 Miss Laverne E. ORR married Floyd R. HANCOCK at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. E.S.ORR of Ft.Madison. Groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Mont HANCOCK of Montrose. Will make their home with the brides parents.

9 January 1930

Louis V. DUMENIL died at his home here, last Friday. He was born 28 February 1843 in Cincinnati, Ohio, son of Jean BAPTISTE and Frances Ballay DUMENIL. In May of 1853, he came with his parents to Keokuk, later they settled on a farm at Charleston. On 22 February 1880, he married Frances MAKINNEY, who survives him, together with one son, John D. of Keokuk and one daughter, Mrs. Marie HORNER of Montrose. One son, L.W. died five years ago. Moved to Montrose in 1918 from Argyle.

23 January 1930

John GLASSFORD a former resident of Montrose, died at his home three miles northwest of Charleston, Sunday. He was the son of John and Clara DORMA GLASSFORD, born 2 April 1887 in Montrose. On 28 December 1902, he married Miss Nora BROWN in Aneda, Iowa and had eight children, two preceded him in death. Leaves wife, six sons; Ralph, John D., Harley, Delbert, Carl and Max, and two daughters; Mrs. Howard DERR, of Keokuk, and Norma Gene, seven months old. His mother, a brother, Jesse GLASSFORD of Ft. Madison, a sister Mrs. William COOPER, also survive in addition to one grandson. Buried Montrose.

30 January 1930

Word was received by Mr. and Mrs. Fremont HANCOCK, of the sudden death of their son, Leonard HANCOCK, of Des Moines but formerly of Montrose. He and a companion had been hunting and was removing the guns from the car. In some ways the gun in the hand of the companion was discharged and Mr. HANCOCK was killed instantly. He was born in Montrose, Iowa in October 1901. He married an Ottumwa girl, who survives, also parents, and the following brother; Floyd and Ralph of Ft.Madison, Russell and Kenneth of Montrose and four sisters; Mrs. Oscar OWEN of Corydon, Iowa, Mrs. C.B.GRAY of Williamsburg, Iowa, Mrs. Lawerence DENMIRE of Sandusky and Elizabeth HANCOCK of Montrose.

Argyle suffered one of the greatest losses early Saturday, when F.J. BRODSKY'S general store and Levi BRODSKY'S creamery and fee store combined, burned the the ground.

Word has been received here of the death of Claude CLARK of Davenport, a former Montrose resident.

Samuel ALLISON, died at the home of Mr. and Mrs. James UTLEY, where he had been making his home for the past few weeks. He was born in Pa. 73 years ago and came to Lee county with his parents when he was a small boy. He is the last of a large family of children. Chas. REED, Mrs. William COMSTOCK of Montrose, are relatives. Buried in Montrose.

Mrs. Lucrbtia? HENRY, wife of Robert HENRY, died at her home yesterday. She was well known in Jacksonville having been in the millinery business in this city since 1884. The Henry Millinery business was located on the public square for many years, being in the Illinois Theater building at the time Mrs. HENRY retired from active business one year ago. She was born in Iowa, 14 November 1855, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas RAY. She came to Jacksonville 50 years ago. She married Robert E. HENRY, in this city 1 August 1887. Leaves husband, two sisters, Mrs. Frank CAULES and Mrs. George KIEL, all of this city. She was resident of Montrose for about twenty years and was known as Crete RAY. She had a sister Maggie RAY who married Geo. W. KIEL.

6 March 1930

Charles William BRUCE, a resident of Galland for the past twenty-two years, died at his home, Sunday. He was born in Sulliavan county, Missouri in 1864, the son of George and Jane REESE? BRUCE. He married in 1900 to Lucy HEIMER, who survives. Also surviving is on son, George, two brothers, Thomas of Carthage, Illinois, James of Cedar Rapids, one sister, Mrs. Hahhan LEWIS of Chillicothe, Illionois.

Joseph H. REED has received the sad news of the death of Mrs. Albert BRITTON of Taylor, Nebraska. The BRIITTONS were former residents of Lee county having resided on a farm near Viele. Crissa A. REED was born in Lee county 10 October 1855, the youngest child of Mirick W. and Phebe A. REED. She received her education in the rural schools of Jefferson Twp. and the old Riverside Institute, which stood on what is now known as Bluff Park at Montrose. Married Albert BRITTON about the year 1973(not my typo). He survives as do the following children; Mrs. Phebe BOLLI, Burwell, Nebraska, Will, Mitchell, Nebraska, Edwin McAllen, Tx., Mrs. Kate PENNINGTON, Rawlins, Wy., Joe , Cody, Wy. And Jack and Tim, Taylor, Nebraska.

George RENZ, a well known farmer of Lee county, died 7 April 1930 at age 82. He was the son of John M. and Frederica RENZ. J.G. RENZ was born in Germany 29 October 1848 and came to Keokuk in 1852 and has lived in this section all of his life. On 10 December 1874, he married Miss Louise WAHRER at Charleston and had nine children, seven boys and two girls, one son preceded him in death in 1927. Leaves, John, Fargo, N.D., Jacob of Donnellson, Edward of Charleston, Theodore of Charleston, Mrs. Lucy STERTZ of Keokuk, Herbert of Macomb, Illinois, Mrs. Esther CHANCE of Argyle, one brother, Jacob of Charleston. Buried Charleston.

1 May 1930

The body of Hubert B. WILLIAMSON, who was killed in an automobile accident in Pa., was brought to Keokuk last Sunday. Services were held at Sandusky with burial in Sandusky. Mr. WILLIAMSON'S grandfather, Elijah WILLIAMSON, established the church in which the services were held. He was married, she survives as well as two children, one sister, Mrs. L.D.BOYD of Sandusky, one brother, Lyman of Winnipeg, one sister, Mrs. Margaret WELTER, of Watertown, S.D. and a sister, Beatrice WILLIAMSON of Pasadena, Ca.

The 100th anniversary of the first school taught in Iowa will be held at Galland on Saturday 24 May 1930.

Friends of Clara FISHER WHITTON, some of whom knew her husband, will be saddened by the news of Mr. WHITTON'S death, which occurred in Tacoma, Washington, 19 May 1930. He was 72.

Mrs. W.B. FREDERICK, died at her home in Ft.Madison 14 May 1930 at age 71. Buried Elmwood cemetery. Frances ANDERSON, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B. F. ANDERSON, was born in Montrose 23 January 1859. She was the niece of Dr. J. M. ANDERSON and had lived in Lee county all her life. Survived by husband and one sister, Mrs. Halsey BUCK of Wever, Iowa. One half sister, Mrs. Jacob LEIGHTON, of Ninot, N.D. and two nieces; Mrs. Henry KUDEBEH of Montrose, and Mrs W. A. WALTERS of Wever, Iowa.

Albert MARSHALL, died at his home near Galland, Wednesday. Obit next week. (never found it)

Miss Ruby Belle WAGNER, married James Orville STOUVALL of St.Joseph, Missouri, at her aunts home in Montrose; Mr. and Mrs. John SAMSON. Wedding dinner was held at bride's parents; Mr. and Mrs. J. A. WAGNER in Montrose. Will live in Galesburg, Illinois.

26 June 1930

Mrs. Alice BINDEWALD has returned from Ft.Madison where she had been for several weeks at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Louis ARNS. They report the birth of a son born 28 May 1930 to Mr. and Mrs. ARNS, Richard Russell weighed 10lbs.

Mr. and Mrs. Harold GRAY, a new boy, born 2 June 1930, Harold Vincent. Mrs. GRAY is the former Edith GRAHAM of Montrose.

S.A. CARTER a former resident of Montrose, died at St.Louis last Thursday. He was born in Montrose 15 April 1853 and lived here until thirty years ago. Leaves three sons: Samuel Jr., Raymond and Emerson, all of St.Louis, three daughters, Miss Mildred CARTER and Mrs. Lucille HYDE, both of St.Louis and Mrs. Ellen GRIESENAU? Of Williamburg, Va., one sister, Mrs. Sarah MITCHELL of Keokuk. The body was brought to Keokuk.

Mrs. Grace JOHNESSEE WORKMAN, wife of the late Louis E.WORKMAN, former Boise business man, died at her home Sunday. She was born in Montrose 27 May 1871 and went to Id. from the Black Hills in August 1896. She was a school teacher. Leaves son Paul, sisters; Mrs. D.W. MCFADDEN of Bremerton, Washington, and Mrs. Fred V. TINKER of Boise, Id. Brothers; Samuel R. JOHNESSEE of Portland, Oregon and Frank E. of Boise.

Mr. and Mrs. Ben BEST of Columbus Junction a new son born 23 June 1930.

Mr. and Mrs. Ferd (may be Fred) LEMATTY of St.Louis, a daughter, Helen Virginia born 12 May 1930.

17 July 1930

Mrs. Sadie COLVIN DAVIS, of Keokuk, died at the Graham hospital Sunday. She was born 6 November 1863 at Sandusky, the daughter of William and Mary VANAUSDALL COLVIN. Leaves one daughter: Mrs. Orin RHODES of Keokuk, a sister Mrs. R.R. GRIMES of Montrose, brother, G.H. COLVIN of Denmark. Services held at Sandusky.

24 July 1930

George JOHNSON was killed at the MCMANUS Quarries Friday by a falling rock. He was born 12 August 1882 at Galland the son of John and Mary Ann JOHNSON. Lived in Galland all his live. Married Pearl SILVERS 29 April, 19 years ago. Had eight children, five of whom are living, Mrs. JOHNSON died seven years ago on 10 March. Surviving children, Helen, Irene, Vada, Chester and Iola Fern, all at home. Also surviving his parents, six brothers and three sisters; Peter, Lambert, John, Charles, Edward, and William all of Montrose except Charles who lives in DesMoines, Mrs. S. MILLER of Chicago, Mrs. L.D. VERMAZEN and Mrs. D.W. EGE both of Montrose. Funeral held at the Ege home.

7 August 1930

John H. MILES, a former resident of Montrose, died at his home on fifth street, Sunday. He was born 9 March 1870 in New London, the son of Arvis H. and Elizabeth J. HUNTINGTON MILES. Most of his life was spent in Lee county. He married Adella TERRY of Ut and had three children. She preceded him in death. In 1913, he married Bertha NOWLIN at Montrose, who survives, with the following children., Otis of Denver, Co. and Mrs. Lillian O'SHAUGHNESSY, and Mildred MILES, both of Ca. Also a step son, Herbert NOWLIN of Elpaso, Tx. and the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. N.J. HANCOCK of Keokuk, Mrs. Lucy WALLACE of Keokuk, Mrs. John TRUMP of New Boston, Carl MILES of Iowa City, Iowa and F.H. MILES of Ca. Buried Montrose.

DEDICATE STONE SATURDAY


The dedication program of the monument which was laid in the corner of the school house lot, in honor of The First Orchard Planted in Iowa, will be held on Saturday 16 August. On that day the crowd will meet at the Anthes Hotel in Ft.Madison, and from there they will be taken for a visit at the Iowa State Penitentiary. From there the crowd will visit the Gem City Vineland Company's 56 acres of Concord Catawaba Grapes. The discussion of this sight will be lead by T. J. MANEY of Ames. They will then visit the 80 acres of cantaloupes, sweet potatoes, small fruits and apples of the Curtis Brothers, this to be lead by C.V.HOLSINGER, also of Ames. Dinner will then be served by the Womens Civic Club of Montrose. A well arranged program is also planned for the afternoon, which will be held at the monument in Montrose. A large crowd is expected to attend this occasion, come out and spend the day with the people in Montrose.

21 August 1930

Funeral services were held Sunday from the Methodist Church here for the late Wayne GEE who met with accidental death by falling rock at the MCMANUS quarry. Buried Montrose. Leaves wife and four children.

Four men were killed when a roof seam apparently gave way and fell on them. Wayne GEE, Wesley CAGLE, Clyde BRYANT, and Cecil WHITE.

Representatives of the Iowa State Historical Society and the Iowa State Horticultural Society was present at the dedication of the rock.

28 August 1930

Aaron SPEAKE son of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. SPEAKE, married Lucill BAER of Kahoka, Missouri, 21 August 1930.

Miss Eva SMITH, of Montrose married Glen SCHLAGENBUSH of Viele 20 August 1930. Bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George SMITH, groom is son of Mr. and Mrs. John SCHLAGENBUSH of Viele. ( I believe this is the Mrs. SCHLAGENBUSH that taught at Montrose.)

6 September 1930

Barney J. COOK of Ft.Madison, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Frank COYNE near Montrose last Wednesday. He was born in Ft.Madison 8 October 1860 and has been here all his life. On 28 October 1882, he married Gertrude WHITTING. She preceded him about four years ago. Leaves two daughters, Mrs. Carl CONRAD of West Point, Mrs. Frank COYNE of Montrose and one brother John COOK of Quincy, one sister, Mrs. Geo. SHUPE of Ursa, Illinois.

Anna Benice RANGE, six year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry RANGE of Ft.Madison, was killed Saturday when the car her father was driving and another car sideswiped each other.

11 September 1930

Jacob George RENZ of Donnellson, died 3 September 1930. He was born in Charleston 31 January 1878, the son of George and Louise Wahrer RENZ. On 9 June 1906, he married Miss Mary WEDEL of Bismark, N. D. Leaves wife, five brothers and two sisters; John of Sioux City, Charles of Edgaley, N.D., Herbert of Macomb, Illinois, Edwin and Theo of Charleston, Mrs. Louise STERTZ of Keokuk, Iowa, and Esther CHANCE of Argyle. His father died 7 April 1930. Buried Charleston.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank HAWES a new girl born Tuesday in Donnellson. Mother is Ethel CLOUD.

Miss Nora BRODSKY, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank BRODSKY of Argyle, married Theodore Roosevelt DAVIS, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank P. DAVIS. Will live in Keokuk.

Friend and relatives here received word of the death of Morris SKYLES, 23 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. H.A. SKYLES, of Ft.Madison on Friday. Buried Oakland cemetery. He was born 15 April 1907 in Jefferson Twp. and in 1910, the family moved to Ft.Madison. Besides his parents he leaves two sisters, Mrs. Andrew J. FISHER off Sparrows Point, Maryland, and Mrs. Arvill M. YOUNG of Ft.Madison and his grandfather, Thomas SKYLES.

Mr. R.L.REED celebrates 90th birthday.

2 October 1930

A tornado struck here last Thursday doing lots of damage. W.H.BELT died in the Sacred Heart hospital from injuries sustained when his home was made into kindling wood and carried off its foundation. J.T. VERMILLION, who was hurt in the wreckage of his barn, died a short time later.

Margaret KENNEDY, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.P. KENNEDY married Hal Gilbert KING 27 September 1930, Hollywood, Ca.

Mr. and Mrs. Charles FARRIS, Jr., have a new son born 3 October 1930.

16 October 1930

William H. SKINNER, was one of eight children born to William W. and Edith SKINNER, born in Montrose, 27 July 1863 and died in Keokuk 11 October 1930. Leaves two sisters, Mrs. Ida SHAW and Mrs. Hulda BARBER, one brother, David SKINNER all of Montrose. Funeral was held in Montrose.

30 October 1930

John W. WARSHIME, of Montrose, died at his home this morning. He was born 5 July 1856 in Appanoose county, Iowa. Had been in Montrose about eight years. He came to Jefferson Twp. in 1863. He married Mary E. SCHELS HURFFMAN in 1894, and leaves besides his wife, daughter: Mrs. Anna KALINE of St.Louis, three grandchileren, a sister, Mrs. Sarah HART of East St.Louis. Buried in Montrose.

Velma Ruth LAMB, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Irvin LAMB, of Montrose, died Wednesday. She was born 10 May 1929 in Montrose. Besides parents, she leaves one sister, Lois May and her grandparents. Buried Montrose.

13 November 1930

George W. KIEL, born in Ft.Madison 8 March 1850, died at his home in Jacksonville, Illinois, 5 December 1930. (something wrong with this date) He married Miss Margaret RAY in Montrose. In 1875, they moved first to Keokuk then to Jacksonville. They had five children, two of whom preceded their father in death, Ella, a daughter died in infancy and John B. died a few years ago from an accident. Those that survive: Mrs. Lillian HADLY of Tx., Sidney of N.Y,. and Rollin of Jacksonville, Illinois. There is only one remaining, A.E. KIEL of Des Moines. Services were in Montrose, but it didn't say where he was buried.

20 November 1930

Paul SCHENK drowned while fishing near the dam. He leaves wife and one child. He is a brother of Mrs. Leslie BOYD.

27 November 1930

Mr. and Mrs. P.W. BOWEN celebrate their 50th. Park Wright BOWEN and Miss Lena LeVon REEVES were married at home of the bride, Mr. and Mrs. James REEVES 23 November 1880. 

4 December 1930

Edward WATERS, former Montrose man died at his home near Davenport, Iowa. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles WATERS. Survived by mother, Mrs. Charles WATERS. His father died since the family left here. He was about 34. Leaves besides his mother, a twin sister, Edna Jane of Washington D.C., Dona and Erma of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and also a young wife.

William O. RIDDLE, son of Geo and Margaret RIDDLE, was born 14 December 1872 in Scott county, Illinois and died at his home in Medialpolis, Iowa, 20 November 1930. He was one of seven children, two died in infancy, and his only brother, Geo. Died 9 January 1912. When an infant his parents moved to Montrose, where he spent a happy boyhood. On 30 November 1898, he married Kate D. ELTING? And had four, ELTING?, Harriett and Helen, one daughter having died in infancy. Buried Kostuth cemetery. 

P. Henry HART of Keokuk, died yesterday. He was born 24 May 1885 in Montrose. He was a retired farmer. Married Mrs. Sophia HEAD at Carthage, Illinois in 1902. Leaves wife, and the following children: William H. of Grand Forks, N.D., H.E. HART of Bellville,Illinois, John B. of St.Louis, Missouri, Dr. Magnolie Carolson of East St. Louis, and Mrs. Mary JACKSON, East St.Louis. A half brother, William Emmitt of Hannibal, Missouri and the following step children: Riley MAREHIME of East St.Louis, Mrs. Pearl BRANT and Elmer F. HEAD of Keokuk, John C. of Montrose and Earl F. of Hamilton. Buried Montrose.

The Montrose Library has moved from the school library room to a room in the rear of the bank.

17 December 1930

Mr. and Mrs. Clarence LEMATTY have a new boy, Clarence W. LEMATTY Jr. born last Sunday.
