Jan/Feb roll shows Andrew absent on furlough.
Name appears on a list of prisoners sent from City
Point Va to Point Lookout Md dated April 4,1865.
It notes he was captured at Petersburg Va. on April
2,1865. States he swore an oath of allegiance on and
release date of June 13,1865 at Point Lookout Md..

appears on a Provost Marshall record dated April 22,1865, of
Soldiers who surrendered at Appomattox Court House VA. on April
10,1865. Administered oath of allegiance and paroled same date and
place. Former residence noted as Baltimore MD, destination noted as
76 N. Calvert Street in same. A letter from the Lt Col. Wooley,
Provost Marshall in Baltimore MD dated April 26,1865 states: I have
the honor to report the arrest of Eugene Higgins, Private, Company
"N",2nd Virginia Infantry, a paroled Prisoner of War of Lee's Army.
This man left Baltimore and went south in May 1861,before going
south his residence was No. 76 N. Calvert St. this city.

Col. Richardson for 1 year. On Jan 1862 roll term of service
increased to 3 years. On Nov/Dec 1862 and Jan thru Aug 1863 rolls it
is noted that he is on daily duty with ambulance corp. Signature
appears on a list of paroled prisoners of war dated May 1,1863 and
sent to Washington D.C., states he was captured May 3,1863 at
Fredericksburg Va, forwarded to Ft. Delaware on May 7,1863. On
Nov/Dec 1863 roll listed again as on daily duty Ambulance Corp. On
roll dated Aug 8,1864 it is noted that he has been on sick furlough
since April 28,1864.On roll dated Sept 12,1864 it notes he is absent
wounded since July 30,1864.On Chimborazo hospital register dated Aug
1,1864.Name appears on a receipt for clothing at Chimborazo
Hospital, Richmond Va, Aug 4,1864. Returned to Company from Hospital
Sept 17, 1864. Next appears on list of soldiers,dated November
7,1864,that were received by Provost Marshall, Army of the
Potomac,as a deserter from the enemy. Forwarded to Washington to
take oath Nov 23,1864. Received at Washington on Nov 25,1864, took
the oath of Allegiance and transferred to N.Y. City.

Mrs. Emma J. Higgins, aged 74 years, a resident of Orange County for 44 years and a life long resident of
Virginia, applied for a Confederate widows pension for her husband's service in Cutshaw's Battalion, Peyton's
Battery of Artillery from Orange County*.Her husband, George Washington Higgins died June 9 1914 in
Orange County Virginia of Apoplexy. The application states they were married in Madison Mills Virginia
Dec.22,1882. Her county of birth is mentioned but is difficult to read.
A request dated Feb 4,1927 of the War dept in Washington by the Virginia pension board
shows: The records show that George W. Higgins (Capt Fry's
Company, Orange Artillery)

enlisted March 20, 1862 at Orange.
Muster roll Oct 31,1864 to Feb 28 1865. shows him present as 3rd

Marshall for 3 years or war. Appears as rank of private until May/June
1864 on which he is 5th Sergeant and listed as absent in hospital, from
June 22,1864, having been wounded. Name appears on a register of
beneficiaries of the "Association for the relief of maimed soldiers,
Richmond Va". It notes that he was wounded June 22,1864 at Battle of
Kennesaw Mountain. He was operated by Surgeon Hunt at Marietta Georgia
same day for his leg wound. It notes his residence as Cherry Lane,
Alleghany County, N.C. His name appears on a request for an artificial
limb dated January 30,1865.

A letter stating that H. Lot Higgins M.D. supplied
Medical & Surgical service from the last day of
January 1862 to the tenth day of March the same year
and is entitled to $162.00 a month for a total of
$216.00. He was paid on November 18,1863.
Letter states he was appointed Surgeon of 14th
Regiment Virginia Infantry Militia on December
12,1861.

Springfield Missouri,
From "History of Greene County, Missouri," St. Louis: Western
Historical Company, 1883.
Dr. Higgins is the son of Henry and Elizabeth (Balthis) Higgins, and
was born in Virginia in 1830. He received an academic course in
education, and received his medical education at Winchester College
and at the University at Baltimore, where he graduated in the spring
of 1853.In the spring of 1854, he went to Wardensville, West
Virginia, where he practiced his profession until 1872. In the
spring of 1874, he came to Missouri, and lived four years at
Graysonville, Clinton county. He then went to Iowa, and in October,
1882, he came to Springfield, Missouri. In June, 1861, he joined the
14th Virginia regiment as surgeon, and so remained until the close
of the war. He was married October 12th, 1858 to Miss Martha O.
Shull. He and his wife are members of the Presbyterian church.
Dr. Higgins' father was a minister of the church of the United
Brethren. He died when the doctor was a small boy. His mother died
before the civil war. Of a family of six children the doctor was the
third child.

Lucinda Higgins, aged 82 years old, born in Grayson County Virginia and a lifelong Virginia resident
applied for a Confederate widows pension May 30,1924 (approved July
17,1924) for her husbands service in the Company "G" 63rd Virginia Infantry.
She is currently living with her son Charles Higgins in Galax, Grayson
County, Virginia. Her application states she was married to her husband Hardin Preston
Higgins in ??? North Carolina May 17,1877.He died of cancer May 28,1897 in
Galax, Grayson County, Va.
A request on Jun 17, 1924 from the pension board to the War Dept in Washington D.C. returned the following
service record;
Harden P. Higgins, Private & Sergeant of Company "G" 63rd Virginia Infantry C.S.A. enlisted April 6,186? at
?ock Gap Va.
Appears on muster roll July & August 1864(last record on file)
Deserted Aug 15,1864 near Atlanta Georgia and reduced in ranks same day.
No further record is found.
Notice was sent of above finding to Mrs. Higgins' and she subsequently supplied
affidavits, to be added to the application file, from former comrades who served
with Harden P. Higgins in Company "G" 63rd Virginia Infantry and later (after summer of 1864) in Company
"C" 8th Virginia Cavalry and to attest that he was with them at surrender.

July 21,1864 of Pyemia. On a register,same hospital,
dated July 27,1864,lists his cause of death was
resulted from a gun shot wound of left arm and
shoulder with resection. Admitted May
4,1864.(conflicting information) Another register
states; Admitted in hosp. June 8,1864,wounded in
lines,
by a minie ball in shoulder, ball entered left half
inch acronium passing downwards and inwards, head and 3
inches of shaft of humerous resected on field, died
July 21,1864 of Pyemia.

duties and lost a leg. He acquired a black walnut post from the stair rail
leading to the Captain's cabin and used it as a walking stick. Wife was Mary F. Higgins. Died Dec. 19,
1924. Buried Mt. Zion Christian Church Cemetery in Crittenden.

I, John F. Higgins, enlisted as a Private in Company
"F" 9th Virginia (Artillery), being a sailor by occupation, I was transferred to the C.S. Steamer
Virginia (Merrimac) and was on her when she ran down the U.S. Frigate Cumberland and when she fought the
Monitor and until she was destroyed. I was then transferred to Drury's
Bluff, from there I was ordered to the C.S.S. Chickamauga and made one cruise on
her. I was then ordered to Battery Buchanan adjoining Fort Fisher and was wounded in the first battle at Fort
Fisher Dec 24,1864, losing the right leg above the knee, which was amputated by the surgeon during the fight
and I was carried next day to the hospital in Washington. About sixteen years ago i received $60.00
from the state, I have never received anything more. The leg I then purchased lasted nine
years. I now request to be allowed $60.00 towards paying for the leg I am
now using, which is fourth i have had to get.

On August 27,1934,(approved Sept 26,1934) Mrs. Mary S. Higgins*, age 73
years, a resident of Crittendon, Nansemond County, Virginia applied for a
Confederate widows pension for her husband's service
in the Confederate Army.
Her application states that she was born in Harford County Maryland and has lived in Virginia for 27
years. She states that she married John Francis Higgins on Jan 1, 1907 at Chestnut Hill Maryland by Rev.
G.R. Hodge. She states that he died of heart trouble Dec 19,1924 in Crittendon Virginia.

Company G. was enrolled at Green Bank, Pocahontas
County, in May 1861, and was mustered into service on
May 29. It then marched 35 miles to Huttonsville where
it was attached to the Thirty-first Virginia Regiment.
Captain James C. Arbogast, the first company
commander, was promoted to major and transferred to
replace Major J. H. Chenoweth who was killed at Fort
Republic on June 9, 1862, His successor was Sid
Ruckman who was promoted from second sergeant to first
lieutenant and assigned to company commander, at which
post he served until November, 1862, when he was in
turn replaced by Lieutenant Elisha Wilfong who
commanded the company after that date. In 1861 the
rolls show an aggregate of 5 officers 10 and 40
enlisted men.

William H. Higgins,63 years old and residing 1421 29th St. Richmond,
Henrico County, Virginia applied for a Confederate pension April 8,1908(approved Oct. 1908)
for his service in Colonel Murry's Battalion, Capt. Jones Battery of Pamunkey Artillery. His application
states he was born in New Kent County Virginia and has lived in Richmond for four years. He notes that his
disabilities are Catarch of Stomach and rheumistism and hasn't been able to work for four years. He states
that he suffered with thyphoid pneumonia while he served in the confederate army.
According to his application he entered service in Yorktown,Va and served for three year at left service
at Lee surrender at Appomattox VA

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Higgins, aged 76 years, having been born in New Kent County Virginia and a lifelong
resident of Virginia, currently living with her daughter at 2120 Grayland Ave in
Richmond, Henrico County, applied for a Confederate widows pension, March 9,1934,(approved Mar.27,1934) for her husband's
service in Company "K" 56th Virginia Infantry under Captain Harrison.
Her husband, William Andrew Higgins died Jan 26,1909 in Richmond Va. of stomach trouble. According to her
application she states that they were married June of 1875 by a Baptist preacher named Wallace.

On June 6,1908,Sarah E. Higgins, aged 68 years, and a resident at 2514 Venable
Street, Richmond, Henrico County, Virginia, having been a resident of this city
for 43 years and a resident of Virginia all her life, applied for a
pension (approved Oct 1908) for her husband's service in Company "K" 56th Virginia
Infantry of Pickett's Division. She states in her application that William F. Higgins died Sept. 11,
1896 at the Confederate Soldier's Home in Richmond. She and he were married in 1869 by Reverend
J.S. Parkinson in New Kent County Va. She having been born in the same county.
The application also list as witnesses Joseph Higgins, Archer Higgins and William H. Higgins.
