Notes for JESSE N. WOODWARD:

Jessie's name is on the Civil War Veteran's Monument - Glenwood, Iowa. His Civil War records show he when he enlisted at Eldora, Iowa in Co. A, 12th Iowa Infantry, on October 1, 1861, he was 5'7 1/2" tall, light complexion, blue eyes, auburn hair.
He was present at roll calls the first three months, was "not stated" in January and February 1862, and sick from March 28 to his discharge July 11, 1862 at Corinth, Mississippi. He spent three months at a hospital in Cairo, Ill, according to his military records. His 1870 pension application said he was at a hospital in Savanah, Tenisee about the first of March. He then went to Mound City, Ill for treatment. The brigade surgeon's statement of July 11, 1862 at Corinth said that he was taken sick at Burton Barracks. (the surgeon said Jessie had been a farmer prior to enlistment)

His pension application was verified by Perry Hadley and Joseph R. Hinshaw of Hardin County. Neighbors N. Dillion and A. Dillion said they had known him five years before the 1861 enlistment, and "intimately acquainted with said Woodward for five or six years after he was discharged". Jessie wrote in 1870 that Dr. Eli Jessup was the family physician in his father's family, and he was never called more than twice in the space of fifteen years. "And Dr. Eli Jessup is now dead and has been for several years".
