BY THE AUTHOR: In presenting this record of the Higgins family of which I belong to my various relatives, I hope it will not only be of use and pleasure but have a tendency to link together those who are of the same blood, although never seen by each other and perchance this little book may aid us in seeking out those of our kin, should we by chance or otherwise be in the vicinity where they may reside.

I have always had a pride in my Green Mountain ancestry and  through the untiring energy and patient care of cousin SARAH HIGGINS I am enabled to furnish this little book to those who will prize it.

Tradition states that prior to the Revolutionary war there lived in some of the colonies three brothers by the name of Higgins. Where they hailed from I am unable to ascertain. They entered service in the Revolution  became separated, and never since knew of each others whereabouts.

The first we learn definitely of our family is that Samuel Higgins and his family removed from Killingsworth, Connecticut to Castleton, Vermont, in the year 1781; from thence to Benson, Rutland County, Vt., in 1788. The name of his first wife is unknown. The name of his second wife is Temperance Kelsey. Samuel Higgins died June 30th,1811,in the 68th  year of his age. Temperance, second wife of Samuel Higgins, died Feb. 6th ,1831, aged 73 years.

Later he served on board a privateersman. He was at the battle of Monmouth, the battle of Saratoga, and the surrender of Burgoyne, and was with the expedition commanded by General Sullivan against the Indians in New York.
