgins was an attorney at law and successfully practiced in the various courts of Ohio. He was prominently identified with the politics of that State, being elected a member of the Legislature and holding the offices of County Judge and Sheriff of Brown County.

The grandfather of our subject, Col. Robert Higgins, was one of the stanch old veterans of 1876, and contributed his full share toward the emancipation of the colonies. After this was effected he purchased over 1,000 acres of land in Southern Ohio. He had previously been a slave-holder, but becoming disgusted with the peculiar institution, gave to his slaves their liberty. He was a man of prominence and closely identified with political affairs in the early history of the Buckeye State. He practiced law and served as District Judge, and spent the main part of his life at Higginsport, which was named after him.

John J. Higgins, the father of our subject, was the youngest son of his parents and died in Ohio in 1857. His wife survived him until 1873. Of their family of eleven children, seven are now living, viz., Robert, Mary, Annie, Lydia, Mattie, Hamer J. and Sallie. All are residents of Ohio except our subject.

Hamer J. Higgins remained at home until twenty-one years of age and until after graduating from the High School. About that time the war came on and at the first call for troops he enlisted in the three years' service in the 59th Ohio Infantry, and afterward re-enlisted in the 192d Ohio Infantry, remaining in the army until the surrender of Lee. During this time he was in twenty-nine pitched battles. He enlisted as a private and was mustered out as First Lieutenant. He was at Shiloh, Stone River, Chickamauga, Mission Ridge and through the entire Atlanta campaign, fighting 120 successive days before the fall of Atlanta.

At the close of his military career young Higgins returned to Ohio and was appointed Deputy Clerk of the Common Pleas Court, which position he filled for two years, and then in 1868 came to Illinois. He commenced here with a capital of $10 in cash, and after an experience of eight years, part of which time was spent in traveling, he established his present business in 1876. The beautiful marble front building, a part of which is occupied as his business office, was erected in 1886. He keeps two men on the road and the whole force of employees ranges from eighteen to twenty-five men. His present status in the business community as will be seen is due to his own persevering energy. He commenced at the foot of the latter and his present position is his just reward.

Mr. Higgins was married in Bloomington in 1870, to Miss Alice De Vore, a native of his own State and daughter of Jackson and Hannah De Vore. Of their union there have been born eight children Mattie, Frank, Elmo, Maude, Charles, Ina, Robert and Lilian. Mr. Higgins is Republican in politics, and socially is identified with the I. O. O. F., the G. A. R. and A. O. U. W.

ROBERT H. HIGGINS. Georgetown. There is no family in Brown County whose official relations to the county stand out with such prominence as those of the Higgins family. Col. Robert Higgins was a native of Virginia, and the owner of a large plantation on the South Branch of the Potomac River. - He was a large dealer in cattle, driving them to the different Eastern markets. An incident is related of him : While participating in his periodical drives, he chanced to stop at a hotel, where he found a Guinea negro. strangely tatooed, chained to a pillar of the front porch. The owner wanted to sell the negro. and the price asked was 840. Col. Higgins examined the negro, found him perfect, in regard to physical condition, and asked the negro if he would like to become a laborer on his plantation. After surveying the Colonel from head to foot, the negro replied that, believing from his appearance, the Colonel was a humane and just master, he would be willing to enter his service. The Colonel immediately purchased the negro. who was of immense proportions, rather inclined to be vicious, and told him to assist in the drive. The negro did as requested, and after the Colonel had removed his chains, accompanied him home. He became a faithful servant. About this time the Revolutionary war commenced, and the Colonel became a Captain in the Virginia Volunteers of the Continental Line. Upon leaving home, he put the plantation and its inhabitants in the care of Old Jack, his new purchase, and started for the war. During the battle of Germantown, he was captured by the British, and confined on Long Island, New York Harbor, where he was kept imprisoned for three years and nine months. At the expiration of this time, the Colonel returned home, and found that Old Jack " had made an excellent manager and overseer. The plantation and buildings were in good shape, the crops large and well housed, and the servants in good condition. Also, during his absence, the Colonel’s wife had died, and " Old Jack " was caring for the motherless children as only a beloved servant can. Col. Higgins' subsequently removed to Kentucky, where he married Mary Jollifie, a native of Winchester, Va., and were Old Jack " proved his faithfulness till his death. ' The Colonel was possessor of a land grant in the present Brown County, and in 1798 settled on the present site of Higginsport, which place was named after him. He was the only officer in Virginia who settled and occupied his own land grant in the State of Ohio. (So says a good authority.) Col. Higgins resided at Higginsport until a few years before his death, when he removed to Georgetown, and there died in 1825. He left three children by his second wife - John J., Robert V. and Lydia. He had eight children by his first wife, but none of them settled in Brown County. Mrs. Higgins departed this life in 1866 or 1867.

John J . Higgins, their eldest son, was born on the site of Higginsport, and there reared. He attended school at Augusta, Ky., and subsequently read law at Georgetown, where he located in 1822. He practiced his profession awhile, and afterward engaged in mercantile pursuits. In 1838, he was elected Sheriff' of Brown County, and served two terms. He then removed to a farm in Clark Township, but in 1845 was chosen to represent Brown County in the State Legislature. In 1851. he was elected the first Probate Judge, under the new State Constitution, and died at Georgetown in 1857. He married Martha C. Heterick, of Winchester, Va. Mrs. Higgins died in July, 1880. Capt. Robert H. Higgins, the subject of this sketch, was the eldest of eleven children, seven of whom are living. He was reared in Georgetown, and in 1848-49 was an attendant at Hillsboro Academy. After leaving college, he read law with David G. Devore, and was admitted to the bar in May, 1854. The same year, he accompanied a friend to Kansas, where he soon after was appointed Clerk of the Territory of Kansas, under Gov. Reader. He served in this position eighteen months, and then resigned. He returned to Georgetown, and opened a law office for practice. In 1857, he was elected Clerk of the Court of Common Pleas, of Brown County, and re-elected in 1860. In 1861, he raised Company D, of the Fifty ninth Ohio Volunteer Infantry, was elected Captain, and accompanied them to the field. He served three years and one month in this position; was in command of the Regiment in East Tennessee, and the Atlanta campaign, and was honorably discharged November 1.1864. He engaged in mercantile pursuits, and in 1866 was again elected Clerk of Common Pleas Court; re-elected successively in 1869 and 1872, and subsequently served as a clerk in the Adjutant General s office, of Ohio, assisting in compiling the list of volunteer soldiers from Ohio to the late war, for publication. In 1881-82, he was book- keeper for a large firm in Cincinnati. Capt. Higgins is a member of the Odd Fellow and Masonic fraternities, and connected with Cincinnati Commandery, Knights Templars. He was married September 14, 1858, to M. B. M. Buckner, a native of Georgetown, and daughter of Philip J . Buckner, a prominent physician of Brown County. Mrs. Higgins mother was Sophia Hewitt, a native of Uniontown, Penn., born at the foot of the Laurel Hills." Eight children have been given Captain and Mrs. Higgins, six of whom survive-—- Henry B., Robert H., Laura B., M. Bessie. Beatrice and Sophia. Willie T. and Blanche are deceased. Mrs. Higgins is a member of the Presbyterian Church. She was educated at the Ohio Female College, of College Hill, and finished her studies at the Wesleyan Female College of Cincinnati, under the tuition of the eminent Prof. E. B. Wilbur.

HENRY B. HIGGINS, oldest child and son of Capt. Robert H. Higgins, was born in Georgetown August 30, 1859. He grew to manhood in his native village, and received a good education in its public schools. In 1875, he was appointed Deputy Clerk of the Court of Common Pleas by his father, and the latter’s successor, John Lafabre, retained him. In the spring of 1882, he was re-appointed by C. C. Blair, the present Clerk. Mr. Higgins is a promising young man, and an active member of the Democratic party. In April, 1882, he was elected Village Clerk, which position he also holds. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity .

    Inquiry
My father visited Emmetsburg with my older brothers and sister around 1930. His name was Patrick Higgins born in 1889 died 1979 He was a Chicago fireman. His father was James Higgins born in Headford. My father talked about his Uncle Pete and all the people like Genieve, Joe and Walter and Gerald who I could be named after. My brother Jack visited the Higgins' in 1948 on his honeymoon and in later years saw Walter in Chicago. Jack and Walter are both dead. We met Gerald Farrel and wife before his fatal car crash and also his brother the priest, a terrific man. My dad had 6 children, 33 grand and 51 great children. A man who spent 3 months in the county hospital with blood poisoning from stepping on a rusty nail at the age of 14. He was in World War One and worked into late 70's. My brother said on the way home from Emmetsburg he had to borrow $5 from his Uncle Pete who lived in Dubuque. He was frugal and tolerant and tough; not much for hugs but a good guy. Our family has been blessed and we appreciate our lives and thank God every day.

ISAAC N. HIGGINS, eldest son of Dr. and Mrs. J. M. Higgins, was born in Griggsville, Greene .County, Illinois, August 4th, 1834. He entered McKendree College in 1848, graduating in 1854 with a degree of A. M. He was fellow student with Wm. E. Hyde, Silas L. Bryan, Dr. W. F. Short, Hon. W. A. J. Sparks and Dr. J. R. M. Gaskill. After graduating from college, he studied medicine with his father, who was one of the most successful practitioners of his day, and afterwards graduated at Rush Medical College at Chicago. He seemed never to have a taste for this profession, however, and early abandoned all attempts at practice to engage in the newspaper business, for which his literary tastes and fine abilities eminently qualified him. In 1856 he embarked with his brother in the publication of the Pike County Union, a weekly paper, at Griggsville. In the course of a year or two this paper was removed to Pittsfield, the county-seat of Pike County, and its name changed to the Pike County Democrat. Its owners disposed of it in 1860, and I. N. Higgins went to Springfield and was for a short time city editor of the State Journal. He entered the War of the Rebellion as the first adjutant of Colonel Mather's regiment, the Second Illinois Light Artillery, serving also as war correspondent for the Chicago Times. In 1864 he became managing editor of the State Register. Severing his connection with the Register, he went to Chicago and engaged as an editorial writer on the Times, and later managing editor of the Chicago Republican, which afterwards became the Inter-Ocean. During a portion of his residence in Chicago he was also the agent for the Northwestern Associated Press. In 1870 he accepted a position as managing editor of the San Francisco Morning Call and held the place until his death, March 20th, 1885. Mr. Higgins had received all the degrees of the A. and A. Scottish Rite of Masons, including the thirty-second degree.

HISTORY OF DOUGLAS COUNTY, ILLINOIS TUSCOLA CITY AND TOWNSHIP. 1884. lists
-W. G. Higgins is Town Clerk
-James D. Higgins was first elected Town Clerk in April 1877, was re-elected the third time, and afterward gave place to his father, W. G. Higgins, who has retained the office ever since, the business being practically in the hands of the son, whose peculiar aptness for the duties of the office has been fully endorsed by the people.
- It is not the intention of this history to give a list of all the business houses of Tuscola, but an attempt is made to show how business started. Niles returned to the southeast corner of Main street and Central avenue, and then removed to J. M. Smith's building, corner of Avenue and Washington streets, and joined, as a partner, W. B. Dryer. They were finally succeeded by James D. Higgins, the present druggist on that corner.

Hon. John J Higgins resides in Du Quoin and is numbered among it prominent citizens. Mr. Higgins was born near Broomfield, County Cork, Ireland,November,21,1845. His father, John Higgins, died in 1848, leaving a widow and five sons, of whom our subject is the youngest. His mother bore the name of Johanna Moore; she was a woman of strong character, and when left a widow realized that her duty to her sons would be best fulfilled by bringing them to free America, rather than remaining in the land of their birth, a land at the time scourged by famine and crushed by bad government. In May,1849,with her children, sailed from Queenstown for America and landed in New York July 4. She remained a few months at
Nyack, on the Hudson River, and hen removed to Pittsfield Massachusetts. Here the eldest sons found employment and made for their mother a happy home, which she enjoyed until her death in 1869. John J. Higgins attended the public schools of Pittsfield until 1858,when he passed an examination and was admitted to the Pittsfield High School, where
he remained for one year. During this time he made rapid progress in his studies, and began a course in reading, which makes him one of the best informed men in our state. This result has been accomplished by reading study and experience. He possesses an observing and a retentive memory, and thereby his knowledge has constantly increased. One of the most prominent and highly educated citizens of the county, and a man of collegiate education, who is an orator and a polished and educated gentleman ,said to the historian: " I wish I was as good a scholar and as well informed as John Higgins". In 1859 our subject entered the employ of W. M. Root as an apprentice to learn the art of watch making and remained with his employer until 1866,when he came to Illinois and settled in Du Quoin. Here he established his business and enjoys the confidence and respect of the public. He is devoted to his calling ,is a thorough master of his art, and possesses on of the finest horological libraries in the west. In public affairs Mr. Higgins has always taken an active and intelligent interest, and his ability and worth was recognized by the Democrats of the forty-eighth senatorial district in 1882,when he was nominated and elected a member of the lower house of the Illinois legislature. He served his constituents faithfully and well, and in 1884 he received the Democratic nomination for Senator in the forty-eighth district. After a thorough canvass he defeated Mr. Thorn, his predecessor in office. Through the efforts of friends Mr. Higgins received in this contest the heaviest vote and the largest majority ever given in the district. His efforts while in office were directed almost entirely to restoring the business of the state to safe and economic methods. While in the Senate, with the cooperation of a few friends, Republicans and Democratic, he was largely instrumental in breaking up and exposing the public printing combine, which had been organized to plunder the state treasury. In this work alone about $60,000.00 dollars was saved to the people. As a public speaker has a wide reputation. In 1888 and 1892 the Democratic State Committee called upon him to canvass the Central and Northern parts of Illinois; his familiarity with the great questions of the day, intimate knowledge of, and close touch with the people and earnest and eloquent way of presenting his views, give him more than ordinary power as an orator. His friends are not all found in the ranks of Democracy, many Republicans admire and support him, and all that know him have the utmost confidence in his integrity and ability and speak of him only in terms of praise. In religious belief he is a Catholic. On October 15, 1872, Mr. Higgins wedded Miss Mary, daughter of Alva and Priscilla (Holmes) Ward, who emigrated to Illinois from Ohio, where their daughter was born. Four children grace the union of our subject and his wife; Mary, who is a pupil in St. Mary's Academy of Notre Dame, Indiana; Lawrence who is now in the Du Quoin High School; Kathleen and Florence who are in the public school.

-Nathan Miller Higgins -

In a history of the respectable men of Ford County who have contributed to its development and substantial progress and who through intelligently directed labor have achieved success, mention should be be made of Nathan Miller Higgins, who departed this life on 10th of March,1907. he was uniformly respected, not only because of the success he achieved but also by reason of the honorable, straightforward methods which he ever followed. His birth occurred in Huntington, Massachusetts, October 29,1845,and he was one of a family of twelve children, three of whom died in infancy or early childhood. He lost his father when about ten years of age, and was left an orphan by his mother's death when he was a youth of fifteen. he remained a resident of Massachusetts to the age of eighteen years, when he started for the midwest, settling at Fort Wayne, Indiana, where he was employed in a store for about two years, From there he went to St. Louis, Missouri, and in the fall of 1866, joined his brother Prentice at Elmwood, Illinois, and worked as a farm hand in his brothers employ until the fall of 1869. That date witnessed his arrival in Ford County. He investigated the farm property for sale and purchased one hundred and sixty acres of land, to which he removed the following spring, making his home thereafter in his county until he was called to his final rest. Later he added to the original tract until he became the owner of two hundred and forty acres on section 34,Brenton Township. He made all the improvements on the first tract but the eighty acre tract which he purchased was somewhat improved when it came into his possession. he regarded Real Estate as the safest of all investments and therefore placed his money in property. The home farm was brought under a high state of cultivation through his energy and diligence and as his financial resources increased he added to his property from time to time until he acquired three other farms in this vicinity, two of eighty acres and one of one hundred and sixty acres. He likewise invested in a half section of land in South Dakota and later an additional quarter section and thus from his property interest derived a gratifying income. He was also stockholder in and secretary treasurer of The Thawville Tile factory for a number of years. On the twelfth of March,1872, Mr. Higgins was married to Miss Mary Jane Mosher, who was near Fonda, New York, November 24,1849,and was brought to the middle west at he age of six years by her parents, Alexander and Elizabeth (McLaughlin) Mosher, who were natives of New York and on removing to Illinois settled at Elmwood. In 1877 they came to Ford County and took up their abode one mile south of the farm upon which Mrs. Higgins resides. There the death of the husband and father occurred, after which the other members of the family removed to Roberts. Unto Mr. and Mrs. Higgins were born six children; Mary Elizabeth, the wife of William Gardner of Fisher; Charles, living at home with his mother; Nathan Leroy, a resident of Chicago; Aleck Prentice, Effie Stella, and Milo Edwin, all at home. In his political views Mr. Higgins was a stalwart Republican and held some school offices but otherwise did not care for political preferment although he was loyal to the principles to which he believed. He was a man of domestic tastes, quiet and retiring in disposition, devoted to his family, his interest centering in his home. He was a self made man and owed his success to close application and unremitting diligence. He always rose very early to attend his business and story of his early rising became proverbial in the neighborhood. On one occasion several farmers of the neighborhood purchased nursery stock and it was delivered to Onarga, about eleven miles from Mr. Higgins' home. One of the neighbors, who has also been a purchaser of the stock, thought to himself, "I'll
get ahead of him once by going early to Onarga.I will draw the shades so that he may not see the light and will think i am still sleeping". He carried out his plan of rising early and when he got half way to Onarga met Mr. Higgins on his way home with the trees. He still persisted, however, that the joke was partly on Mr. Higgins because he had wandered two miles out of his way. In those early days there were no regularly laid out roads so it was not a difficult thing for the traveler to wander from the path. Mr. Higgins was never neglectful of duty but on the contrary did ably and well everything that he undertook and as the years passed he gained a gratifying amount of prosperity. With his wife he spent two winters in Florida and one in Texas for the benefit of his health but death claimed him on the 10th of march,1907,when he was in his sixty second tear. His life record is in many respects worthy of emulation as it indicates what may be accomplished when one has determination and energy. It was those qualities that made Mr. Higgins one of the respectable farmers of Brenton Township and Ford County, while the straightforward business principles which he advocated gained for him the respect of his fellowmen. He was always straightforward and just in his relations and, moreover, he had a kindly spirit, which was particularly manifest at his own fireside.

Jackson Higgins

JACKSON HIGGINS, of Brooklyn, Illinois, was born in Morgan county, Ohio, in 1832. His father, Daniel (Higgins), was born in Green county, Pennsylvania, January 20, 1807, and his father, Joseph (Higgins), was born near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and was engaged in farming. He was born in 1777, and died in 1840, marrying Polly Henderson, and raising a family of twelve children. He was drafted into the war of 1812, but sent a substitute. Daniel was married February 28, 1828, in Green county, Pennsylvania, to Sarah Brewer. They moved from there to Morgan county, Ohio, about 1830. In the fall of 1838, they came to Illinois with a small horse and wagon, bringing four small children, being twenty-six days on the road. There were six families in the party. The trip was a pleasant one, and the winter following was mild. They found the grass very tall, gone to seed, all kinds of game, and very recent marks of the buffalo remaining. Agues and fevers were universal.

Mr. Higgins is the oldest resident in this part of Schuyler county. He took up eighty acres of school lands, and soon obtained a deed, which he has held until he came to live with his son. He was a tailor by profession, having learned his trade in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, when a young man, having worked at it much of the time. In those early days the wives carded, spun and wove wool and flax, and Mr. Higgins in his trade, served the neighborhood well. His wife died, November, 1880, aged seventy-four years, leaving four living children, ten having been born. Mr. Higgins, in his eighty-sixth year, is bright and active.

Jackson has been a farmer all his life. He started on forty acres, and has from time to time added to it until his farm is now 227 acres, all fenced and more than one-half under the plow. There is some timber and large pasturage.

He was married in 1858, to Sarah, daughter of William and Polly (Fowler) Burnett of England, but who have been residents here for many years. They have two sons, William Harrison, married, residing on the home farm, and John R., married, and also on the farm. They are all Democrats and Methodists. Mr. Higgins has been Justice of the Peace for four years and has served the county as Road Commissioner.

- HIGGINS, Daniel M. —
The career of Daniel M. Higgins is an expression of well directed and intelligent industry, of devotion to the best interests of the community, and promotion of the best tenets of agriculture. His financial standing is indicated by the possession of about 1,120 acres of land in Illinois and Kansas, all of which had come to him through the exercise of thrift, good management and business sagacity. Mr. Higgins, whose home place consists of 240 acres in Section 25, Deerfield Township, is a native of Cass Township, Fulton County, where he was born October 25, 1852. He is the fourth in order of birth of seven sons and two daughters of Hiram and Elizabeth (Baughman) Higgins, the former of whom was born in Ohio in 1820, and the latter in Cass Township, this county, in 1828. Hiram Higgins came in a wagon from Ohio to Cass Township about 1844, where he was married in February of the same year, and soon after set up housekeeping in a log cabin on Section 32. He later bought land in this section and Section 29, in time owning a farm of 400 acres, the greater part of which was under cultivation. After his death, October 27, 1883, his widow remained on the homestead a couple of years, and then spent the balance of her life with her daughter, Mrs. Ellen Landis. Mr. Higgins was a public-spirited and enterprising pioneer, and eventually filled various offices of trust and responsibility.  Average opportunities accompanied Daniel M. Higgins to the threshold of his independent career. He early was taught to make his energies of value around the home farm, and was largely concerned with its management at the time of his marriage, in 1883, to Sarah E. Heller, a native of Deerfield Township, and born September 17, 1858. Mrs. Higgins is a daughter of John J. and Lydia (Zimmerman) Heller, natives of Ohio and Deerfield Township, respectively. Mr. and Mrs. Higgins are the parents of the following children: Hayward C., Charles Meredith, Boyd V., Gladys May and Audrey M. for the two years following his marriage Mr. Higgins lived on the home place, and then went to Missouri, where he experienced indifferent agricultural success for three years. Returning to Illinois with renewed appreciation of its advantages of soil and climate, he lived on the farm of his father for about four years, then purchased part of the place, which he sold two years later. He then became owner of his present home place of 240 acres, formerly the property of N. S. Johnson, in Section 25, and later bought eighty acres in Section 35, also 164 acres skirting the river, which latter property he disposed of in 1905. He also owns 800 acres of land in Kansas, and on all of his property is engaged in general farming and stock-raising, making a specialty of the latter occupation, however. While many improvements existed on his farms at the time of purchase, he has built and rebuilt extensively, and has kept pace with the advance in agriculture through the various mediums at the disposal of intelligent students of land culture. A Democrat in political affiliation, Mr. Higgins has avoided the thorny and uncertain ways of the office-seeker, contenting himself with the casting of an intelligent and well-thought-out vote. At the same time he is not unmindful of his duty in promoting clean and fair local government, and he has acceptably served as Tax Collector and Supervisor of Deerfield Township. Fraternally he is connected with the Modern Woodmen of America. A man of sterling general worth, he is respected by all with whom he is associated, and presents, in the variety and extent of his success, an example worthy of emulation by the youth of the rising generation.

Daniel M. Higgins. Although this gentleman is still quite a young man, he has become well-known as a successful farmer, who pursues the most approved methods in the management of his estate, keeping it above a par in its improved and orderly appearance, and making of it an attractive as well as remunerative piece of property. He is also held in good repute as an honest, upright man and citizen, who, although not a member of any religious organization, is a liberal contributor to the church and all good causes.

The parents of our subject, Hiram Higgins and Elizabeth Baughman, were married February 14, 1844, and took up their residence in Cass Township, this county. The mother had been born in that township December 10, 1828, and the father had opened his eyes to the light in Kentucky, March 4, 1820. They occupied a farm in the township mentioned until the death of the husband, October 27, 1883. The widow remained at the old home two years, then took up her residence with her daughter, Mrs. Ellen Landis, with whom she still makes her home.

Our subject was born October 25, 1852, being the fourth son in a family that included seven sons and two daughters. He received his education in the district schools of his native township, and resided under the parental roof until his marriage, which was solemnized December 20, 1883. He then established his own home on the homestead, remaining there until the 1st of March, 1889, when he took possession of his present place of abode.

The property purchased by Mr. Higgins consists of two hundred and forty acres on section 25, Deerfield Township, upon which the various improvements had been made that make it a desirable place of residence. The dwelling is a two-story brick structure, well built, and designed with a view to the comfort of the occupants, the main part being 18x36 feet, with an "L" of the same size. It contains eight large rooms with porches, etc., and has pleasant surroundings. The barn is 36x40 feet, with an immense shed attached 16x80 feet in size, affording adequate shelter for a large number of animals, and much fodder.

The charming woman who has the oversight over the home and household affairs, was formerly Miss Sarah E. Heller. She was born in Deerfield Township, September 17, 1858, to worthy parents who gave her a good education and home care. Her father, John J. Heller, was born in Ashland County, Ohio, and died March 29, 1879, at the age of forty-nine years. Her mother, Lydia (Zimmerman) Heller, who is still living, is a native of Deerfield Township. Mr. and Mrs. Higgins have three little sons: Howard C., born September 25, 1884; Charles M., June 6, 1886, and Boyd V., January 31, 1890.

Mr. Higgins takes no active part in political work other than to deposit a Democratic ballot upon election day. He evinces no desire for public office, but served satisfactorily as Collector in Cass Township. He is a member of South Fiatt Grange, No. 1644.

He was born in Ireland, March 22, 1848, son of John and Catherine (Flynn) Higgins, both natives of Ireland, where they carried on farming. Mr. Higgins had small educational advantages but made the most of his opportunities and received a fair education in the country schools of his native land. He worked on the farm with his father until 1874, then emigrated to the United States, and after spending a short time in Pittsburgh, Pa., and Rock Island, Ill., located in Springfield, where he lived the remainder of his life. He followed the trade of iron worker after coming to Springfield and was an expert in this line. He was industrious and energetic and accumulated considerable real estate. He never took an active part in politics, but was a Democrat all his life.
Mr. Higgins was married, in Springfield, January 25, 1878, to Miss Annie Hofferty, a native of Ireland, born January 1, 1856, daughter of Peter and Cecilia (Dwyer) Hofferty, both born in Ireland, where their entire lives were spent. They were farmers.
Several children were born to Mr. Higgins and his wife, of whom the following survive: John B., stationary engineer for the Springfield Water Works, is married and lives at 1513 East Jefferson Street, Springfield; Peter F., unmarried, living at home with his mother; George W. and Charles V., yard masters for the Chicago, Peoria and St. Louis Railroad Company, at Springfield; Thomas J., a railroad machinist; Katie J. and Cecilia E., attending school and living at home with their mother. LANCASTER-(old) CEMETERY, Lancaster Precinct, Wabash County, IL
http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ifetch2?/u1/data/il+index+7985142901660+F

America's Bicentennial years are spanned by the lifetimes of those who comprise the "community" of an old cemetery. Here in Old Lancaster Cemetery repose at least eleven persons who were born before 1800; there probably are others in unmarked graves. The earliest-born in Lancaster Cemetery are Betsey Higgins and her husband John Higgins. She was born Apr. 23, 1777 and he on Oct. 23, 1778, during the time of the Revolutionary War. If Betsey Higgins could tell her story, she might relate it thus: "John (Higgins) was a ship carpenter back East, and we were doing well. But after his brother Willis (Higgins) went out West to Illinois Territory in 1812, we had wonderful reports from him of this new country with plentiful game and good timberland. They said Illinois was going to become a state soon. So in 1816 we made the long trip by boat, with John's parents (George W. and Prentice Higgins) and his brothers William and Ransom, and his sisters. Seven or eight other families, friends of ours, came to Illinois too. John and I and our six children: William, George, John, Delia, Betsey, and our own family boat was in the lead. What a journey that was, and one which I'll never forget! We settled at Mier (Lancaster's early name), and John built the first log house here in 1817. He and John Keracher were the early proprietors of our town. John's parents and brothers settled in Friendsville where there was a fort for protection from the Indians. Life wasn't easy and we lost our little daughter Betsey that first year. Sometimes I got so homesick. But all in all, it was a good life, and our children liked it here. They're grown now and have families of their own."

Betsey Higgins died Sept. 25, 1847 at the age of 70 years, 4 months, and 27 days.  Her husband died in 1852. Their tombstones, two thin white limestone slabs, are characteristic of the simple dignity which was the hallmark of their day. The many descendants of the Higgins family in this area today include the allied lines of Berninger, McJilton, Crum, Hershey, Biehl, Seibert, Smith, Leighty, Staninger, Greathouse and many others.
