COLONEL BENJAMIN L. HIGGINS.
The name of Colonel Benjamin L. Higgins figures prominently on military
records of New York and equally prominently in connection with the
municipal and business interests of Syracuse. Colonel Higgins was a
native of Massachusetts, born at Brewster on the 14th of October, 1826.
He was one of a family of six sons and two daughters, the children of
Samuel Higgins, a sea-faring man whose home was in Cape Cod. In the year
1837 the parents removed
to Syracuse, where they resided until both passed away in 1866.
Colonel Higgins was a youth of eleven years when the family came to this
city, and his education, begun in Massachusetts, was continued in the
public schools here. In his youth he learned the trade of a molder at
the Phoenix foundry and about the time of his marriage became a partner
of his father-in-law, John M. Clark, in the daguerreotype business. He
later gave his attention exclusively for about twelve years to the
interests of the fire department and
afterward joined the army. Following his return from the war he was
connected with the wholesale liquor business as a member of the firm of
Higgins & Storrs, and later Higgins & Ufiord. He was thus associated in
business until the spring prior to his death, when he retired from all
active trade relations, enjoying a well merited rest during his
remaining days.
At all times Colonel Higgins was deeply interested in the city and its
welfare
and co-operated in many movements that have had direct bearing upon its
progress and upbuilding. As stated, he was for many years connected with
the volunteer fire department, which he joined as torch boy for Engine
Company, No. 1, on the day of the great powder explosion August 20,
1841, and lighted the-company to that fire, at which he was seriously
injured by a falling timber that had been lifted into the air by the
explosion, a nail being driven into his skull,
inflicting a wound that rendered him unconscious for several days. This
did not
seem to crush his interest in the fire department, however, for when he
had
recovered from the injury he was again on active duty and was chief of
the
department from about 1848 until 1861. He proved a splendid executive
officer and under his direction the department became noted for its
discipline and efficiency. He was also prominent in the state
organization of
volunteer firemen.
Severing his connection with the fire department, he joined the Union
army, enlisting in 1861 as a volunteer. He raised a company composed
largely of volunteers from the fire department and was chosen captain of
this
company, which was attached to the Eighty-sixth Regiment of New York
Infantry under command of Colonel Bailey. The company rendezvoused at
Elmira and was mustered in as Company A, Eighty-sixth New York
Volunteers with Captain Higgins at its head. On reaching Washington he
was detailed to the charge of the old capital prison and upon his own
request was subsequently relieved and rejoined his regiment for active
service in the field. With his command he participated in many important
battles and skirmishes. He was in the second battle of Bull Run, was
also at Gettysburg, Fredericksburg and Mine Run. On each occasion he was
wounded and at Mine Run was shot through both legs, his injuries being
so serious that his life was despaired of. However his strong
constitution triumphed and he recovered. He returned home but as soon as
possible rejoined his regiment. At Chancellorsville the lieutenant
colonel was killed and Captain Higgins took his place. Promotions came
to him rapidly and on the walls of the room. in which his last hours
were spent there hung eight muster rolls: In as captain, August 26,
1861; out as captain, March 2, 1863; in as major March 3, 1863; out as
major, May 3, 1863; in as lieutenant colonel, May 3, 1863; out as
lieutenant colonel, June 30, 1863; in as colonel, July 1, 1863; and out
as colonel, July 9, 1864. This is a record such as few can show as
soldiers of the Civil war. At Chancellorsville his superior officer,
Colonel Bailey, was absent from the regiment and the command was in
charge of Lieutenant Colonel Chapin, who was instantly killed by the
side of Major Higgins. The command then was with Higgins, who was
immediately mustered out on the battlefield as major and mustered in as
lieutenant colonel in command. Colonel Bailey resigned and on the 30th
of June Lieutenant Colonel Higgins was mustered out and on the 1st of
July mustered in as colonel of the regiment. On the 9th of July, 1864,
he was mustered out on account of disability occasioned by wounds that
crippled him for life. Colonel Higgins was beloved by his men because of
his soldierly qualities, his constant care for their welfare and his
unostentatious bearing. He retained their love and esteem to the last
and the war veterans of East Syracuse named their Grand Army post in his
honor. There has also been
erected on Sickles avenue at Gettysburg a superb monument for the
Eighty-sixth
New York Infantry, which is adorned with an exquisite bar relief—a
mother
weeping over her son, while engraved upon it are the words, “I yield him
to his
country and to his God.” When no longer able for active duty in the
field
Colonel Higgins returned to his home and reentered business life in
Syracuse.
In early manhood Colonel Higgins was united in marriage to Miss Mary
Jane Clark, a daughter of John M. and Martha Frances Clark. Her father
was a native of Rochester and removed to Syracuse when Mrs. Higgins was
twelve years of age.. His political allegiance was given to the
democracy. His wife, a native of Connecticut, long survived him, passing
away at the advanced age of ninety-two years.
In politics Colonel Higgins was recognized as one of the leaders of the
republican party in Syracuse and did much to promote its interests. In
1851 he
was elected alderman of the third ward and served for one year. Again in
1868-9 he represented the seventh ward in the city council. Following
the close of the war he was for several years a gauger in the internal
revenue department of the government. In his beautiful home he had
fitted up a room in which he had arranged the commissions and other
records of his services as officer in the Union army and in the fire
department of the city—a veritable gallery of the acts of a life largely
devoted to his country and to the city which he made his home. He was
always an active, public-spirited man and withheld his cooperation from
no movement which he deemed would prove of public benefit. He became a
charter member of Dwight Post, G. A. R., and was afterward a member of
Root Post. During his last illness his veteran comrades were unremitting
in their attentions. He always delighted in their companionship and in
recollections concerning days spent upon the battlefields, on long
marches, or in the great battles of the war. He was at all times a
soldier standing loyally for what he believed to be right and displaying
at all times valor and fearlessness. He died November 19, 1891, and
though seventeen years have since come and gone his memory is yet
cherished by those who knew him and by the city which benefited so
greatly by his services.

The Higgins family lived in the now well-known mansion at 20 Central
Avenue in Fredonia. According to the 1881 Atlas, “T. L. Higgins,
son of Isaac and Hannah Higgins, was born in Brookfield,
Conn., November 17th, 1820, and came to Fredonia with his parents in the
fall of 1821. November 15th, 1840, he married Rachel Watkins, born in
Nassau, N.Y., June 5th, 1820, at that time a resident of Ellington. His
father, Isaac H. Higgins, was, as was his wife Hannah,
born in Connecticut. He came to Fredonia in 1821. He served as
supervisor of the town of Cold Spring, Cattaraugus county, and also as
justice of the peace. Mr. Higgins is a contractor and oil producer.”
In 1887, part of the Higgins lands along Temple Street were sold by
Thomas L. Higgins and his wife Rachel W. Higgins to Gaius M. Tremaine.
HISTORY OF CHAUTAUQUA COUNTY By ANDREW W. YOUNG - Published 1875
Isaac Higgins was born in South-east, Putnam Co., N. Y., about
the year 1797. He removed from Brookfield, Conn., in 1821, to Portland,
and, about 1831, to Pomfret; and thence, after about ten years, to
Pennsylvania, where he died about 1853.
Thomas L. Higgins, son of Isaac, was born Nov. 17, 1820; lived
with his father during the early part of his life; received his
education in the district school and Fredonia academy. For some time he
was a surveyor of government lands in Northern Michigan. He was for
several years a clerk, and thereafter, for many years, in the lumber
business, in Cattaraugus Co.; and, in 1858, he returned to Fredonia,
where he still resides. He was married to Rachel Watkins, of
Clear Creek. They had five children: Charles A., who was orderly
of Col. Drake in the army of the Potomac; and who subsequently went with
Lieutenant Commander Cushing to China, in the naval service, and
returned on account of sickness, and died soon after his return;
Henrietta Agnes, who died at 20; Phebe M., who died at 6;
Thomas L., Jr., who died at 8; and Lucy M.

JEDEDIAH WILLY HIGGINS
Company I New York Volunteers ( 173 ) Infantry..
-An excerpt from the link above-
In 1863 on Dec 17th Willie enrolled for the Civil War under the pseudonym of John
Hartford. He gave his age as 22, when it was in fact 18. He was enrolled in
company I New York Volunteers ( 173 ) Infantry.
He gave a false name because he was under age and knew if his father had tracked him down he would prevent
him from going to the war. He kept the initials J H From March until August 1864 he was in St. Louis
General Hospital at New Orleans probably due to the atrocious conditions that the troops had to put up
with.

-G.A.R. FINDS RIP VAN WINKLE-
-Veteran who did not know there was a Grand Army-
A new member was admitted last night to Kit Carson Post # 2,Dept of the Potomac
G.A.R., who, though a veteran of the civil war, did not know until a week ago
that such an organization as the Grand Army was in existence. He is Jedidiah W.
Higgins, who immediately after the close of the great struggle, went to New
Zealand, as has for ever since worked for the cause of the Salvation Army
there. Coming to this country on a 6 months visit wondered if all his comrades of '61 were
dead. Inquires elicited the fact that the ones still alive were probably
at the meetings of the G.A.R.
"What is the G.A.R." asked Mr. Higgins
A great body of veterans being explained to him, he made an application to become a member of Kit Carson
post.
Mr. Higgins fought in the 173rd Regiment Volunteer New York Infantry.

marches and Gallant Deeds of the 115th Regiment New York Volunteers By
James H. Clark
Lawrence Higgins was born in Waterford, Saratoga Co., and enlisted from the same town. He was a cooper by
trade, and 18 years of age. While the regiment was encamped on the fair ground at Chicago, Ill., he was
taken with the typhoid fever and lay in one of those miserable horse-stalls, until all hopes of his
recovery were vain. Four of his comrades then carried him to a hospital in Camp Douglas, already so crowded
that it was difficult to find room to lay down the new sufferer. He was past human aid and soon died. His
body was enclosed in a neat mahogany coffin and forwarded to his parents in Waterford.
