MOBBERLEY (St Wilfrid), a parish, in the union of ALTRINCHAM, hundred of BUCKLOW, Northern Division, of the county of
CHESTER, 2 miles (E N E) from Nether Knutsford; containing 1271 inhabitants. The manufacture of cotton is carried on here in a large factory.
The parish, which comprises about 10,000 acres, is divided into three baronies, for each of which in distinct court is held annually by its lord.
The living is a rectory,valued in the king's books at L 23.3.4(23 pounds,3 shillings and 4 pence), present net income is L524: it is in
the patronage of Mrs MALLORY. The church, which is very ancient, has a rich screen, the remains of the rood-loft; and some stone stalls
in the chancel; it was thoroughly repaired and the tower rebuilt of stone in 1533, at the expense of SIR JOHN TALBOT.
There are places of worship for Independents and Wesleyan Methodists.
The free school, founded in 1659 by the Rev WILLIAM GRIFFIN, was endowed by him with the interest of L210.
A Priory of Black Canons was founded here in 1206 by PATRICK de MOBBERLEY, in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary
and St Wilfrid; but being endowed with property in which the founder had only a life interest, it existed only for a short time.

* Dedicated to St Wilfred (who was the Archbishop of YORK who died in anno 708) Parish registers begin in 1578.
*There is almost a complete series of very valuable charters given by Mr Ormerod, relating to MOBBERLEY PRIORY. which were
unknown to Sir Peter Leycester, and which have thrown much light upon the origin of this foundation,and the families
connected with it.
One third of the moiety of the Manor possessed by the MOBBERLEY"S has descemded to Ralph Leycester (Lister) of
Toft, Esq from his ancestor Ralph Leycester, Esq. living 3nd Richard II.1379, whose father John Leycester, was nephew and
heir of RALPH de MOBBERLEY on 1359.
In the year 1206, PATRICK de MOBBERLEY founded here a small Augustine Priory, and endowed it with half the Rectory,
the other half being afterwards granted to the Priory by WILLIAM de MOBBERLEY. Sir GILBERT de BARTON, LORD OF
MOBBERLEY, granted his entire demesne of MOBBERLEY and the Advowson of the Priory, to the Canons of
St Mary's Priory at Roucester. This was between 1228 and 1240.
The Advowson was, however, in 1299 vested again in WILLIAM de MODBURLEGH ( Mobberley)
This is locate in Macclesfield Deanery in the Archdeaconry of Chester.(These are all Ecclesiastical Districts)
