THE EVENING DEMOCRAT, FORT MADISON, IOWA
Friday, September 11, 1936
Completes Task as Democrat Carrier
Arthur G. (Sonny) Maxwell, who started carrying and delivering paper
in Montrose for the Democrat April 1, 1929, completes his work in that
capacity this week and will enroll as a student in Carthage college in
Carthage, Ill. Now 18 years old, Sonny was but 10 years old when he
started.
In this picture Sonny is seen delivering a copy of the Democrat to one
of his patrons, Mrs. F. Lee Davis, at her Rose Mont home just on the
out skirts of Montrose. Sonny always likes to deliver papers to the
Davis home, for Mrs. Davis always has been solicitous. When the
Democrat was publishing a Sunday morning paper, Mrs. Davis always
insisted Sonny stop in for a hot breakfast.
Sonny's delivery route covers a distance of four and one-half miles,
which means he traveled 1,408 miles a year. His seven and on-half
years of service have taken him over a distance of 10,560 miles,
almost the equivalent of halfway around the earthI
