LATE ACCOUNT

OF THE

MISSOURI TERRITORY

COMPILED FROM NOTES DURING A TOUR THROUGH THAT COUNTRY IN 1815, AND A TRANSLATION OF LETTERS FROM A DISTINGUISHED FRENCH EMIGRANT, WRITTEN IN 1817

BY D.T. MADOX

AUTHOR OF THE MORAL AND POLITICAL DISCOURSE ON WAR

PARIS, KY

PRINTED FOR THE AUTHOR

BY JOHN LYLE

1817

This small pamphlet first printed in 1817 in Kentucky, represents an early account of the Missouri Territory. Few copies have survived.  Madox recounts his observations made during a trip through the area in 1815 along with a "translation of letters from a distinguished French emigrant, written in 1817. " It is not possible to distinguish from the text which are Madox's observations and which came from the "French emigrant." At the time of Madox's trip, the Missouri Territory included the entire area of the Louisiana Purchase north of the new State of Louisiana. Madox describes conditions and opportunities in what are today the States of Arkansas and Missouri but with major emphasis on the area between and on the Arkansas and Missouri Rivers.
