Simon Woodward , born about 1844 in Keokuk County, Iowa, was the son of William A. Woodward and Ruth Hadley of Jefferson County, Tennessee, Hendricks-Morgan Counties, Indiana, and Keokuk-Hardin Counties, Iowa. He was grandson of William and Elizabeth Millikan Woodward.
He married SARAH E. JANEWAY.

Simon was in these battles in the Civil War - Horse Creek, White Stone Hill, Bad Lands, Little Blue, Julesburg, Mud Springs, Rush Creek and Tahkahokutah. Sgt. Woodward previous to being reduced was St. to the guard with orders to dismount anyone who approached this area...he dismounted his commanding officer in a mud puddle for which the officer was going to court martial him. Rather than have a court martial appear on his record he took the reduction to ranks instead. War of the Rebellion, Vol. 1
