-JOHN HIGGINS-
Was born May 10, 1840, in Saint Lawrence County, N. Y.; has been a
farmer and paper-maker. Enlisted April, 1858, in Company M, 2d U. S.
Artillery; and later in the 5th New Jersey Battery and Independent
Company, commanded by Captain Warren; served continuously as a
private, and was finally discharged at the Presidio of California in
July, 1868; was attached to the 10th and 25th Army Corps; served in
the Army of the James in the Horse Artillery; was present at and
took part in the battles of First Bull Run, Williamsburg, Hanover
Courthouse, Seven Days' Fight, White Oak Swamp, Malvern Hill, Second
Bull Run, Middletown, South Mountain, Antietam, Martinsburg, Brandy
Station, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg; was slightly wounded by
musketball in leg at Hanover Courthouse; while at Hartford Church,
in the fall of 1863, was presented by General Ingalls with a fine
horse, as a reward for skillfully bringing in a drove of cattle from
outside the Federal lines, having with a few troopers made a
successful raid of over sixty miles in one day. Comrade Higgins is a
member of Rawlins Post, No. 23, of Stockton, Cal., where he resides.

Ruth M. Higgins, a resident of Cumberland County, Maine, the mother
of Mark J. Higgins, filed for a pension on May 13th, 1865. Mark J.
Higgins was a Private in Company "D" of 1st Battalion, 11th United
States Infantry. Ruth M. Higgins was a widow of Simeon Higgins who
died in August of 1852.
According to these records Mark J. Higgins was captured along the
Welden Railroad in Virginia on August 18, 1864 and that he never
returned to the regiment. Ruth M. Higgins was dropped from the
pension rolls on September 4, 1877 by failure to claim pension.

Fannie M. Higgins (nee Gleason), a resident of Dayton, Ohio and the
widow of John A. Higgins, a corporal in Company "A" 1st United
States Engineers. filed a claim for a widows pension on November 27,
1865. John A. Higgins had enlisted as a Private on October 17, 1864
for one year of service. He was promoted to Corporal. He died of
Typhoid on July 8, 1865 at General Hospital at Columbia, Tennessee.
She and John A. Higgins were married on November 28, 1853 by Pastor
Harris, a Minister of the 1st Baptist Church at Steuben County, New
York. There were no children of this marriage. John Higgins at the
time of his marriage was a resident of Tyrone, New York. Fannie
Gleason was then a resident of Ithaca, New York.
