Mathias LORSCHEIDER was born in 1843 in Germany. It is not known exactly when he immigrated to the US. There is some evidence that he may have immigrated as a boy with other family members in 1853, but connections to the other LORSCHEIDERS found in Lake County, Indiana have not yet been proven. As to whether he immigrated with other family members or as a young man in the early 1860's is yet to be determined.; What is known as fact at this point is that he settled in Lake County, Indiana and there in 1863 he married Mary Ann HEISER. Mary was also from Germany and was born in 1844.

Mathias and Mary had 6 known children: John W., Peter P., Edward N., Rosa M., Helen K. and Anna M. All of them were born in Lake County, Indiana, some of them in Crown Point, located in Center Township, while others reported their location of birth as occurring in Hanover Township. It appears that while Mathias and his family remained in Lake County while they lived in Indiana, they moved more than once within Lake County.

Mathias Lorscheider Sheomaker AdvertisementMathias was a hard working and enterprising man. In the 1870 US Federal census Mathias is listed as a boot and shoe maker, residing with his family in Hanover Township, Lake County, Indiana. By 1875 he had opened his own establishment according to an advertisement in the Lowell Star, published in Lowell, Lake County, Indiana on 2 January 1875.  The size of the advertisement indicates that he must have been a successful shoe maker and had opened a new shop in Lowell, Indiana.

Additionally there was this mention of his workmanship in the same edition and page of the Lowell Star:

"--It doesn't cost you a cent to go into Mat. Lorscheider's establishment and see the biggest stock of good leather ever brought into Lake County. And it don't cost much to leave your measure for as neat a boot or complete a shoe as was ever made in America. Remember that, now."

By 1880, however, the US Federal Census reported that Mathias was selling agricultural implements. It is unknown if his years as a shoemaker did not continue successfully or if he sold his business in an effort to try something new.

The 1880 census finds Mathias and family residing in Crown Point, Lake County, Indiana. While they were still in Lake County, it indicates that Mathias had relocated his family at least 3 times in the decade between 1870 and 1880.

Sometime after the 1880 census and prior to 1887, Mathias and his family, with the exception of Edward, had moved from Indiana to Columbus, Ohio where he was employed as a General Agent for the Minneapolis Harvester Works, according to the 1888 Columbus, Ohio City Directory. Edward had remained in Indiana, living in Indianapolis and was employed as a bookkeeper by J. S. Farrell & Company, according to the 1889 City Directory for Indianapolis, Indiana.  Sometime during 1888, the family, with the exception of Peter, moved to Rochester, Monroe County, New York as they are listed in the 1889 Rochester, New York, City Directory. Mathias is not listed as he died in May of 1889 and is buried in Rochester in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

Edward continued working as a bookkeeper and it may have been that his knowledge of bookkeeping was an advantage for him in later years when in 1902 he started his own business, the E. N. LORSCHEIDER COMPANY, manufacturer of paper boxes. Additionally, the companies he worked for as both bookkeeper and later, as manager, were box manufacturers.

On 3 February 1892 in St. Joseph's Roman Catholic church, Edward was joined in marriage to ELIZABETH JULIA HAHN, daughter of Karl HAHN and Franziska STEPHANY. Edward and Elizabeth had eight children, seven of whom reached adulthood: Edward Mathias, Lillian Maria, Helen Antoinette, Charles Hahn, Matthias, Frances Elizabeth, Joseph Phillip and Louis Charles. Son Charles Hahn LORSCHEIDER died at the age of 5 and is buried beside his mother in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in the HAHN Family plot.

Edward and family moved to Mt. Vernon, New York for a short period between 1899 and 1901 where he continued to work in the paper box manufacturing business. Upon his return to Rochester, Edward had moved into the sales division for his employer, The BUEDINGEN MANUFACTURING COMPANY. It was only one year later that he had formed his own company, the E. N. LORSCHEIDER COMPANY which was located on Water Street until a fire destroyed the building in 1907. The company was then relocated to Andrews Street.

In 1914 Edward formed a partnership with Frederick SCHANG and the company was renamed the LORSCHEIDER-SCHANG COMPANY. In 1924 the location was changed once again to N. Fitzhugh Street and in 1944 it became the BARTOLD-SCHANG COMPANY.

By 1910, Edward and Elizabeth were separated and later divorced. Sometime after, Edward married OLIVE PARCELS. According to newspaper accounts, Edward had obtained a divorce from Elizabeth in Reno, Nevada, and then married Olive, but there was some question as to the validity of the divorce. Edward and Olive did not have any children of their own. They lived for a time in New Jersey and then returned to Rochester. Elizabeth remained in Rochester and raised her children alone.

Edward died in December 1921 of nephritis. He was buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery and according to cemetery records, in July 1923, his remains were removed to New York City, New York. The bulk of his estate was left to his wife, Olive. Four of his children, Frances, Matthias, Joseph and Louis each received $250.

Edward's brother John W. joined the firm of E. N. LORSCHEIDER COMPANY in 1903 as a salesman and by 1905 was made Secretary. Prior to that he worked in sales for various employers. John married HETTA KING in 1892. The marriage did not last and in 1897 Miss KING was subsequently charged with bigamy, it being stated that she was still the wife of Eugene F. DERBY at the time of her marriage to John W. LORSCHEIDER. In 1929 John married once again to Laura MCMICHAEL. John did not have any children.

After the death of his brother Edward, John remained employed by the LORSCHEIDER-SCHANG COMPANY in the position of Secretary and continued there until his death in 1935. John is buried in White Haven Memorial Cemetery in Perinton, New York.

Their sisters, Helen and Anna did not marry. Helen was quite active in the business world. Both Helen and Anna are buried with their parents in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

Rosa married Edwin T. SULLIVAN in 1893 in Rochester, Monroe County, New York. They had two daughters, Helen and Katherine. In the 1910 census the SULLIVAN family was living on Normandy Avenue. Two of their neighbors were Elizabeth HAHN LORSCHEIDER'S brothers, WILLIAM HAHN and CHARLES HAHN.

Helen SULLIVAN married Austin S. LAVIGNE in Rochester in 1926. Helen and Austin had one known son, Pierre. Austin is buried in the SULLIVAN Family plot in Holy Sepulchre, but it appears that Helen was living in Texas at the time of her death and is buried there along with her son. Katherine never married. She was employed by the Rochester School District as a teacher and died in Rochester. She is buried with her parents in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

Edward and Elizabeth (HAHN) LORSCHEIDER'S son, Edward Mathias LORSCHEIDER married Elsie Ottilie BRAYER in Rochester in 1920. Elsie was the daughter of Frank Nicholas BRAYER and Mary Agnes WEISS. They had several children. Edward's cousin, Adelaide Ann SCHAEFFER, daughter of Agatha HAHN and George C. SCHAEFFER, married Elsie's brother, Walter George BRAYER.

Their daughter Lillian Marie LORSCHEIDER married Joseph Vincent HEINZLE in 1942 in Rochester. Lillian is buried in the HAHN Family plot with her mother, sister Helen and brother Charles. Helen never married.

Son Matthias LORSCHEIDER married Mary GRAHAM in 1937 in Rochester. His sister Frances married twice, first to Herbert E. GERSTNER in Rochester in 1927 and after Herbert's death in 1942, she married Oscar J. BOTT in 1945, also in Rochester.

Their son Joseph Phillip LORSCHEIDER married Georgia E. PLATT in 1939 in Havana, Cuba. And lastly, Louis Charles LORSCHEIDER, the youngest son of Edward and Elizabeth (HAHN) LORSCHEIDER, married Mary Lewis in Rochester in 1937.
