History and complete roster of the Massachusetts regiments, minute men of 61 - By George Warren Nason -  Published 1910
A.M. Higgins was born in Georgetown, Me, February 25, 1836. His Grandfather was a soldier in the United States Army in the war of 1812. Mr. Higgins' father was a captain in the Maine State Militia. In the spring of 1860 he joined the. First Massachusetts Light Battery, then known as the Boston Light Artillery. On April 20, 1861, word came informing him the Battery had been ordered to Washington. He at once left his work, proceeded to his home, donned his uniform and reported at the armory at 6.45 p.m. Mustered in May 18. Mustered out, August 2.

On July 11, 1864, the Regiment formed what was known as the Eleventh Battalion, and he remained with that organization, till the end of the war. His total time of service was two years and two months. He participated in the battles of Culpepper, Locust Grove, Mine Run, The Wilderness, Deep Bottom, Weldon Railroad, Hatche's Run, February 5, 1865. He was wounded at the Battle of the Wilderness during the second day of the fight, and at the engagement at Hatche's Run, March 31, was taken prisoner. He was honorably discharged with rank of Corporal on May 26, 1865. He has been an Odd Fellow for thirty-four years and has received all the honor that the subordinate lodge and the encampment can give.

Christy Ann Higgins (nee Mickle), age 36, filed for a pension on January 26, 1866 for the loss of her husband, Brown D. Higgins, who was a soldier in Company "B" of the 58th Massachusetts Veteran Volunteer Infantry. He had attained the rank of sergeant. He died of Typhoid fever on July 21, 1865 at his residence in Taunton, Massachusetts. They were married 16 August 1855 at their residence in Rhode Island. He was born in North Providence, Rhode island. His parents were Hiram H. & Waity Higgins. She was born in Nova Scotia. Her parents were James and Isabella Mickle. Her father was a Pastor in the 2nd Universal (Unitarian) Church.
They had 3 children; Henry N. born March 10, 1856, age 9, James L, born February 3, 1858, age 7, and Edgar B., born May 27, 1861, age 4. She remarried on May 14, 1866 to Henry William Padelford who was a Railroad Employee. He was the son of Solomon and Mary A. Padelford. Henry W. Padelford died of Asthma at Taunton, Massachusetts on March 31, 1889. Christy died June 24, 1907.

He was mortally wounded at the battle of Winchester,  Virginia May 24,1862 and died, in enemy hands, on May 25, 1862. He was the son of Isaac Higgins and Almeda Baldwin. On 2 June 1861 at Warwick, Massachusetts, Charles married Emeline Fuller Delva, daughter of Calvin Wilder Delva and Lucy Maria Fuller. He enlisted 18 October 1862 in Company H, the 53rd Massachusetts Volunteers. Charles W. Higgins died on Wednesday, 2 December 1914 at Orange, Massachusetts, at age 79 years, 7 months and 26 days. 2

DAVID HIGGINS. Born in Standhope, P. E. Island, in 1830, and died at Hyde Park, Mass., April 8, 1897, of hypertrophy of the heart, at the age of sixty-seven years. He entered the service July 12. 1864, as Private in Co. A, 6th Mass. Vols., and was mustered out Oct. 27, 1864, by reason of expiration of term of service, having served one hundred days.

       David Higgins was born in Standhope, Prince Edward Island, April 21, 1828, died in Hyde Park April 8, 1897, aged 68 years, 11 months, 9 days. He came to Boston from the Provinces in 1853, and to Fairmount in the spring of 1856, and drove the first nail in the first of the twenty houses, on the corner of Fairmount avenue and Beacon street. Feb. 22, 1857, he was married to Miss Antoinette M. Hagerman, in Boston, and came immediately to Fairmount to live. The first school in Fairmount was in the parlor of his house. He sheltered the ministers who came to preach in the new schoolhouse after one was put up. He was a brother of Mrs. John Lawson, an early resident. Mr. Higgins was a master builder and built many of the houses in the early history of the town. He served in the 6th regiment in the Civil War. Was one of the charter members of the Baptist church. He was buried in Fairview.

George C. Higgins, of Lynn, Republican, was born in Orleans, Nov. 19, 1845, and was educated in its public schools. Removing to Lynn in 1862, learned trade of morocco dresser, and followed its various branches, serving as foreman several years, until 1883, when he became a book-keeper and salesman for a Boston leather-store, where he remained until 1892, since which time he has given his time to conveyancing, probate business, care of estates, etc. In 1881-83 m Common Council; mayor in 1888. Enlisted in Company D. Eighth Regiment, in 1864, for three months, his regiment being stationed at Baltimore. Member of General Lander Post, G. A. R.. Royal Arch Mason, Sutton Chapter, and member of Providence Lodge of Odd Fellows. Now chairman of overseers of the poor. On committees on probate and insolvency and rules in House of 1893. On same committees, and clerk of liquor law

JOHN HIGGINS, son of John and Catherine Higgins, was born June 24, 1836, in Limerick County, Ireland. He enlisted Aug. 26, 1864, and was mustered into the United States service on the same day, for one year, as a private of Co. B, 61st Regt. Mass. Vols. He was in the battle of Petersburg, April, 1865, and was mustered out of service June 4, 1865. He removed to Hopkinton, where he died several years since.

Joseph B. Higgins resided at Orleans, Mass., and was a mariner. He enlisted June 24, 1864, in Co. F, Third Massachusetts Heavy Artillery, and was discharged August 24. Mrs. Temperance Higgins died Nov. 2, 1865, aged 27 years, 7 months.

Ellen Higgins, age 60, a resident of Boston Massachusetts, was the mother of Patrick Higgins. She filed for a pension on July 12, 1865. Patrick Higgins was a Private in Company "E" 56th Massachusetts Infantry. He had service which began January 12, 1864 for 3 years service. Patrick died at Douglas hospital in Washington, D.C. on July 2, 1865 of phthisis pulmanatis.
Patrick Higgins was unmarried and had no children. His mother Ellen Higgins was married to Daniel Higgins, who abandoned and deserted the family in June of 1848. They had been married in Ireland in September of 1843.
An affidavit in this file states that Patrick had previously been wounded in right side at Battle of Antietam on September 17, 1862. The file also notes previous service in Company "E" 28th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry.

Peter Higgins, born in 1838, is a son of John W. and grandson of Benjamin, whose father, Elkanah, was a son of Ebenezer Higgins. Richard Higgins was born in England and came to Plymouth, Mass., soon after that town was settled, as his name appears in the list of freemen of 1633. He married Mary Gates of Plymouth. He was chosen deputy in 1649, 1661 and 1667, and was selectman three years. His son Jonathan was married to Elizabeth Rogers in 1660, and had eight children.  From these have descended all the families of the name in Barnstable county. Peter Higgins is a farmer and fisherman. He served in the civil war from July, 1862, to June, 1865, in Company I., Thirty-third Massachusetts Infantry, and is a member of Frank D. Hammond Post, G. A. R. He was in the lighthouse service four years and has held several minor town offices. He married for his first wife, Harriet E. Baker, who died leaving one son, Henry F. His second marriage was with Phebe E. Burroughs. They have two sons John W. and William B. and have lost three daughters - Sarah E., Florence B. and Flora B.

A pension application (Application # 11966 Certificate # 12793)for his minor child Medora Higgins ,b. 04/04/1850, who resided in Trenton, Maine states he enrolled November 2, 1861 and enlisted and was mustered in December 1, 1861 as a private in Company "C" 32nd Massachusetts Infantry. He died October 1, 1862* at the hospital at the seminary at Fairfax, Virginia of acute diarrhea.
The pension application states Thomas Higgins was married to Emily Wasgatt (sp) both of Eden Maine, on  at Eden, Maine.
(document from pastor states they were married July 4, 1849) She claims in a divorce affidavit she filed in August 1855 that they were married August 12, 1849. She stated that he abandoned her with child on November of same year. They were divorced on May 22,1856.

William Higgins, son of John and Ann, was born in Belfast, Ireland. He enlisted March 17,1862 in Company "M" 1st Heavy Artillery, at the age of seventeen, and re-enlisted as a veteran on 20 March 1864. A nearly as can be determined, he was with his regiment in its hard service in the Army of the Potomac through the early summer of 1864, was taken prisoner probably on the 22nd of June at the Weldon Railroad, when 179 of the regiment were captured, and was first sent to Andersonville, Georgia, and thence to Florence S.C., where he died* in prison in the 15th of February 1865, of Malarial Fever, contracted in the hideous of the prison pen. His age at death was twenty.
