Image of John Higgins

John A. Higgins was born in Saratoga County, N. Y., June 9th, 1857, coming to Manistee in 1872, the summer succeeding the great fire. Where the Court house now stands there was only a grim waste of blackened hemlock stubs.

The boy of fifteen shouldered a pack almost immediately upon his arrival, accompanying Edward McLaughlin, a land looker, into the lumber woods, these trips often lasting for three months.

He clerked for Seymour Bros, for some time, afterwards clerking for Geo. M. Kanouse in the old City Hotel and when the Dunham House was opened by Mr. Kanouse, Mr. Higgins became its first clerk. In the Fall of 1888 he ran the first passenger train over the Manistee & Northeastern R, R., the line at that time terminating at Bear Creek.

He was with the Railroad Company eighteen years, resigning December 15th, 1906, after having been elected Sheriff of Manistee County. At this time he was tendered a banquet by the officials of the road and his fellow employees, being presented with a very handsome token of the esteem in which he was held by them.

Mr. Higgins has proven a very capable Sheriff, and upon his retirement from that office at the close of the present year will carry with him the best wishes of his many friends and constituents.

John A. Higgins.— Although a native of the Empire state, thirty eight years of residence in Manistee have made John A. Higgins, former sheriff and for many years connected with the Manistee & Northeastern Railroad, one of those who are very loyal to the interests of this part of the state. Pew citizens of Manistee are better known and he is held in general high esteem for he has ever cheerfully given his support to those enterprises that tend to public development and, with hardly an exception he has been connected with every interest that has promoted public welfare. He is a stalwart Republican, having long been at the forefront in local party affairs.

Mr. Higgins was born in Saratoga county, New York, June 9, 1857, and in his veins unite the English and Irish elements, his father and mother having been natives of England and Ireland, respectively. When a young man of twenty-one, the former became attracted with the idea of American independence and opportunity and crossed the Atlantic to claim his share of the same, and it came about that he located in the state of New York, where he remained until his death at the age of fifty-six years. William Higgins, for such was the name of the father, was a farmer by occupation. The mother, whose maiden name was Ann Ross, was reared in her native Erin. When Mr. Higgins was but five years of age he had the misfortune to lose his mother, there being five children in the family, and two of them younger than himself.

Mr. Higgins is one of the army of self-made men, for he started out for himself at the age of thirteen years. The family resources were low and as everyone knows, there is no arguing with necessity. When he was fifteen his wanderings brought him to Manistee, which, although he may have believed it to be merely an episode at the time, was in reality a most important thing, for it was to determine his location for the next forty years. His arrival was not at an auspicious moment, for it was in the summer succeeding the great fire, and where the court house now stands there was only a grim waste of blackened hemlock stubs. He spent the fall and winter in the woods, almost immediately shouldering a pack and accompanying Edward McLaughlin, a land looker, into the lumber woods, these trips often lasting for three months. The energetic young fellow then secured a clerkship with Seymour Brothers, and following that he became clerk for George M. Kanouse in the
old City Hotel and when the Dunham House was opened by Mr. Kanouse, Mr. Higgins, who had earned the confidence of his employer, was given the position of first clerk. From the fall of 1888 dates Mr. Higgins' first identification with the railroad business, when the Manistee & Northeastern Railroad was built, it being he who ran its first passenger train over the road, the line at that time terminating at Bear Creek. He was with the railroad company for eighteen years and made a splendid record. He served in the capacity of conductor and ever manifested that loyalty to duty which is to be discerned in all his relations. He resigned December 15, 1906, after having been elected sheriff of Manistee county, and at the time he was tendered a banquet by the officials of the road and his fellow employees, being presented with a very handsome token of the esteem in which he was held by them.

As previously mentioned Mr. Higgins is one of the most enthusiastic and active of Republicans, devoted to the policies and principles for which the Grand Old Party stands sponsor and ever ready to go anywhere, to do anything for the good of the party. In the capacity of sheriff he gave service of a high character. In 1910 he was delegate to the State Convention held in the city of Detroit.

In 1880, Mr. Higgins laid the foundation of a happy home life, the lady to become his wife being Miss Nellie Barry, daughter of David and Teresa Barry of Cheboygan, Wisconsin. Their union has been cemented by the birth of six children, namely: Raymond, William, Ray. Emeline, Frank and Barry .

Mr. Higgins is popular in lodge circles. His affiliations extend to the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, to the Knights of Pythias, Brotherhood of Railway Conductors and to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows,

Few railroad conductors in Northern Michigan are better and more favorably known, his eighteen years' continuous service having been of the most satisfactory character. His courtesy, geniality, and other line qualities, will not allow him soon to be forgotten by the patrons of the Manistee & Northeastern Railroad.

WALTER A. HIGGINS.
One of the most beautiful farms in Jackson County, is that owned and occupied by the gentleman above named, and comprising one hundred and | fifty-three acres on section 21, Blackman Township. He has lived on his present estate over twenty years and in that time has brought it to a high degree of perfection both as regards its cultivation and the improvements with which it is adorned. Among the latter is a fine set of barns and a tasteful dwelling whose external appearance but slightly indicates the pleasantness of its interior appointments which are under the care of a model housekeeper. Mr. Higgins is a lover of fine horses, is an extensive breeder of equines, and takes great interest in everything pertaining to the improvement and care of that stock.

Before outlining briefly the life of the gentleman above named a few words regarding his parents will not be amiss. They were Jirah A. and Almira (Symonds) Higgins, both natives of Connecticut, who were married in Wyoming County, N. Y. and settled in the town of Perry, where they lived about two years. They then spent a short time in Ohio and returning to Wyoming County again made that their home, removing thence in 1844 and taking up their residence in Brooklyn, this county. Since that time they have spent nine years in Lenawee County and two in Indiana, the remainder of the time from their emigration to this State has been spent in this county. The mother is still living, but the father died in Jackson in April. 1878.

Walter Higgins was born in Conneaut, Ohio, September 11, 1835, and came to Michigan when about nine years old, growing to manhood in this county, where he spent the greater number of his years since boyhood. He was reared on a farm and has always been engaged in the pursuit of agriculture. He was with his parents two years in Indiana and about nine years in Lenawee County, this State, close to the Jackson County line, and in that county, March 18, 1863, he became the husband of Miss Mattie A. Bates. After his marriage he continued to live with his father some seven years, subsequently settling on the Alonzo Bennett farm, west of Jackson, and four years later locating on the section where he now lives.

The parents of Mrs. Higgins, the late Joseph and Maty A. (Eaton) Bates, were natives of New York, in which State they were married and began their wedded life, and in which Mr. Bates died. The widow afterward came to Michigan, her removal being made about the year 1857, and her choice of a location being Jackson County. She died near Brooklyn in 1869, having reared six children, of whom Mrs. Higgins is the fourth. This lady was born near Syracuse, N. Y., March 23, 1842, being about fifteen years old when she came with her mother to Michigan, where she grew to womanhood. She possesses intelligence of a high order, noble traits of character and an open-hearted spirit, and altogether is one of those fine types of womanhood born to warn, to comfort, to command," who are alt too few in this world of ours, but who, once seen, are ever remembered as examples of what human nature is capable of. To Mr. and Mrs. Higgins two children have been born: Metta C, and
Harry A; the daughter is the wife of John S. Hutchinson of Jackson.

Mr. Higgins is a Democrat of the staunchest sort. Interested in the welfare and progress of his party, although not personally an office seeker. He takes great interest in the schools and in other enterprises which conduce to the higher civilization and welfare of the community. He is hospitable and whole-souled, and his success in life has been such that he is enabled to gratify his tastes, while the housewifely skill of his wife gives him no fear I should an unexpected guest cross the threshold. The affairs of the home are sowed conducted as to ; afford pleasure to all who enter there, displaying as I it does the taste of a cultured woman whose ready j wit and bright intelligence are prime factors in the | entertainment of guests.

HON. THOMAS T. HIGGINS,

For many years Hon. Thomas T. Higgins has been regarded as a representative and prosperous farmer of Cass county, and at the present time he is making a notable record as a member of the general assembly, being now for the second term representative from his district in the Michigan legislature. To the energetic natures and strong mentality of such men is due the success and ever increasing prosperity of the Republican party, in this state and in the hands of this class of citizens there is every assurance that the best interests and welfare of the party will be attended to, resulting in a successful culmination of the highest ambitions and expectations entertained by its adherents. Throughout his life Mr. Higgins has been a loyal citizen, imbued with patriotism and fearless in defense of his honest convictions, and he is now advocating in legislative halls and before the people the principles which he believes will best advance the welfare of the commonwealth. Such is the man whose life history forms the theme of this article. He makes his home on section 17, Jefferson township, and when not engaged with the weighty duties of his office his time and energies are concentrated upon the successful conduct of what is one of the best improved farms in Cass county.

Mr. Higgins was born in Randolph county, Indiana, on the 10th of February, 1844, and is of Irish lineage, the family having been founded in America early in the eighteenth century. The name Higgins was known in the old Emerald Isle as Higginson, but now is known as Higgins. The representatives of the name in America are descended from Thomas Higgins, an early settler of Delaware, and the family has furnished to various states prominent representatives, who have held important public positions. This number includes Governor Higgins, of New York, who is a second cousin of the subject of this review. His paternal grandfather, Joseph Higgins, was a native of Ireland. His father, James T. Higgins, was born in Wilmington, Delaware, at the old home of the family in 1807, and there spent the days of his boyhood and youth, while in the public schools he acquired his education. In 1829, when a young man of twenty-two years, President Andrew Jackson gave him charge
of the mail route from New Castle to Fort Delaware. While still a young man he assumed the work of grading the first interurban railroad in the country, from New Castle to Chesapeake Bay, working under Joseph Cannon. Much of his life, however, was devoted to agricultural pursuits. He was married in the east but at an early day the spirit of the pioneer led him to the wilds of Indiana, and for some time he resided in Randolph county, whence in 1858 he came to Cass county, Michigan, settling in LaGrange township, where he purchased a tract of land and improved a farm. He voted for McClellan in 1864, but early gave his political support to the Republican party. However, he cast his ballot for Fremont, its first presidential candidate, and for Lincoln in i860. He wedded Miss Mary Higgins, who was a native of New Jersey and was descended from the same ancestry. She lived to be fifty-nine years of age, while James T. Higgins, the father, reached the very venerable age of ninety-one years. In their family were eight children, three sons and five daughters, all of whom grew to manhood or womanhood, but only three are now living: Thomas T., of this review; George; and Mary, the wife of William Hass, of LaGrange township.

Hon. Thomas T. Higgins was the eldest son and fifth child in his father's family. He was reared in Richmond, Wayne county, and in Randolph county, Indiana, and was a youth of sixteen years when he came with his parents to Cass county, Michigan. His early education had been acquired in the schools of Richmond, and he afterward continued his studies in w7hat is known as the Mechanicsburg school in LaGrange township. He has largely been dependent upon his own resources from the age of sixteen years and his inherent force of character, his utilization of opportunity and his unremitting diligence in everything that he has undertaken have constituted the basis of his success. When about twenty-one years of age he went south and was employed as government teamster for about three months. This was at the close of the war. He then returned to Cass county, where he began farming on his own account and throughout his active business career he has carried on general
agricultural pursuits.

In 1867 Mr. Higgins was united in marriage to Miss Caroline Rathbum, a daughter of Lucius and Sarah (Click) Rathbum and a native of Jefferson township, her people having located in Jefferson township, Cass county, at a very early day. Mr. Higgins lived upon his father's farm for a time and afterward upon his father-in-law's property, but in 1869 took up his abode upon the farm on which he now resides on section 17, Jefferson township. At that time only twenty acres of land had been cleared and cultivated. He at once, however, continued the work of development, placed. the greater part of the land under the plow and has put all of the improvements upon the property, which is now a splendidly cultivated farm, comprising two hundred acres of rich and arable land, from which he annually harvests large crops. His first home was a log cabin, but this has long since been replaced by a more commodious and substantial modern residence. In all of his farm work he is energetic and painstaking. He thoroughly understands his business, and in fact thoroughness is one of his marked characteristics, manifest in all that he has undertaken in every relation of life. He is also thoroughly reliable in his business transactions, his name being a synonym for integrity and straightforward dealing.

Unto Mr. and Mrs. Higgins have been born five children: J. P., who is now living in Dowagiac, wedded Miss Mabel Palmer and is engaged in real estate; Florence, who is the wife of Fred Shurter, a resident farmer of Jefferson township; Claude, who was a mail carrier on a rural route, but now an agriculturist; he wedded Leona Gifford; Leila, the wife of Fred Whitmore, also living in Jefferson township; and Elsie, the wife of Henry AtLee, of the state of Washington.

In April, 1871, Mr. Higgins was made a Mason and is one of the oldest representatives of Cassopolis lodge. He also belongs to the Chapter at Cassopolis and is a prominent representative of the fraternity here. In politics he has always been a stanch Republican, taking an "active interest in the local work of the party and doing everything in his power to insure its success. He has held various local offices, but still higher political honors awaited him, for in 1903 he was chosen to represent his district in the state legislature by a vote of two hundred and fifty-two. He proved an active working member of the house and that his constituents regarded favorably his efforts in their behalf is shown by the fact that in 1905 he was re-elected by a largely increased majority of nine hundred. He has delivered various campaign speeches and is a forceful, earnest speaker, and is today accounted one of the prominent representatives of the party in the county. He has also left the impress of his individuality upon state legislation. He has never pretended to be an orator and the members of the house who at first were not inclined to pay much attention to the speeches of the farmer representative soon found out that they had to cope with a force on which they had little reckoned. His earnestness and his honesty were not alone his strong characteristics, although these traits are most commendable. His fellow members found, too, that he had been a student of the questions and issues of the day and that he had a keen and shrewd insight into matters which came up for discussion. A publication of recent date said: "He is always steady and honest and when he set himself the other day to oppose the attorney general s bill to allow the institution in Ingham county of state cases against parties ^f *dl sections of the state he won a victory. The house voted the bill down. His speech on that occasion is regarded as his best address to the legislature." Mr. Higgins also won wide attention by a plan for the solution of the primary reform problem and his suggestion won approval from both wings in the reform fight. In regard to this measure the reporter for the work of the house, H. M. Nimmoy said: "Representative Higgins of Cass has come forward with a solution of the primary reform muddle that has already found favor with several of the opponents of direct nominations, including Governor Warner. His compromise proposition is this: Retain the state conventions to name candidates to be placed on the party ballots and give the people a chance to choose the nominee by direct vote from among the candidates for state offices so endorsed. Higgins has also accepted the suggestion that each candidate be endorsed by at least twenty-five per cent of the delegates of the state convention before his name can go on the ballot. His measure has received the endorsement of many men prominent in the ranks of the Republican party, including Governor Warner, Chairman Stone of the house elections committee, banking commissioner Moore and others." As stated, Mr. Higgins has made himself felt as a forceful factor in the affairs of the commonwealth, and that he has won the confidence and support of his fellow citizens is indicated by the fact of his largely increased majority at his second election. His career has been one of activity, full of incidents and results, and by his excellent public service and upright life he has honored the community that has honored him with official preferment.

George Higgins, proprietor of the Sanford House at Sanford, was born Aug. 24, 1839, in Canada, and is the son of John and Josette (Scheler) Higgins. His father died in Springfield, Can.
Mr. Higgins began his contest with the world when he was 11 years old. He has a natural aptitude for the use of tools and early in life learned the business of boiler-making and blacksmithing. He went from the Dominion to the State of New York and came thence to Saginaw, Mich., about the first of March, 1865. He first found employment in a brick-yard, where he continued five months. His next remove was to Tittabawassee, where he operated between three and four years. He went thence to the city of Saginaw and engaged in keeping a boarding saloon. Eight months later he bought a hotel at Edenville, Midland County. He continued its management between two and three years, when the property was destroyed by fire. The entire loss was between four and five thousand dollars. He held an insurance policy of $2,500, on which he realized $2,000. He then came to Sanford and established himself in the business of hotel-keeping in a frame house on the bank of the river. It was situated on the flat and was subject to the interesting vicissitudes common to high water in this section of Michigan. The lower floor was frequently flooded and business suffered accordingly. In 1875 he bought his present location of Charles Sanford, and moved his effects hither in a scow. On his return the following day, he found the water waist deep in the lower story of the house he had left. May 15, 1884, he was again visited by the destroying element, fire, and his hotel was burned to the ground, together with a portion of the furniture. It was insured for $2,500, and the furniture was insured for $500. At the present writing he is rebuilding.
Mr. Higgins owns a farm of 187 acres of land on section 24, of Jerome Township, with 27 acres improved. He also owns six town lots in Sanford. He has officiated six terms as Highway Commissioner and as Deputy Sheriff eight years.
He was married Aug. 16, 1861, to Elizabeth A.' daughter of William Henry and Helen (Hilliard) O'Connell. Her father was born Aug. 15, 1781, in Limerick. Ireland, and died Feb. 5, 1873, in Hamilton, Can. The mother was born June 8, 1796, in the city of Dublin, and died Oct. 20, 1873, in the same place where the demise of her husband occurred. Mrs. Higgins was born in Toronto, Can., Oct. 28, 1838. Following is the record of the children born to Mr. and Mrs. Higgins: Henry A. was born Nov. 2, 1863, in Springfield, Can., and was married March 14, 1883, at Eden ville, to Hattie J. Stratton. The marriage ceremony was performed by Daniel Grover, J. P. George T., the child of this marriage, was born April 7, 1884. Helen J. Higgins was born Aug. 10, 1864, at Georgetown, Can., and was married Aug. 8, 1883, to W. A. Ryan at Sanford, by J. A. Sprague, Presiding Elder at Big Rapids. Anna Belle Higgins. was born Aug. 13, 1871, at Edenville, Mich. Albert Higgins was born Aug. 3, 1873, at Sanford.

Source: A Twentieth Century History of Allegan County,
Michigan By Henry Franklin Thommas  (Published 1907 Lewis Publishing Co)

WILLARD HIGGINS
, owning a farm of one hundred and twenty acres on sections one and thirty-two in Otsego township, where he conducts a mill, is one of the oldest settlers of Allegan county, dating his residence here since the fall of 1835, covering a period of more than seventy years. He is the next oldest settler in the county, Chauncey Scott, son of Giles Scott, alone being older. He was born on a farm in Amity township, Allegany county, New York, October 9, 1823, and represents one of the old families of the east, who originated from England but comes of Irish descent.

His father, Jabin Strong Higgins, was born in
the eastern part of New York, March 9, 1799, and was
there reared and married Miss Betsey Aldrich, who was
born near Cooperstown, New York, in 1801. The father
conducted a sawmill in his native state, and in 1834
removed with his family to Michigan, making the
overland journey, which required twenty one days, the
family home being established in Kalamazoo county, the
date of their arrival being October 2nd. The father
followed farming in Comstock township, where he made
his home until March, 1836, when he moved the family
to Allegan county. He and a brother had already in
1835 built the sawmill on Pine Creek above mentioned.
When the family arrived here the town of Otsego
contained but three houses. He was connected with
building operations, erecting a house, which he
conducted as a hotel for some time, this being the
first regular hostelry in the village, Dr. Foster's
place not being a public place in the strict sense. He
and his brother Gilbert likewise built what are now
known as the Leighton Mills, a mile east of where Mr.
Higgins now resides, and for many years he was
connected with milling and farming interests in this
county. In the family of this pioneer couple were
eleven children, ten of whom reached mature years,
while one died when four years of age. Beside Willard
there are three sons—Marvin G., Zenas A. and Orlin,
the first and last named making their home in Otsego
township, while one daughter, Mrs. Harriet Steel,
resides in Plainwell. One son of the family, Hugh,
served in the Civil war, enlisting in Minnesota, and
his death occurred in Plainwell.

which includes census information on Hugh and his family)

The mother of this family passed away in Allegan
county about 1877, at the age of seventy-six years,
while the father spent the last five years of his life
with his son, Willard, and died in November, 1881.
Thus passed away one of the worthy pioneer couples of
this portion of the state, who had aided in much of
the development and progress of their home locality.
Willard Higgins was a little lad of eleven years when
he accompanied his parents on their removal from New
York to this state, and he still has vivid
recollections of many incidents connected with the
long and tedious journey. He was reared to farm life,
assisting his father in the duties of the fields, and
at the early age of twelve years he was employed at
farm labor by others for ten dollars per month. He
likewise learned the milling business from his father
and has been connected with this industry to a greater
or less extent throughout his entire life. He spent
the period of his boyhood and youth on the home farm
and there remained until he reached the age of
twenty-five years, being employed the greater portion
of the time by his father. He then began work on his
own account by renting the Forbes sawmill, in Gun
Plains, which was operated by water power, conducting
the enterprise for two years. He then disposed of his
interests with a view of going to California, for it
was during the period of the gold excitement on the
Pacific coast. He, however, abandoned that idea and,
having accumulated about one thousand dollars,
purchased in partnership a stock of goods in the
spring of 1850 and engaged in commercial pursuits in
Otsego for two years, when his brother-in-law
purchased the other party's interest and became a
member of the firm, which so continued for one year,
when, in March, 1853, the brother-in-law died, after
which Mr. Higgins continued the business alone until
1855. He then disposed of his stock of merchandise and
engaged in lumbering and farming for a time. He also
conducted the first circular sawmill in Allegan
county, conducting this enterprise until the spring of
1865, when he disposed of that business and once more
entered merchandising in Otsego, conducting a general
store there until 1871, in which year he failed, for
this was the period following the Civil war, when
prices greatly depreciated and caused a financial
panic all over the country. In 1867 he invested twelve
thousand dollars in the woolen factory, which had been
established a short time before, but sold his interest
therein in 1872. He also owned at one time a tract of
four hundred and twenty-seven acres of land all in one
body adjoining the village east and south, purchasing
this in 1861, and in addition to this he owned fifty
lots in the village of Otsego, but he suffered a great
loss in this, for after the war prices in property
also greatly depreciated. In 1876 Mr. Higgins removed
to Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he assumed charge of
a mill for one year, subsequent to which time he again
returned to Allegan county, taking up his abode in
Otsego township, where he purchased forty acres of
land on which stood a mill, this constituting a
portion of his present home property. He added to his
original purchase from time to time until his farm
embraced four hundred acres, but he has since disposed
of some of it and now retains possession of one
hundred and twenty acres. This he has greatly
improved, erecting modern and substantial buildings,
and his place today ranks among the valuable
properties of this portion of the county. His mill and
barn were destroyed by fire, which caused him a loss
of four thousand dollars, as he had no insurance on
the mill property. He soon rebuilt the sawmill,
however, and has arranged a feed mill in connection.
Mr. Higgins has also been interested in the railroad
development of this section of the state, having owned
considerable stock in the Grand Trunk Railroad Company
as well as in the Grand Rapids & Indiana Company, but
he lost several thousand dollars in these investments.
He has been interested in various enterprises from an
early day, and while some have proved a failure
financially he has prospered in others, so that he has
acquired altogether a very comfortable competence. Mr.
Higgins has been three times married. He was first
wedded August 17, 1850, to Mrs. Eliza A. Cole, a
native of Allegheny county, New York, who in her
maidenhood bore the name of Fairwell. Her death
occurred in the Allegan county home, March 1, 1884,
when she had reached the age of sixty-two years, her
birth occurring January 11, 1822. There was one son by
this union, Morton Willard, who was born September 15,
1853, and died April 15, 1868. Mr. Higgins was married
November 22, 1885, to Miss Harriet A. Blackman, who
was born in Ohio, February 5, 1827, and came to
Michigan with her parents in 1853, her father being
John H. Blackman. Previous to her marriage she was
engaged for several years in the profession of
teaching, having taught for eight years in the Allegan
high school. Her death occurred May 19, 1890. February
21, 1891, Mr. Higgins married Mrs. Lovinia Seymour
Hurley
, a daughter of Frank Seymour. She was born in
Clyde township, this county, April 9, 1862. She is a
niece of her husband's second wife. Mr. Higgins
supported the Whig party in early years, casting his
first presidential ballot for Zachary Taylor, and upon
the formation of the new Republican party he supported
its principles, voting for its first presidential
nominee, Fremont, and has since supported the
candidates of that party. He assisted the movement to
establish the first Republican newspaper in Kalamazoo
county, the Telegraph. He has taken an active and
helpful interest in all public affairs, holding the
office of school director for many years, while in
1850 he was elected township clerk, filling the office
for two years. In 1856 he was elected sheriff of
Allegan county, being the first Republican sheriff,
the nomination having been urged upon him by a
committee of citizens. He served in that capacity for
two years, refusing a re-nomination. He was likewise
the first president of the village of Otsego, filling
the office for three or four terms, while for more
than two decades he has served his school district as
assessor. He has been identified with the
Congregational church at Otsego since 1863, and has
served as church trustee for many years. He
contributed liberally to the building of the church of
that denomination and has since been a heavy
contributor to its support. He is identified with the
Masonic order, belonging to the Blue Lodge at Otsego
and the Royal Arch Chapter at Kalamazoo. There is
perhaps no man in Allegan county who has done so much
for the development and up-building of various
commercial and industrial enterprises as Mr. Higgins.
He has given both time and money, and it is due to his
untiring efforts that a great majority of the public
enterprises of this section of the state have met with
success. When he came to Allegan county as a boy there
was every evidence of frontier life to be seen. Many
kinds of wild animals were still to be seen roaming
over the prairies and one had ample opportunity to
indulge his love of hunting. Otsego at that time
contained but three houses, but as the years have
passed it has now become a thriving and enterprising
little village. Mr. Higgins instituted the milling
business in his locality and this business has since
become one of the most important in this great state.
Mr. Higgins has ever followed the most reliable and
straightforward methods in his business transactions
and has thereby won the confidence and esteem of all
with whom he has been associated. He has now passed
the eighty-third milestone on life's journey and has
lived in Allegan county for more than seven decades,
being one of the oldest living citizens at the present
time in point of continuous residence in the county.

Bio of SYLVESTER HIGGINS of Michigan

Source: Portrait and Biographical Album of Barry and Eaton Counties, Michigan ...By Chapman Brothers Published 1891
PORTRAIT AND BIOGRAPHICAL ALBUM.
SYLVESTER HIGGINS. The largest mill in the vicinity of Bellevue, is that put up by Sylvester Higgins some years since, and now operated by the firm of S. & C. L. Higgins, who manufacture pickets, broom handles and other varieties of lumber products. The mill is 28x42 feet, of thirty horse-power, and has a capacity of six thousand square feet per day. The company ships lumber to Battle Creek and Lansing, and does a large business. The senior partner is the owner of a fine farm consisting of one hundred and sixty-five acres on section 9, Bellevue Township, ninety-five acres being improved with a full line of substantial buildings, an orchard, and the minor adornments and conveniences which belong to a well-regulated estate. All these have resulted from the energy and good judgment of the present owner of the place. Samuel Higgins, the father of our subject, is numbered among the pioneers of Eaton County, he having been the first to settle in the northern part of Bellevue Township. He was born in Middle Haddam, Conn., and was a shoemaker by trade, and also carried on a farm in Franklin County, Mass. He removed from that place to North Adams, where he worked in a calico factory until 1836, when he came hither. He bought sixty acres of Government land, which is a part of the present estate of his son Sylvester, and taking up his residence in a log house, followed farming until a short time before his death. He then lived retired in Marshall, but died at Battle Creek while on a visit there. He was then seventy-five years old. During the Revolution he went out to defend Boston Harbor. He was an Elder in the Presbyterian Church, and was an upright and earnest Christian. His wife, formerly Elizabeth Nims, was born in Shelburne, Mass., and died in Bellevue when sixty- eight years old. The family of which Sylvester Higgins is the sixth member and the only survivor, included eleven brothers and sisters. He was born in Heath, Mass., March 8, 1810, and until he was twenty years old lived on a farm there. He had good common school privileges and excellent home training, remaining under the parental roof until he was apprenticed at wagon-making at Colerain. After two years spent in that place, he took a tramp with a partner to Norwich, where he hired out for the winter. Thence he went to Windham, Conn., where he worked two years, going from that place to North Adams, where, as one of the firm of Higgins & Everett he was engaged in manufacturing carriages and repairing coaches three years. In the spring of 1837 Mr. Higgins came to this State, and buying land in the township in which he now lives he tilled the soil here until the fall of 1838, when he returned to Massachusetts. He took a contract to build twenty-five wagons at Charlemont, and when the job was finished went to Covington, built a shop and carried it on five years. Coming again to Southern Michigan he built a log house and again took up farm work on a thirty-five acre tract north of Bellevue. He bought and sold farms for three or four years, and made money in this way. He purchased property on section 9, and in 1850 bought the homestead of sixty, acres, upon which he located, and to which he added until the estate amounted to two hundred acres. In 1868 he put up an immense barn at a cost of $3,000, and also started a sawmill of ten horse-power. A couple of years later he built the present mill. He was also engaged in hop raising for some time, cultivating six acres a year, and had a large hop house. His son C. L., who is a natural mechanic, invented a hop press and they built three of them and baled some hops. Mr. Higgins keeps some stock, but makes a specialty of wheat and clover seed, his sales of the latter amounting to from $200 to $300 per year. July 8, 1834, Mr. Higgins and Miss Eliza M. Bisbee became husband and wife, the wedding ceremony taking place at the bride's home in Plainfield, Mass. That lady was a daughter of John Bisbee, a Massachusetts farmer, was a capable housekeeper, a devoted wife and mother, and a good neighbor. She was a Spiritualist in belief. She shared her husband's fortunes more than half a century, closing her eyes to earthly scenes February 5, 1888, at the age of seventy-seven years. The children that came to bless this happy union are five in number: Charles, the first-born, is proprietor of the Toronto (Canada) Billiard Hall; Mary is the wife of Ira Scargent, their home being in Bellevue; C. L., his  father's partner, married Miss Caroline Fitch, and has four children; Henry, who is now a traveling salesman, was a member of the Twentieth Michigan Infantry during the Civil War; Horatio is a manufacturer  of lumber, and has also a cider mill and jelly factory in Bellevue.

C. L. Higgins volunteered in August, 1861, in the Sixty-sixth Illinois Regiment of Western Sharpshooters, Company C, and was mustered into service at St. Louis, Mo. He fought at Pittsburg Landing, Ft. Donelson and Shiloh, and during the advance to Atlanta. He was mustered out in August, 1864. He is a carpenter by trade, and is a member of the order of Patrons of Industry. Mr. Higgins served as Justice of the Peace four years, Commissioner of Highways three years, and had a place upon the School Board twenty years in succession. He votes a straight Republican ticket and has frequently been sent to county and State conventions. Although eighty-one years old he is still able to stand in the mill and saw pickets all day, a feat that few men of seventy would find easy to accomplish. He is widely known and well regarded by his acquaintances.
