History of Religion in Missouri

History of Missouri's
Churches & Religion History

Some early Missouri families had affiliations with a church while many didn't even though they were believers. As Missouri became more and more settled, more people joined organized religious groups. Some of the major denominations right before the Civil War included:  Methodist, Baptist, Christian Disciples, Regular Presbyterian, Cumberland Presbyterian, Roman Catholic. Lutheran, Union, and Episcopal. There were very small numbers of Jews, Unitarians, and Mormons in the states.
As noted earlier, early settlers had no formal alliances with a church. Some were even anti-religious including those who lived in river towns and the upper class sophisticates of St. Louis.

History of Religion

Missouri's history is closely allied with the progress of religion in America. Most of the denominations were quick to organize in Missouri even when it was a territory. There are some famous historic churches in the state. For example, in Cape Girardeau County, Old Bethel Church, organized in 1806 was the first Baptist Church west of the Mississippi River. A monument marks the spot. The oldest Episcopal Church in Missouri was founded in St. Louis in 1819.
The Benedictine Convent in Clyde is an outstanding ecclesiastical point in the state. The chapel of the convent contains many works of arts including mosaics and a jeweled monstrance. The chapel was built at a cost of more than one million dollars.
An old monastery near Perryville in Perry County was built in 1827 and is still partly standing. This religious group was part of Lord Baltimore's colony.
St. Charles County has a Catholic school which was built in 1821. The Borromeo Church in St. Charles was established in 1792.
The Mormons came early to Missouri where they settled near Kansas City. They finally were driven out of Missouri by those opposing their practices. They have returned to the original spot and have built a church in Independence under the auspices of a reorganized group of their denomination.
The first Disciples of Christ Church west of Mississippi River was in Howard County, near Fayette, in 1816.
Over eighty denominations are reported in the first government census of religions made in 1936. There were a total of 6,016 churches in Missouri with 1,390,869 members. The Methodists are the leading religious group with the Baptists second and Disciples of Christ third. In 1936, there were 5,327 churches, valued at $87,496,420.
