HORRIBLE DEATH OF J. E. HIGGINS.
A most horrible occurrence took place in Anderson on the night of
September 28rd, 1893, in which J. E. Higgins was burned to death. He
was a roomer in the residence of Mrs. Elizabeth Pratt on West Eighth
street, while his wife was away visiting friends. In some manner the
house caught fire in the room where he was sleeping, and was
destroyed, burning Mr. Higgins into a crisp. It is supposed he was
reading by a light and perhaps had been smoking and had fallen
asleep and the bed clothing took fire.
Mr. Higgins was a man of excellent habits, a salesman in the Lion
Store, and well liked by all who knew him.
Mrs. Pratt, who owned the property, was the widow of the late Asa
Pratt. Esq. The property was fully insured.

WILLYS AND VIRGINIA HIGGINS PAPERS, 1918-1920
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
When World War I caught up to Willys (1889-c.1975) and Virginia (?-1954) Higgins, they were a young couple
recently moved from Chicago to Toledo, Ohio. Originally from Sharon, Pennsylvania, Willys was
christened Wyllys Albert Manley Higgins (he later changed the "y" to an
"i" and dropped "Manley") and
was the eldest of four children. Virginia Wagner Higgins, often referred to as
"Dollie" in the letters, was born in Frederick, Maryland, but raised in Chevy
Chase. She was several years Willys' elder and rather frail throughout her married life.
Willys was working for Simmons Hardware Company in Toledo in June 1918 when he was drafted and sent to
Camp Sherman at Chillocothe, Ohio. He remained there for two months before proceeding on to Camp Mills on
Long Island to await overseas duty. He spent the time before the Armistice in
Razac, France, and in parts of
Belgium, Luxemburg, and Germany. Originally a member of the First Division of the American Expeditionary
Forces, he later transferred to the 84th. According to his own account, he took a "modest part" as member of
the 84th in the battles of Argonne Forest (6 November 1918) and Sedan (7 November) and visited the scene of
the 1918 Battle of Verdun. After the Armistice, he remained in Germany as part of the occupation forces,
serving as company clerk until late July 1919. He returned home after a short stint at an American base
sometime in mid-August 1919. Virginia passed the year in her home on Wayne Street in Toledo, except for an
occasional visit to her mother and sister. Evidently, she had little or no income outside of her husband's
army allotment and had a difficult time economically.
After the war, Willys and a friend operated another hardware store until 1929, when the depression forced
Willys out of business. During the following years, he held several different jobs in Chicago and in Indiana.
Virginia died in 1954, and Willys remained single until he married
Mary B. Higgins of Fort Wayne, Indiana, in 1957. He resided in Fort Wayne with her
until his death at the age of 86.

Earl Higgins, V. S. One of the successful young professional
men of Harrison Township, Wells County, is Dr. Earl Higgins, a
graduate veterinarian, and a popular young man of this section.
Doctor Higgins was the eldest of his parents' family and was born
December 16, 1887, a son of Chads and Ida (Cobburn)
Higgins. He spent his boyhood days on the home farm and attended
the public schools. For some years he engaged in farming, and in
handling cattle and stock discovered that he was so much interested
in dumb creatures that he concluded to make a study of their medical
and surgical needs. In recent years his profession has been advanced
to one of equal dignity and necessity and a long course of study and
training was involved before he was most creditably graduated in
April, 1917, from the Indiana Veterinary College, Indianapolis,
Indiana.
Doctor Higgins was married to Miss Pearl Ditzler, who is a
daughter of John R. and Catherine (Brickley) Ditzler,
and they have had three children: Hermennia. who is eight
years old; Catherine, who is six years; and Lucile,
who died in 1917. In politics, Doctor Higgins is a democrat.

JOHN HIGGINS The subject of this sketch was born near Connersville, Indiana, September 10, 1814. His
parents' names were Jonathan and Margaret Higgins; her name was
Margaret Shaw. Mr. Higgins was married at Thorntown, Indiana, December 23, 1839. Mrs. Higgins
died September 10, 1880, and is buried in what is known as Bethel Cemetery, in Washington Township. Mrs.
Higgins ( Nancy Long) was born March 6, 1821. This interesting family was among the first to settle in
that part of Washington Township. Mr. Higgins at once took a great interest in his new home, and with his
hands made one of the best farms in the county. And he is one of the best farmers in his township. He has
served as Township Trustee, in all, near nineteen years. Was elected joint representative for the
counties of Boone and Clinton in 1868, over Hon. Henery M. Marvin, which will give us an idea of his
popularity. In person Mr. Higgins is large, fair complexion, light hair and good features. He belongs
to the Presbyterian Church. In politics, a republican.
The following are his children's names: Mary married to William
Adair, died May 19, 1864; Phebe J., died at the age of six years;
Arminta B., married to Dr T. H. Harrison, resides in Lebanon, Indiana;
Ollie married to Walter S. Hall, resides on home farm. In the proper
place we omitted to say Mr. Higgins served as County Commissioner; first appointed to serve out the
unexpected term of Newton Phillips; afterwards being elected. When canvassing for this work we were kindly
cared for at his house by him and Mr. And Mrs. Hall.

HENRY D. HIGG1NS
South Bend and the men who have made it.
Compiled by Anderson & Cooley ,SOUTH
BEND: THE TRIBUNE PRINTING CO. 1901.
No man was ever more warmly
endeared to this community, nor occupied a higher
place in the respect of our people than the late Henry D. Higgins, whose death occurred in this city
February 11, 1895. His many kindly acts are still fresh in the minds of those who knew him while he lived,
and who were ever proud to be numbered among his friends. Mr. Higgins was a native of New York state and
was born on a farm on Onondaga County, near the City of Syracuse, March 15, 1822. His father, William Higgins,
was a native of Connecticut, and came of an eminent English family, whose sons came to America In the early
Colonial days, and settled in New England.
His grand father, Darius Higgins, settled at New Haven, Conn., and was a patriot in the Revolutionary war.
His father William Higgins served in the war of 1812. His mother was Hannah Willard. Mr. Henry D. Higgins
received his education in the public schools, and learned the trade of carpenter. Mr. Higgins went to Oswego.N.Y.,
and in 1846 was married to Miss Nancy Barnes, and two weeks after his marriage came to Mishawaka, where
he was engaged for a time at the painting business. He gave this up and opened the first jewelry store in Mishawaka
and continued in that line until his lamented death. Mr. Higgins was widely known and highly esteemed as an active
and honorable business man and a public spirited citizen. Mrs. Higgins died in 1892. To. Mr. and Mrs. Higgins were
born four children, Charles, the eldest who died in 1873, Sarah, who married Joseph DeLorenzi, and who succeeded
Mr. Higgins in the jewelry business, Alice, who died when a child, and Susie, the youngest, is the wife of
Mr. Martin V. Beiger, the founder and president of the Mishawaka Woolen Company. Mr. Higgins left an enduring
memory of his many admirable traits and strong business attributes and the world is the better for his having lived.

HIGGINS, Mary, The Paoli Weekly News (December 24, 1879)
On Thursday (Dec 18, 1879) last Mrs. Mary Higgins, wife of Robert Higgins of Orangeville, died of some
kind of dropsical affliction. Sometime ago Mrs. Higgins paid a visit to her son,
Payton, in Missouri and while on this visit the disease which was the
cause of her death seized upon her, and in spite of all the medical aid it retained its hold and carried
her off. Mrs. Higgins was a much loved wife, mother and friend. She leaves a husband and three children,
as well as many friends, to mourn her death. They have our heartfelt
sympathy.

Springs Valley Herald (March 19, 1925) West Baden News
Lon Higgins, one of the pioneer citizens, who retired from the farm and has been living at Prospect for some
time, has been in very poor health for some time and departed this life last Monday night. For some weeks
he has been afflicted with a severe case of blood poisoning. Mr. Higgins is one of the oldest members of
the fraternity of Odd Fellows in the Sate, having become a member of that order when a young man. He is
the father of two children, Harry Higgins, living in Indianapolis and Mrs.
Maude Wilson, wife of Thomas Wilson of this place. He has many friends who will
regret to learn of his death. The funeral took place Wednesday at Ames Chapel.
...
Springs Valley Herald (March 26, 1925) Obituary Alonzo Higgins, son of
Robert and Mary Ann Higgins, was born near Orangeville, Orange County, Indiana May
19th, 1847. His ancestry were among the first settlers of Orange County. Jacob
Shirley, his grandfather, came from Virginia and settled in Orange County, near the
rise of the Lost River, about one hundred years ago. In a few years the little town of Orangeville sprang
up. Near this little town Alonzo was born. He grew to mature manhood. He, with many other young people attended school at
Orangeville and were highly favored by having Miss Mary Hardesty, afterwards Mrs. Doctor Carter as their
teacher, who for many years taught school in Orangeville. The church and school surrounding this
little village was the center of the social life. The noble ancestry of that day, gave to their children
a rich heritage. The moral atmosphere of the community helped to lay the foundation for an honest upright
citizenship. The Higgens family were known far and near for their generosity and hospitality,
consequently Alonzo grew to manhood loved and respected by all the community.
When 22 years old he was appointed Deputy Sheriff of Orange County. While residing in Paoli he joined the
I.O.O.F., afterwards transferred his membership to Orangeville Lodge, No. 113, and for more than 55 years he was an
active, honored member of this Brotherhood. He delighted in its fellowship and work of mercy and help
and for more than a half century exemplified the principles of FRIENDSHIP, LOVE and TRUTH.
In early life he united with the M. E. Church at Orangeville. After his marriage he moved his
membership to Ames Chapel. He was married to Miss Lydia Porter, December 25,
1874. To this union was born two children, Harry and Maude. For many years Brother Higgins was in poor
health. When he sold his farm where he had lived for more than 45 years he moved to the little town of
Prospect and from this quiet home, he went away, never more to return, at 9 p.m. Monday evening, March 16.
There was an alarm at the door of the Grand Lodge on high. The Noble Grand said swing wide the gate and let
him in. His seat will be vacant in his lodge and home and the community has lost a highly respected citizen. A
Brother beloved who has been identified with Orange County history for almost four score years has taken
his departure at the age of 77 years, 10 months and 3 days.
He leaves the wife of his youth, his son Harry of Indianapolis, his daughter, Mrs.
Maude Wilson of West Baden, also an only sister, Mrs. Sarah Pipher of
Oklahoma and many friends to mourn their loss. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. N. F. Denny,
Wednesday, March 18th, at Ames Chapel at 2 p.m. At the grace Brother L.P. Brown, a life long friend of the
deceased, paid a beautiful tribute of respect, to his intimate friend and brother, after which the
I.O.O.F. Order paid their last tribute of respect to a departed brother. Brother L.P. Brown, now the senior member of
Orange Lodge No. 113, officiating.
CARD OF THANKS
We wish to express our thanks to our many friends for their acts of kindness during the illness and the for
sympathy in the passing of our dear husband and father. Your kindness and sympathy beautifully
exemplified a spirit of tender respect for the aged. Words fail to express our deep appreciation. Mrs.
Lydia Higgins, Harry E P Higgins, F. Maude
Wilson.

DANIEL H HIGGINS, a prominent citizen of Orangeville Township, is a native of Washington County, Tenn.,
where he was born March 19, 1823, being the third of eight children born to
William and Nancy (Harrison) Higgins. His parents were natives of Rockingham
County, Va., his father of German, his mother of Scotch descent, and came to this State and county from
Tennessee about 1831. Our immediate subject remained at home and assisted his parents on the farm until he
attained the age of twenty-three years. He received a very limited education in the primitive log
schoolhouses of his day. June 14, 1846, his marriage with Jane (Shirley) Hudelson was solemnized, and to
their union one child was born--Eliza--who was united in marriage to
Marion Critchfield. Our subject's occupation has always been farming, and he has been
quite successful in that pursuit and now owns 320 acres of well improved land; he also raises considerable
stock. November 27, 1878, Mr. Higgins lost his wife. He is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church at
Orangeville, and is a liberal supporter of that institution. He is also a member of the Odd Fellows'
Fraternity. His political views are Democratic; he is one of the best farmers in this part of the county.
