Generation No. 1

1.  SAMUEL M.8 WOODWARD  (SAMUEL S.7, WILLIAM6, ABRAHAM5, WILLIAM4, RICHARD3, RICHARD2, EDWARD1) was born 12/15/1829 in Morgan County, Indiana1, and died 11/16/1886 in Dell Rapids, Dakota Territory2.  He married (1) MARY HINSHAW3 2/07/1850 in Henry County, Iowa, daughter of WILLIAM HINSHAW and MATILDA DOANE.  She was born 2/12/1833 in Tennessee4, and died 12/20/1860 in Hardin County, Iowa4.  He married (2) EMMA ROSALIA BENBOW5 4/26/1866 in New Providence, Hardin County, Iowa6, daughter of CARVER BENBOW and LUCINDA RUBOTTOM.  She was born 1/13/1842 in Park County, Indiana7, and died 7/04/1914 in White Lake, Aurora, South Dakota.

Notes for SAMUEL M. WOODWARD:
5'9" tall, grey eyes, auburn hair, light complexion per enlistment papers.
Have transcription of his diary courtesty Pat Engebretson (for a photo of the diary see
Nadine's Civil War page and use the back button on your browser to return here.  The diary starts September 15, 1862 at Eldora Hardin County, Iowa, and ends March 7, 1865 at Cairo, Illinois.  February 28, 1865 mentions stopping by brother William A. Woodward's home at Newton, Iowa.

Story of the Thirty Second Iowa Infantry Volunteers by John Scott, 1896, "We arrived at Vicksburg on the 6th, a number of the boys being completely worn out.  The doctors believed it best to lease some of them at the hospital, but they thought it very hard to be thus left on the way home, and their comrades determined that it should not be.  Samuel M. Woodward, of Co. F, was ordered to the hospital, but some of his comrades said, "No, he shan't be left; he shan't be left.  He stood by us, and now we will stand by him."  They hired an old darkey with a carriage, took him to the river and carried him on board the steamer Von Phul.

Hardin County Probate Records - Book A, page 125 S. M. Woodward appointed guardian for minor children of Mary Woodward, deceased.  Samuel petitioned the court to sell land belonging to said minors - undivided shares of NW/4 of Sec 23 & N part of SW/4 of NW/4 of Sec 23, T72N, R7W

Curiously the 1880 census shows all children born Iowa except for Eora (Evangeline} age 6, born Dakota Territory - apparently they may have gone on the 1872 gold rush to South Dakota as did other Woodward descendants.  And as other descendants did, returned disappointed to Iowa.

1860 census in Hardin County, Iowa as S. M. Woodworth.  Abigail Shelley Woodward, his mother is with them, age 63.  For more on the parents of Samuel M. Woodward see
Nadine's page on Sam and Abby Woodward and use the back button on your browser to return here or click on the Samuel M. Woodward link on that page.
