12 January 1928

George M. COULTER was born in Montrose 25 April 1879 and died at his home in Clay Center, Kansas, 22 December 1927. He was the youngest son of Andrew and Maria COULTER. He married Miss Resta FIFER, who with their three daughters, survive. Mrs. Ann CUMBER and Miss Hattie COULTER are all the surviving members of the COULTER family of nine children. The funeral services were conducted and the remains laid to rest in the home where he spent the larger part of his life.

W.J. REIMBOLD an old acquaintance to many of the Montrose folks died at his home in Nauvoo.

There is an article about John REIMBOLD in this issue. States what he done and at the bottom of the article it says that Montrose wishes to join his many friends across the mighty river in sympathy to the bereaved family.

The Montrose Library Association was organized Tuesday February 7 at the home of Dr. and Mrs. E.M. BUCK. Thirty people being present. Prof. JOHNSTON acting as chair man, Miss CASEY and Miss MITCHELL of Keokuk and Rev. POOL gave very interesting talks on library work and how to precede in the work. Officers elected were, Rev. POOL Pres., Mrs. E.M. BUCK, V.P., Helen REED Treasure, Mrs. E.T. PRICE, Sec.

Mr. and Mrs. ADKISSON are parents of a girl, Lamanda Marie, 2 February 1928.

The new school is finished.

We have received word of the death of Earl BUCK, of Chicago. He is son of Dr. E.M. BUCK of this city.

Mr. Earl BUCK, son of Dr. E.M. BUCK of this city died at a hospital in Chicago, Wednesday. He was born in Keokuk, about 35 years ago. After the death of his mother, he lived with the grandparents in Keokuk. He married Miss Florence BURK and had one daughter. He served in France. Survived by, wife, a four year old daughter, Lois Marie, his father, two brothers, Theodore of Keokuk, Carroll of Ottumwa, three sisters, Mrs. Euhlia? MOREHOUSE, of Ottumwa, Mrs. Harold PRICE and Miss Myrtle BUCK of Montrose.

Gerald A. HORTON, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred B. HORTON, was born at Montrose 22 April 1903 and died 19 February 1928. Leaves, parents, one brother, Lloyd Eugene, age 11, one sister, Waunita VAUGHN, died in infancy, also surviving is his aged grandfather, Jefferson WOSTEN of Montrose. Buried Montrose.

Mrs. Lucinda W. SPAIN, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Kate CALHOUN of Lennox, Ca. Leaves three daughters and two sons. Mrs. SPAIN was the widow of John SPAIN. Funeral in L.A. Ca.

Mrs. Harriet GERBOTH, former resident of Montrose, died at the home of her son, Albert in Davenport, Iowa. Buried Montrose. Harriet PATTERSON was 89. She married Henry GERBOTH at Montrose, he died ten years ago. Leaves, two sons; Albert of Davenport and Charles, who lives in the west, Edward, another son, is deceased.

Mrs. Grace SKINNER of Montrose, a life long resident of Lee county, died at hospital in Keokuk last Thursday. She was born 15 October 1883 in Montrose, the daughter of William and Rachel DROLLING CLOUD. She married David SKINNER at Montrose, in 1903 and had eight children, two of whom have gone before her. Leaves, husband, parents; Mr. and Mrs. William CLOUD of Montrose, children; Mrs. Roy CARR, Mrs. Claude MCGIN, both of Keokuk, Mrs. William SLIGHT, Claude SKINNER, Alice SKINNER, and George SKINNER all of Montrose. Four brothers; Cliff CLOUD of Montrose, George CLOUD of Keokuk, Gillis CLOUD, of Argyle, Clayton CLOUD, of Ca. one sister, Mrs. Ada DERR of Argyle. Buried Montrose.

Word received here of the death of Mr. REEDER MAXFIELD on Wednesday.

Mrs. Elizabeth PARKER HUNT, died at the home of her brother, Dr. James W. PARKER, Peoria, Illinois, 22 March 1928. She was born in Nauvoo, 27 March 1872, the second child of Dr. Roland M. PARKER and Dr. Jane A. PARKER nee SWAN. She married John HUNT, a promising young attorney, son of a prominent pioneer family. Survived by one daughter, Anne Parker HUNT, her brother, Dr. James W. PARKER and his family. Buried beside her parents in Springdale cemetery, Peoria, Illinois.

R.A. GIBBS, 74, a retired business man and former post master, died at his home, Sun. Buried West Hill cemetery. Mr. GIBBS was a native of Landsboro, Ma. and was born 25 November 1853. He came to Sherman in 1886 as cashier of the Texas and Pacific R.R. On 17 February 1880, he married Miss Alice REEVES of Montrose, bringing his wife here as a bride. Survived by one son, R.M.GIBBS of Texarcana, one granddaughter, Miss Claudia Alice GIBBS of Burbank, Ca. Mr. GIBBS was one of Shermans civic leaders, and helped to put over every movement for the benefit of the city since his arrival. Must be in Tx.

Work has started on the Coleman road.

Lyda Arabell KNOX was the oldest daughter of Morrison A. and Susan Lamont KNOX of Alleghaney, Pa. When a child , she was sent to Sweelly Tilt, Pa. To a private boarding school, then to finishing her schooling at Allaghaney High School. She married Lorenzo R. MCCANN of Mercer Co. Pa. In 1863, and had seven children, four of which preceded here in death. Her husband preceded her five years ago. The children surviving; Mr. J.H.MILES of Montrose, and Mr. Wm. K.MCCANN of Montrose, and Theodore R. of Aurora, Illinois. Buried in Aurora.

Rufus Henry YOUNKIN died at his home Tuesday. He was one of the oldest residents of Montrose and would have been 92, had he lived until August. He was born in Pa. 25 August 1836, the son of Joseph and Susan MEEK YOUNKIN. Came to Montrose about 60 years ago. On 31 March 1870, he married Blanche SAWYER at Montrose and had six children, three of whom preceded him in death. Surviving are; J.S. YOUNKIN, of Wichita, Ks., Ralph A. of Roy, Wa., and Mrs. Harry WARDLOW of Montrose.

The first of last week some excitement was stirred about the mad-dog in the town. A dog belonging to Frank SILVERS, had gone mad and before it was found out he had bitten three people. They were little Maryon SMITH, daughter of R.N. SMITH, Earl DAVIS and Wm. CRESSWELL, all of whom are taking treatments for the wound. The dog was killed and the head sent to Iowa City. It had a bad case of rabies.

Mr. J. W. Allinder, an employee on a boat at Foley, Mo. was killed in a one car accident last Sunday.

Jack KENNEDY, son of our postmaster, is now a full fledged cadet at the Annapolis Naval Academy.

Miss Margaret KITE of this city married Ernest CURTIS, also of this place, 18 June 1928. They were married in Illinois. Groom is son of Mr. and Mrs. S.L. CURTIS. Will live in Montrose.

Loren BINDEWALD was born near Sutter, Illinois, 7 October 1900, the son of Chas F.? and Alice ASH BINDEWALD. Came with his parents to Montrose when one. He married Eunice THOMPSON 24 December 1927, Leaves wife, parents, Mr. and Mrs. C.T.? BINDEWALD, two brothers, Malcom of Bettondorf, and Raymond of Ft.Madison, two sisters, Mrs. Louis ARNS, of Ft. Madison, Mrs. Ernest STANLEY of Bettondorf. Buried Ft. Madison.

Miss Gladys WILSON married Frank HARMON, 6 August 1928. Will live on farm near town.

23 August 1928

Wilson NOLES died at the hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana, 21 August, 1928. He was born east Keithsburg, 8 December 1850, the son of James and Sarah NOLES. He married Miss Elizabeth HAMMA? in Hamilton, Illinois on 10 November 1871 and for the past forty-five years their home has been Montrose. Mr. NOLES wa the inventor of the famous NOLES water filter which he patented about thirty years ago. Survived by wife and four children; Mrs. Chas. MINER, of Ft.Madison, Mrs. Ben STRANGE, Mrs. Lois SMITH and Miss Vada NOLES all of Montrose. One daughter, Mrs. Ella ANDERSON preceded him in death a few years ago.

30 August 1928

Augustine METZINGER, wife of W.H. METZINGER, died at her home in Keokuk, Wednesday. Leaves husband and five children; Wm. H. and James METZINGER of Montrose, Charles of Keokuk, and Mrs. Peter COSTELLO and Mrs. Carl BREAKBILL of Keokuk. One child preceded her in 1905. Buried Oakland in Keokuk.

Ella Melissa STULTZ, the daughter of Jane and Joseph STULTZ, was born 9 October 1852. She married to Hugh KERR 25 December 1872 in Keokuk. He died 22 March 1888. Leaves five children; Mrs. S.L. CURTIS, Mrs. Effie LEFEVER, and Frank KERR, all of Montrose, Mrs. Nellie HUNTER, of Earlham and Edward H. KERR of Lincoln, Ne. Three sisters; Mrs. Anna WILSON of Keokuk, Rose GRAY, Deadwood, S.D. Mrs. Lily HAMLIN, of Las Vegas, N.M., two brothers; Charles of Chicago and Frank of Arkansas City, Ar., four grandchildren, Claude and Ernest CURTIS of Montrose, Ray KERR of Lincoln, Ne. and Robert HUNTER of Earlham. Buried Montrose.

13 September 1928

Fire destroys New Boston post office and store.

John Milles SKYLES was born in a small log house in Jefferson Twp. 21 May 1845, where he grew to manhood. He married to Nancy Ellen CLOUD, 9 March 1876 and had six children; Hanna CURTIS of Montrose, Ben of DesMoines, Edith LAMB of Ft.Madison, Mord of Mobile, Al., Lillian DAY, Kerrville, Tx., Harry of Astoria, Or., Nancy Ellen CLOUD SKYLES, his wife died 21 November 1906. Lived with his son, Ben until his death, 5 September 1928. Must have been buried at Montrose, as Joppa Lodge 136 Montrose had services at the grave.

Mr. and Mrs. Ralph JOHNSON have a new girl, born 11 September 1928.

Funeral of Mrs. J.A. HARMON, was held in the Presbyterian church here Tuesday.

Margaret Elaine THON, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold THON, died 19 October 1928. She was born 28 August 1928. Leaves parents, four grandparents, two great grandparents. Buried Montrose.

Miss Conchetta BROWN of Ft.Madison, married Claude R. CURTIS of this place. Living in Ft.Madison.

8 November 1928

Frank HARMON died at his home three miles northwest of here Saturday. He died of typhoid fever, his mother, and two sisters have it also. He was 20. He married Miss Gladys WILSON6 August 1928. Leaves, wife, parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd HARMON and five sisters, one grandmother, Mrs. Jane HAMILTON and grandfather, James HARMON. Buried Montrose.

Charles F. FRUEHLING was born near Luxemberg, Germany, 11 January 1840 and died 3 November 1928. He came to U.S.A. when 16, locating at Warsaw, Illinois. He married Miss Mary ORTH of Warsaw and had four children; W.H. FRUEHLING of Westington, S.D., Mrs. Mary PATTON, of Mont Vista, Co., Charles of Montrose and J.H. of Montrose. His wife died 21 June 1877. He served his country 3 years in the Civil War.

Miss Elizabeth JUDD died at her home Sunday. Her sister, Lillian JUDD, died last Spring and it is said that she mourned so that it contributed partly to her death. She was born at Allentown, Pa. In July 1863, the daughter of John and Christiana FISHER JUDD. Her father, who is an invalid, is the only surviving relative. Buried Montrose.

Miss Jessie Iola MARSHALL married John William SHAW on Saturday. Groom is son of John and Ida SHAW and has made his home in Montrose all of his life. Bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank and Amanda MARSHALL and has lived here the largest part of her life. Will live with groom's mother.

William Roy ANDERSON, died last Friday in New Orleans, La. Funeral services wre held from the Clements chapel in Ft.Madison, Iowa. He was born 6 July 1856 in Oskaloosa. He came to Ft.Madison when a small boy. Leaves threee sisters; Mrs. H. J. BUCK of Wever, Mrs. W.B.FREDERICK, and Mrs. Chas ECKSTRAND, both of Ft.Madison. Two nieces, Mrs. Frances KUBEBEH of Montrose. (didn't say who the other niece was.) He had gone to New Orleans to spend the winter and was returning from a short trip back to New Orleans on a ferry when in a heart attack he fell over and passed away almost instantly. He lived here for a short time during his boy hood.

Mr. and Mrs. John WYRICK a son born Thanksgiving.

Miss Cora Rose CRAWFORD, born 1 March 1868 in Glenwild, N.Y. has died at her home in Kansas City, Missouri, 13 December 1928. Survived by husband, James H. BEDDOW, two brothers, G.W. CRAWFORD, Thomas, Ok., J.U.CRAWFORD, Kansas City, Missouri, five sisters; Mrs. Etta COLLINS, Mrs. Lisle GRANT and Mrs. P.P. KNIGHT of Montrose, Mrs. D.D. WILSON, FtMadison, and Mrs. Mary FIFER of Burlington. Funeral services were in Kansas City.

Nancy Elizabeth LARKIN, the child of Mr. and Mrs. William SKINNER, was born in Montrose 15 October 1854, and died in Washington, Iowa, 14 December 1928. Married Chas SPEAKE of Montrose and had 12 children. The following relation are left; Sam SPEAKE, Acomo, Wa., Chas. SPEAKE, Montrose, John SPEAKE, Keokuk, Mrs. Ida LYONS, N.D., Mrs. May RAINES, Quincy, Illinois, Mrs. Lizzie SNIDLER, Muscatine, Iowa, Mrs. Helen PATTERSON, Washington, Iowa., Mrs. SPEAKE was later married to Mr. Levi LARKIN of Burlington, who survives.
