Karroll Higgins
The Norman Transcript
A memorial service for Karroll Higgins, 87, will be
held at 2 p.m. Friday, at Norman's First Baptist
Church. Dr. Wade Smith will officiate.
Karroll died Friday, Feb. 22. He was born in Geary, OK
on Feb. 18, 1921, the son of Opal Shawver and Neb
Higgins and was reared in Tuttle. Valedictorian of
Rush Springs High School, he later graduated from
Oklahoma State University. During World War II while
serving in the Merchant Marines, he married Mary Ruth
Bradley. They celebrated their 65th anniversary on
Feb. 20.
On completion of his degree and his time in the
Merchant Marines, Karroll taught school for five years
at Roosevelt and Frederick, OK. He gave up teaching to
become a cattle ranch manager. For many years he
worked with cattle in Texas and Pennsylvania raising
several national champions. When he retired form the
cattle business in 1974, the Higgins family moved to
Norman and opened three retail stores.
Karroll was a man given many gifts, he used them all
to glorify God. He was inspired to write poetry with a
desire to lead others to become Christians. He also
had a deep concern for the Cowboy Ministry. He lived a
full and spirited life enjoying all of his experiences
and making friends wherever he went. His zest for life
was complimented by his sincere love for family,
friends and anyone he came in contact with.
A deacon in the First Baptist Church, he loved the
Lord and will be remembered as an encourager. An adult
Sunday School Department which grew strong while he
and his wife were the teachers in named in their
honor.
An avid sports fan and an ardent golfer who had a
hole-in-one on all three Norman courses, he took great
pleasure in observing his grandchildren's
accomplishments. He was a man who taught life lessons
to all ages from his peers to his youngest
great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother,
N.C. Higgins and a son, James Karroll Higgins.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Ruth of the home; two
daughters and their families, Becky and Thomas Leon,
Norman, and Susan and Dr. Ted Wallace, Starkville,
Miss.; grandchildren include Monica Leon Boyd and her
husband, Deren of Norman, T.J. Leon and his wife Quinn
of Columbia, Mo., Stephanie Wallace and her fianc?
Alan Mumbower, Katie Wallace, Sarah Wallace and Trey
Wallace, all of Starkville; and great-grandchildren,
Breyden Boyd, Brody Boyd and Behrett Boyd, all of
Norman.
Memorial donations may be made in Karroll's name to
further the Missions Programs at First Baptist Church,
211 W. Comanche St., Norman, OK 73069.

Buell "Bill" T. HIGGINS Born February 18, 1918 in Lamar, Oklahoma. Died Jan.
13th, 2004 in Seattle of Cancer. He attended school in Lamar and graduated
from Moss High School in 1936. Later attended Oklahoma University and in
1940 (World War II) was drafted into the United States Air Force. He went to
the Air Force Cadet school for flying. On graduation he taught Pilots to fly
the B-17, later Bill went on to fly the B-29 heavy bomber as Captain and was
stationed on Tinian Island in the South Pacific. He flew 36 missions over
Japan during 1945. After the war he moved to Seattle and worked for PNB and
US West Telephone Company for 35 years, retiring in 1981. Bill was an active
member of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod at Maltby,
WA. He leaves his wife of 60 years, Trudy, daughter Loraine Higgins of
Bothell, WA.; son John and daughter-in-law Claudia of Carnation, WA.,
granddaughter Sarah/Ben Kelm of Bozeman, Montana, grandson Mitchell Higgins
of Woodinville, WA. granddaughter Laura Higgins of Carnation. A sister Lucy
Little of Chickasha, OK. Also numerous nieces and nephews. If you wish,
memorials to Providence Hospice of Seattle, 425 Pontius Ave N. Suite #300,
Seattle, or 911 Medics in Northgate area or Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran
Church, Maltby, WA. Viewing will be Monday, one hour prior to the service.
Funeral Services will be conducted by Pastor Kerry Reese, January 19th, 2004
at 10am at Evergreen-Washelli Chapel, 11111 Aurora Ave. N. Seattle.

OBITUARY
Linda Lomenick, 63, of Stillwater, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, in her home,
with her family at her side, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday in the Strode Chapel with
Terry Tharp, pastor of the Good News Community Church in Perkins,
officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Garden, located south of
Stillwater. Services are under the direction of Strode Funeral Home.
She was born Sept. 11, 1941, in Crescent to James W. and Grace (Long)
Higgins. She worked at Oklahoma State University for over 35 years, mostly
as a telephone operator.
Lomenick was an avid bowler and participated in numerous leagues at Frontier
Lanes.
In addition to the many state tournaments she participated in, she also
bowled in several national tournaments around the country. She was also a
state officer in the Oklahoma Women's Bowling Association, Inc., serving as
a director. Locally, she was a longtime secretary for some of the leagues.
She enjoyed watching football and basketball, especially when the Oklahoma
State Cowboys were on television. Her other enjoyments included cookouts and
playing cards with her family and traveling. She also enjoyed camping,
fishing and watching her grandchildren participate in their activities.
Her parents, four brothers and two sisters preceded her in death.
In addition to her husband, Jim, of the home, she is survived by two sons,
Rick Lomenick and wife, Renae, of Perkins and Ron Lomenick and wife, Lori,
of Perry; two daughters, Rhonda Anderson and husband, Mark, of Perkins and
Becky Lomenick and fiance, Jeff Blocker; eight grandchildren, Wil Anderson,
Savannah Anderson, Krystal Lomenick, Kyle Lomenick, Jordan Lomenick, Casey
Lomenick, Cooper Lomenick and John Bode; three sisters, Zelma Fisher, Viola
Dicus and Cora Sutton, all of Stillwater; one aunt, Inez Blasier, of
Stillwater as well as several nieces and nephews and other relatives and
friends.
Pallbearers are Clem White, Gordon White, Scott Lowery, Bill Lowery, Bobby
Blair and Scrub Dollins. Honorary pallbearers will be her four grandsons.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Judith Karman
Hospice in Stillwater or to the Good News Community Church Building Fund in
Perkins.

and discontinued December 31, 1913.

RALPH HIGGINS COACH (Inducted 1982)
Born May 22, 1902, Fort Cobb, Okla. Died September 13, 1993.
The track coach at Oklahoma State University for 32 years, Ralph Higgins was
on the Olympic staff in 1956 and 1960 and developed such top athletes as
Olympian J.W. Mashburn, outstanding pole vaulters Jim Graham, George Davies
and Aubrey Dooley and miler Tom Von Ruden.
Higgins graduated from Oklahoma State in 1925 (then Oklahoma A&M) after a
sports career that saw him compete in football, basketball and track,
winning the Southwest Conference 100 and 440 titles in the latter sport. He
became OSU's head track coach in 1935 and his teams won many titles,
including 17-straight Missouri Valley Conference team championships when the
school was in that league. His 1954 cross country team won the national
collegiate title and his 1965 indoor track team was second at the national
collegiate championships. After leaving OSU , he helped coach the U.S. Army
track team.
