Pinkney Higgins
Uncle Pink Higgins Dies Suddenly At His Home J. P. Higgins died suddenly at 6 o´clock Sunday morning
at his ranch home on Cat Fish, and the remains were
interred Monday in Spur Cemetery. He had been
suffering for some time of heart trouble, and his
death, though not a surprise to interested friends,
was unexpected at this time. Saturday afternoon he and
his family were in Spur greeting their friends, and
apparently he was in good health as usual. He was
about 65 years old.
Uncle Pink Higgins was born in Alabama [Georgia] and
while a babe in arms his parents came to Texas,
settling near Lampasas in 1848. In the early history
and reconstruction days of Texas, Uncle Pink Higgins
became a noted character and in later years he was a
distinguished citizen. In the early days when the only
recognized law was the "the survival of the fittest,"
Uncle Pink played a leading part in events of
reconstruction and maintaining right and justice, and
in doing so numerous encounters in feuds and factions
resulted, the recounting of which would make
interesting history of reconstruction days in Texas,
and the events in the past life of our honoured and
lamented citizen today would read more like romance
than fact.
About fifteen years ago Uncle Pink Higgins came with
his family to this section of the country, settled and
established a farm and ranch home on Cat Fish where he
resided until his death.
Uncle Pink was known personally and by reputation over
a greater portion of Texas, and his friendship was as
wide as his acquaintanceship. He was a man true to his
friends, true to his ideals and at all times was a man
among men. Throughout the sixty five years his life
was typical of real Western manhood, and in every
instance stood in defence of the right, promoted just
ice and the effectual service rendered to the country
and to civilization by Uncle Pink Higgins will be long
remembered and his name honoured by Texas citizenship.
We knew Uncle Pink personally and intimately, loved
and appreciated him as a real man, and in his passing
to the Unknown Beyond we feel confident that whatever
may be in that Future he has earned and deserves an
exalted place among the immortals.

Higgins Family of Tarrant Texas
Inquiry Billie Marie Higgins Preston
BPreston1 AT hot.rr.com
Where did your Higgins ancestor come from? Ireland,
England, Kentucky, Ga, TN. Settled in Texas
I can trace back to my Great Grand Father, John Washington Higgins. (I'm 75, so that is a good ways
back) However have no info on his father. My great
grandfather was born in Roane County, TN in 1841 and
married Louisa J. Hale. Have been unable to locate
anything on his mother and father.
She also adds;
Charlie Alvin always went by Bill because his father,
Robert Jonathan Higgins, was called Bob. and
Henry
Etta was always called Etta.
Lillie Marie went by
Marie. And of course
I was Billie Marie.
Robert
Jonathan was the son of John Washington Higgins and
Louisa Judy Hale. And I'm stopped right there. I
know all of my Grandfather Robert (Bob) Higgins family
and who they married, etc. but have nothing on my
Great Grandfather's name back in Tennessee and
Kentucky or Georgia. I did find the piece about
George Albert, who was John Washington's brother, but
can't seem to locate anything else about their names
or where they came from, except I always understood
from Ireland.

Oak Hill Cemetery (Texas Historical Marker)
Hartwell Fountain sold ten acres of land to the City of Lampasas in 1872, to establish this cemetery. Originally known as City Cemetery, it was renamed Oak Hill Cemetery in 1908. The Ladies Cemetery Association, a group of concerned Lampasas women maintained the cemetery from 1891 to 1948, when the city assumed responsibility. Among those buried here are local pioneers, prominent business people, veterans of wars including the Texas Revolution and the Civil War, and their descendants. (1992)
