According to his Confederate pension claim made in Polk County, Florida Sept 22,1911, Benjamin F. Higgins. age 72, served in Company "G" 3rd North Carolina Infantry. Application states he was born March 25,1839 in an unreadable county in North Carolina. Application states he has lived in Florida since 1881.
He notes his service as enlisting at Jacksonville N.C. on July 7,1861 and was discharged on March 2,1865 at Elmyra New York. States he was captured near Wilderness Chuch Va. on May 12,1864.He also notes that he was wounded twice,1st at Chancellorsville VA and 2nd at Sharpsburg MD

Detailed in ordnance for month of August and up to Oct 17,1861. Appears on May/June 1862 roll as on extra detail as cook. On September 1862 ,notes he has been detailed to regimental band. Named to Roll of Honor per N.C. General Assembly resolution of December 20,1862. It notes he was from Guilford Co.,was age 24 at time of muster and was a volunteer. His name appears on a register of Prisoners of war at Point Lookout MD that arrived from City Point Va on April 4,1865,having been captured at Petersburg Va on April 2,1865. Released upon taking the Oath of Allegiance on June 13,1865.
Register notes his residence as New York City, NY, has a fair complexion, Auburn Hair, Blue eyes,5ft 7 in Tall.

He was mustered in on October 31, 1861 as a Private in Company "D", 33rd North Carolina Infantry for war. His name appears on list of captured soldiers from Fredericksburg, Va. Dec 13, 1862. He was paroled for exchange on Dec 14, 1862. He was admitted to C. S. A. General Hospital at Charlottesville, Va. on May 9, 1863 for a Vaccine Ulcer, then was transferred to General Hospital at Lynchburg, Va.  on May 10, 1863. COMPANY C -- This company was organized in Wayne and Lenoir Counties as Captain Guilford W. Cox's Independent Company of Bridge Guards, N. C. Troops.
The Atlantic and North Carolina Railroad ran from Raleigh to Goldsboro and through Lenoir county to New Berne and Morehead City. The eastern end of this railroad was occupied by Union troops for most of the War and Confederate troops pulled up rails and cross ties for most of the line east of Kinston. The Company was assigned to 13th Battalion on 19th May 1863 and designated Company C.

"Born in Burke County and resided in Rutherford County where he was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Rutherford County at age 29, March 29, 1862. Reported present in June-July, 1862. Reported present but sick in camp in November-December, 1862. Hospitalized at Wilmington on August 26, 1863, with colica. Returned to duty on September 6, 1863. Reported present through February, 1864. Last reported in the records of this company in July-September, 1864. Survived the war." (p. 219).
