His wife Mary Higgins filed for a widows pension (Application # 544906) in what appears to say March? 28,1892?. No record of the widows pension being granted. Both pensions filed for in North Dakota.

Appears on 1890 Veterans Census Schedule Walle, Grand Forks, North Dakota-refers to his service as a Private in the 5th Minnesota Infantry

In the 1890 Veterans Census Schedule Rockford, Wright County, Minnesota, Sarah J. Higgins is listed as the widow of John M. Higgins. It lists his service as private in the regiment and company mentioned above.
