Civil War pension records show John Higgins received an invalid's pension May 5, 1887 for his service in Company "A" 3rd regiment North Carolina Mounted Infantry (Application # 608615 Certificate # 478862). Index shows his date of death as April 14, 1898 in North Carolina. His widow applied for a pension (application # 703308) but no record of it being granted.

Lucius Higgins enlisted February 1, 1865 at the age of 18 as a Private in company "G" of the 3rd regiment North Carolina Infantry for 3 years service. His place of enlistment was Knoxville, Tennessee. He was mustered in on February 16, 1865. By February 28th he is listed as Corporal. Died of fever in General Hospital at Knoxville on April 1, 1865.

Personal Information: Born Yancey County, N.C., Dark Eyes, Dark Hair, Fair Complexion, 5 ft 5 in tall. His occupation is noted as farmer. File notes his residence as Burrville, Yancey County, N.C.

Civil War pension Index shows Esther Higgins received a widow's pension (Application # 103883 & Certificate # 75357) on July 29 1865 for her husband, Lucius Higgins', service in Company "G" 3rd North Carolina Mounted Infantry (Union). She also received a pension (Application # 189184 & Certificate # 171181) on July 23,1896 for a minor named Joseph Andrew Higgins. It does not state where they were filed.

Esther Elizabeth Higgins (nee Sparks), age 18 (Born April 25, 1846), a resident of Egypt, Yancey County, North Carolina, filed for a pension for the service of her husband, Lucius Higgins of Company "G" 3rd North Carolina Mounted Infantry, who died of the measles on April 1, 1865 at General Hospital at Knoxville, Tennessee. He had enrolled for duty on February 1, 1865 and was mustered in as a Private on February 16, 1865 for 3 years or war. He attained the rank of Corporal. He had married Esther Sparks on September 9, 1863 in Yancey County, North Carolina. They had one son born, Joseph Andrew Higgins, born June 3, 1864. Personal description: Age 18, 5 ft 5 in tall, Fair complexion, Dark hair, Dark eyes, A farmer by occupation. Esther Higgins later married Solomon Miller on February 9, 1866. Solomon Miller died January 1, 1905 at Burnsville, North Carolina.
