Daniel migrated to Auburn Township, Susquehanna County, Pa., where he spent the rest of his life. We can find no record of the time when either he or his brother Abraham left their former homes in N. J. to come to Pa. He acquired land in Transue, Pa., (So named for residents by the name of Transue, who were lineal descendants of John Frederick and Maria Barbara Brotzman.) Here he first built a log house and shelters for farm animals and crops. Later, he build a good, modern house, a barn and other necessary buildings. He as a successful farmer and apiarist. He also raised luscious grapes and made and sold some wine - a part of the business he had formerly shared with his father, Jacob Brotzman, in New Jersey. His youngest son, Norval Brotzman, took over the farm in the later years of Daniel's life.
Daniel married Elizabeth Transue, daughter of John C. Transue and Jane Strunk, in 1845 in , Of, PA. Elizabeth was born on 1 Jul 1822 in , , PA and died on 17 Jul 1866.

" Aged resident of Kalkaska passes. Mrs. Susie Rugg, widow of R.F. Rugg, one of the older pioneers of Kalkaska county, passed away at her home in Kalkaska village Tuesday, September 29, ath the age of 80 years. Death claimer her husband many years ago. Mrs. Rugg formerly lived in Rapid River township at Rugg, a place named for her late husband. She moved to Kalkaska several years ago and had made her home here since. Two grandchildren, daughters of Ed Rugg, have been living with her. Funeral services were held this (Thursday) afternoon at 2:20 at the the Methodist Church, Rev. J.B. McGinners preaching the sermon and L.M. Clapp acting as undertaker. Interment was made at Evergreen cemetery. Fours sons, Edward of Eckerman, James of Kalamazoo, Ray of Holland, and Ward of this village were in attendance at the funeral."
From notes of Thelma Louise Rugg: Susie Brotzman and brother Charley were brought up by persons other than their parents. Susies mother had cousins named Lacey. Thelma Louise Rugg has old photographs saved by Susie Brotzman with addresses and names on them. They are: Great Grandma Transue - Laceyville, PA and sister; Great Grandpa Transue - Tunkhannock, PA; Grandpa Transue - Towanda, PA; Grandpa & Grandma Brotzman - Le Raysville, PA. From these pictures Richard Robert Moran has made the best assumptions as to how these individuals shown in the pictures are related. Richard Robert Moran acquired a copy of these pictures Dec 1990. The relations appear in relative to Susie Brotzman kids. So great grandpa Transue is actually Grandpa Transue. According to Verna Lu Marie Johnson they were from the Hudson River.

From the notes of Verna Lu Marie Johnson: Rolando was a corporal under General Sherman. He served with the 25th N.Y. Engineers in 1861. Kalkaska 1876. He was sheriff of Kalkaska County, MI 1892-1896.
From Portrait book: "Rolando F. Rugg, Sheriff of Kalkaska County, is one of the ablest and most popular men who have ever held this responsible position in this county, and the interests of law and order have never been better subserved than by him. He also deserves special mention as one of the bravest soldiers during the late war, at which time the valuable services rendered his country won for him a distinguished military record. Mr. Rugg made his advent into this county in 1876, at which time he purchased land in Rapid River Township, which was then in an unimproved state. He made this place his home until 1893, when he moved into the village of Kalkaska. He still has in his possession one hundred and twenty acres of valuable land, fifty acres of which are under a high state of cultivation and improved with a good residence, barns and necessary out-buildings. Our subject was born in Susquehanna County, Pa., Mary 13, 1843, and is the son of David H. and Anna E. (Lacey) Rugg, natives of Vermont. They were married in the Keystone State, where the mother's death occurred in 1867, when in her fifty-sixth year. The father is still living, and is an official member of the Baptist Church. He is a millwright by trade, which business he has successfully followed for many years. In politics he was a Whig until the formation of the Republican party, since which time he has been a member of its ranks. For fifteen years he held the office of Justice of the Peace, and during that time had the good-will of the entire community, whom he served satisfactorily. The parental family included five children, two of whom died young. Of those living, our subject is the eldest; Henry L. is engaged as a butcher in Binghamton, N.Y.; and Eva is the wife of Lester Smith, of Laceyville, Wyoming County Pa. Rolando F. remained in his native county until eighteen years of age, in the mean time attending the schools taught in the neighborhood. In the spring of 1861, on the outbreak of the Civil War, he enlisted as member of Company D, Fiftieth New York Engineers, and served with his regiment until July 1865, when he was discharged and mustered out under general orders. He was private Orderly under General Meade for fourteen months, and was present at every engagement in which the Army of the Potomac participated from the battle of the Wilderness to the close of the war. During these long years he was never injured or taken prisoner. After fully recuperating from the hardships of a soldier's life, Mr. Rugg learned the trade of a carpenter at Bradford, Pa., which business he followed exclusively until coming to Michigan, when he began contracting and building. He was married, January 23, 1866, to Miss Susie, daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth Brotzman, who was born in Susquehanna County, Pa. To whom have been born ten children, of whom Wilber is living in the state of Washington. The other members of the family are Ward, Addie, John, Edward, and Eva (twins), Fred, James, Len and Ray. In politics Mr. Rugg is a stanch Republican. He has held various township and school offices, and is now serving his second term as Sheriff of Kalkaska County. He possesses in a full degree the necessary resolution, dignity and self-possession, and the high courage that faces every danger unflinchingly, while he is at the same time just and humane in the discharge of his duties. He has been a member of the County Republican Committee, and at various times has been sent as a delegate to various conventions of his party. Socially he is a member of Colonel Barker Post No. 84, G. A. R., and is prominent Odd Fellow and Knight of Pythias. When Mr. Rugg paid the freight on his household goods on coming to Michigan, he had not a dollar left with which to make the family comfortable. This did not discourage him, however, but with characteristic energy he set to word to cultivate his land, which was seven miles from any town, and, as time passed on, he was enabled to pay for it. On each Saturday he would walk to the nearest town and carry home provisions. At that time there was only one team of horses in the county, and at Sunday-school convention which he attended shortly after coming here, he counted fourteen ox-teams, which was quite an unusual sight for him, having come from Pennsylvania. In those early days he was compelled to labor early and late in order to support his family, and the success which is now his is due entirely to his own exertions."

"Rolando Francis Rugg - Susie Brotzman Rugg. Married in Laceyville Penn. Had 11 children came to Mich lived in a log house on Hancen Rd. Built 1st farm at Rugg the small place of named after them. Had a store, railroad stopped from Rapid City to Kalkaska bringing their mail. My grandfather was 1st postman delivered mail by horse. The dam was built had a saw mill also. Rugg Hall & about 12 families built there. Woods, Harley, Smiths, Ed. Rugg, Art Cochran, Cumifords, Tanners, Hansens, Rice, Buckles, Rolando Rugg, Brother Cochran as the curve past grandparents house. Wilbert run the store. So at one time a nice group of folks. The winters were rough Grandpa Rugg would ride his horse. One day it was as bad he walked stopped at Root's Grocery Store to get warm next to the in Koisky Bank (On the corner) to cash his $12 check he received for being a Corporal in Civil War. He dropped over dead in the store, 1909. (Before I was born so I never was him). Moved to Mich in covered Wagon and 8 children born in Penn."

"Wilbur Rugg who died in British Columbia, was tenderly cared for in last illness. Ward Rugg, of Kalkaska, has received the following particulars concerning the death of his brother, Wilbur Rugg, which will be of interest to many. Kamloops, B.C. Dec 29, 1897.
Ward Rugg, Esq., Kalkaska, Mich., My Dear Sir:
We buried your brother yesterday in our city cemetery about a mile out of town, on a slope between the foot-hills and the river Thompson. The location is a very pretty one and the spot is marked so that it can be identified at any future time. His poor body was very nicely encased in a casket and conveyed by hearse at a total cost of $45.00. The burial was conducted by myself. There is not property remaining belonging to your brother. except an old camp stove, camp bed, and blankets, which I suggest might be given to a neighbor who was camped beside him on the river bank, and who was carrying in his wood for him, being unable to do that for himself. He also had a watch I can send to you, perhaps better still, give to another who has been very attentive to your brother ever since I prevailed upon the government authorities to provide him more comfortable quarters, in a cabin in town. This man remained with him to the end. I do not know his name, (more than Donald), but he was kindness in the extreme, and he has not ask for anything in the way of remuneration. Your brother died in the assurance of faith; faith in Jesus Christ, not only as the Savior of the world, but as his personal Savior from sin, and I believe he trusted in him implicitly. From the first time I prayed with him in his little tent by the river, he responded earnestly to all my prayers in his behalf, and prayers in behalf of bothers and friends at home so far away. I hear that your brother did some prospecting in the north, but whether he as able to discover anything of value I do not know. That could be found out by corresponding with the government at Victoria, B.C., or by writing the Commissioner of Mines. He died without making a will, perhaps having nothing to leave behind, but I am sure he has treasure laid up in the better land awaiting him. The disease which ended his life was quick consumption. I hope and pray that a kind and loving providence will support you all in the very sad bereavement and that you are all well prepared for the summons when it comes to you one and all. Be assured that you have my sympathies and prayers. I should be delighted to hear from you at length in reply to this. Yours very sincerely, Rev. S. S. Osterhout, Box 168, Kamloops, B.C.
P. S. Your brother had $60.00 in cash when he arrived. He spent $15.00 before I brought him from the river bank and remaining $45.00 went to his funeral. The lawyer, who has also been very considerate, will send you the watch if you say so. S.D."

"Last Rites Held Wednesday For John Rugg, 72. Funeral services were held at the Berg Funeral Home at 2:00 Wednesday for John Rugg, 72, who passed away in Petoskey, Sunday, Feb. 23. Burial was made in Clearwater Township cemetery. Mr. Rugg was born at Lacyville, Pennsylvania and came to Kalkaska county when a boy, with his parents to start a community which still bears the family name. He as married to Ida Carothers July 7, 1901. Surviving besides the widow are, one daughter, Mrs. Georage Underhill, or Rapid City; two brothers, Jim of Middleville, and Roy of Grand Rapids."

"Mrs. John Rugg passed away February 14, at her home in Clearwater township, at the age of 77 years. She and her husband moved to their farm home in 1903, and resided there until death. They were affectionately known to most of the local young people as grandma and grandpa and were never happier than when the youth of the community met at their home. She was proceeded in death by her husband by nearly four years. Ida Belle Carothers was born near Walkerton, Indiana, April 17, 1873 to George and Catherine Carothers. The fourth in a family of five children, all of whom preceded her in death, expect one brother, Bill. When the children were young the family moved northward. The father, a mill owner and operator, followed the timber north until they came to Kalkaska county where they lived for over sixty years. Surviving the deceased are, one brother, William Carothers of Kalkaska; one daughter Mrs. Essie Underhill, six grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at the Berg Funeral Home, Burial was in the Clearwater cemetery."

"Ex-Kalkaska Sheriff - Dies; Rites Tuesday. Kalkaska. - E. D. Rugg, 65, former Kalkaska county sheriff, died Saturday at his home here. Born in Rapid River township, he had been a lifelong resident of the county except for one year spent in Idaho. He served as sheriff from 1916 to 1929, moving then to Idaho, but returned in 1921 to act as foreman of county roads. He also had been employed by the state highway department division here as a foreman for three years and from 1928 until 1939, when he retired, ran a gasoline station. Surviving are the widow, Lula Belle; two sons, Earl of Grand Rapids and Don of Detroit; three daughters, Mrs. Maxine Ryckman of Kalkaska, Mrs. Helen Kizer of Morley and Mrs. Thelma Johnson of Detroit; three brothers, James of Middleville, Ray of Grand Rapids and John of Rapid City. "Funeral Rites held Tuesday Afternoon, Berg Funeral Home. Edward D. Rugg, prominent resident of Kalkaska county all his life, passed away at his home on Saturday, July 24, 1943. He was born in Rapid River township February 20, 1878, having attained the age of 65 years at the time of his death. Mr. Rugg was engaged in farming, at which time he was elected to public officer as County Road Commissioner. In the year 1916 he was elected sheriff of the county, which he held until June 1920, when he resigned and moved to Idaho. He again moved back to his home county in 1921, and was foreman of County Roads from 1921 to 1923. For a few years thereafter he was engaged in the lumber industry. He also served as foreman of State Highway Department for Kalkaska county, from 1925 to 1928, when he engaged in operating a gas station. In 1929 he found it necessary to retire on account of ill health. Deceased was always active in anything pertaining to the betterment of the community and county, and had many friends who join the relatives in mourning his demise. Surviving are the widow, Lula Belle; two sons, Earl of Grand Rapids and Don of Detroit; three daughters, Mrs. Maxine Ryckman of Kalkaska, Mrs. Helen Kizer of Morley and Mrs. Thelma Johnson of Detroit; three brothers, James of Middleville, Ray of Grand Rapids and John of Rapid City, also ten grand children. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Berg Funeral Home, Rev. A. R. Ellis officiating, and burial was made in Evergreen cemetery."

Lulu Belle Van Buren, the daughter of Charles and Mary Van Buren, was born in New York state, August 28, 1880 and died June 22, 1969 at the Petoskey Geriatrics and Care Center at the age of 88. She came to Michigan at an early age with her parents who were early pioneers in Rapid River Township, Kalkaska County. She was married to Edward Rugg, December 25, 1901 and is survived by four children, Earl Rugg of Bisbee, Arizona, Mrs. Alvah (Thelma) Johnson, of Alden, Mrs. Leonard (Helen) Kizer of Morley, and Mrs. Willard (Maxine) Ryckman of Kalkaska, 14 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren. Mrs. Rugg was preceded in death by her husband and one son, Donovan, one granddaughter and two great grandchildren. She was a member of the People Church, Bethany Circle, Rebekah Lodge, Past Noble Grand Club and the Golden Age Club. Funeral services were held at the Schwartz-Wolfe Funeral Home, Tuesday, June 24, 1969 at 2 o'clock, Rev. A dedicated member of the Jehovah Witness, for forty years he served congregations in souther Mich, Tenn, and Ariz. At his death, he was a beloved member of the Plainwell Congregation.
Surviving are his wife, Marguerite; one daughter, Mrs. Joylene O'Neill of Grand Rapids; one son, Merlyn of Kalamazoo; 3 sisters, Mrs. Thelma Johnson of Florida, Mrs. Helen Kizer of Morley, Mich, Mrs. Maxine Ryckman of Kalkaska; 6 grandsons; 5 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. "My life history by Marguerite Merry Johnson:
I was born December 25th, 1905 in Kalkaska County on my grandfathers farm, I had a two year old older brother Cecil and two years after my birth another brother Alvah was born.
When I was ten, another brother Clifford was born, who lived only six months.
Soon my parents divorced and we went to live with my grandparents in Rapid City. I helped cook for eight people. Sometimes I placed a lesson for the day on the warming oven of the wood stovewhile I baked pancakes.
I was on the girls basketball team and was in school plays. I always had the comedy part. While I lived with my grandparents they built a new stone house which is still a landmark in Rapid City today.
After high school I enrolled in Detroit Business College, and afterwards gained employment in the office of Detroit Cleveland Navigation Company on the Detroit river for the travel agent. I then went to county Normal in Kalkaska and then on to Michigan State College in Ypsilanti to obtain a teaching certificate.
One summer when home from teaching I was invited to conduct a young peoples meeting at the Methodist church. As the meeting was about to begin, I saw Earl Rugg walk in. He asked me for a date that night. This was the beginning of our courtship and we were married 6 months later May 30, 1927. (Daughter Note: Mother and Dad Eloped)
We moved to Grand Rapids, this is where we raised our family Merlyn and Joylene. These were the depression years but Earl always had work. I returned to teaching when the children were older to help out. We had been a family of Witnesses' for many years as the truth was brought to us in Grand Rapids when Merlyn was three years old.
As a family, we were active in Jehovah's service. In fact we were part of the original congregation of 13 Witnesses.
It has been a privilege to announce an incoming Kingdom that would bring many blessings to all mankind. We sold our home to move where the need was greater. We were in Tennessee for there years, and Arizona for 6 years. We moved back to Michigan because of Dads health.
He died Jan 24, 1979. He was a kind and devoted husband and father and I look forward to seeing him again as Jehovah's faithful servant in the resurrection.
I am proud of my six grandsons and twelve great grandchildren, and of course my children.
It has been as varied life but very rewarding. Jehovah has always been my strength and refuge. I hope to serve him faithfully as long as I can."

"Don Rugg passes in Detroit Monday. Donovan Leslie Rugg of Detroit passes away Monday, May 26, at the age of 53. He was born October 8, 1904, in Rapid River Twp., the son of Edward and Lulu Rugg. Mr. Rugg preceeded his son in death. Don Rugg was a resident of Kalkaska County until about 15 years ago when he moved to Detroit to make his home. He attended Kalkaska High school and was a member of the Union Church of Kalkaska. Surviving besides his wife, Murice, are two daughters, Mrs. Sally Johnson and Mrs. Marilyn Gronato; one son Edward, all of Detroit; three sisters, Mrs. Thelma Johnson, Detroit, Mrs. Helen Kizer, Morley, and Mrs. Maxine Ryckman of Kalkaska; one brother, Earl, of Dickson, Tennessee; also one gradson, Roy Johnson III. "Mrs. Maxine E. Ryckman, 75, of Mancelona, died Mon., June 19, 1995 at the Kalkaska Memorial Health Center. Mrs. Ryckman had been a life-long resident of Kalkaska County. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, and enjoyed writing poetry and short stories. She was active in community service, and enjoyed camping and other family activities. Born on Sept. 30, 1919, in Kalkaska County, she was the daughter of Edward D. and Lulu Belle VanBuren Rugg. On Aug. 20, 1939, in Kalkaska she was united in marriage to Willard A. Ryckman, who survives.
Also surviving are four sons, Willard A. (Rebecca) Ryckman, Jr. of Tampa, Fla., James E. (Patricia) Ryckman of Charleston, SC, Ronald W. (Mary) Ryckman of Meade, Kan. and Douglas L. (Martha) Ryckman of Houghton Lake; one daughter, Mary Sue (Olli) Wendelin of Charleston, SC; nine grandchildren, Shannon, Jefferson, Paula, Ron, Heather, Daniel, Jennifer, Ashley and Cassandra; and six great grandchildren, Jefferson, Michael, Patrick, Rebecca, Alexa and Corinne.
