1. John Canniff died in 1830 in , Ashtabula county, Ohio.

General Notes: Pioneer Families of Southeastern Michigan, p58-59: "Canniff, John was among the first to buy land from the Holland Purchase Co.; and lived in Knowlesville (Ridgeway), Orleans Co., N.Y.. He married Lydia (Morse), possibly daughter of Enos (also see). John supervised the building of the Erie Canal through that area, and died of drowning in Ashtabula Co., Ohio in 1830. After his death, Lydia remained in NY for a time, then purchased in Wheatland Twp., Hillsdale Co., Mich; and lived in 1830 in Pittsford with son, Stephen. Other known children: Enos (preceding) & probably Lewis (following); & possibly Matilda, b. ca. 1826, NY in Lewis household in 1850 census. Lydia married second after 1839 to Stephen Bird (also see). Reference: Portrait & Biographical Album Lenawee Co. MI, Chicago, Chapman Brothers 1888, p 1200"

From the 'Pioneer History of Orleans County, New York' by Arad Thomas, 1871. Knowlesville, situate on the eastern bounds of the town of Ridgeway, as at present bounded, owes its existence to the Erie canal. When work was begun on the canal, but two or three families had located on the ground now covered by the village. Mr. William Knowles, the pioneer and founder of the village, was the first settler. He took up from the Land Company and settled upon lot three, township fifteen, range three, in the winter of 1815. Shortly after John Caniff took up one hundred acres of the north part of lot fifty-nine, in township fifteen, range three, adjoining Mr. Knowles' land and east of it. The first tree cut on the site of Knowlesville stood where the residence of R.P. Wood now stands, and was felled in March, 1815.

John married Lydia Morse.

Early History of Michigan book: "STEPHEN CANIFF. Was born in Knollsville, N.Y., May 30, 1816. When a young man he taught winters and worked at farming summers. He settled on a farm in Pittsford, Hillsdale county, in 1836. In 1843 he sold out and bought a farm in Litchfield, where he resided until his death, November 23, 1876. He was a Republican. In 1867 a Representative in the legislature." from Early History of Michigan with Biographies of State Officers, Members of Congress, Judges and Legislators, 1888, Lansing: Thorp & Godfrey, State Printers and Binders, page 151. The book was published as a result of Act 59, 1887. Book in Michigan Technological University library, Houghton, MI.

Hillsdale county, MI book: "Hon. Stephen Canniff was born in Knollsville, N.Y., May 30, 1816. At an early age he was thrown upon his own resources. He obtained a good common- school education, and for several years worked as a farm hand in summer and taught school in winter. In 1839 he was married to Miss Maria Boven, of the town of Riga, Monroe Co., N. Y. She was born in Schoharie, N. Y., Jan 15, 1820. When a child her parents removed to Monroe County, where they died. In 1836, Mr. Canniff came to Michigan, and purchased a farm in the town of Pittsford, Hillsdale Co. He returned East and in 1839 came on with his family. In 1843 he disposed of his farm in Pittsford and came to Litchfield, where he resided until his death, which occurred Nov. 23, 1876. Mr. Canniff was prominently identified with Litchfield, and for many years represented the town in the Board of Supervisors. In 1867 he was elected to the Legislature. In his religious affiliations he was a Congregationalist, and was a liberal supporter of church enterprises. He was an ardent friend of education, and did much to advance educational interests. Mr. Canniff was emphatically a self-made man. Starting in life with only his natural resources for his capital, he achieved success, and was esteemed for his fidelity and ability in public as well as private life." [photo of Stephen Canniff also included]

notes of Lelia Faith Canniff: "Grandparent Canniff's, mine, had an upright and wing white house, farm level, stone fences half up the post and rider tops. In the fall the family spent an evening making candles. Once a year a shoemaker came, measured feet of family then made them all shoes. Grandpa thought my mother would also but balked she had bought her own shoes and clothes for years. He thought a city girl not right for a farmer; she made a very good one. They were there for a while then to a place of their own. Grandfather gave them an iron teakettle, heavy, she hated it, tried to break it, and at last it did break."

Obituary: "Hon. Stephen Canniff died at his residence in Litchfield, Nov 22d, of dropsy, aged sixty one years. Mr. C., was one of the early settlers and a prominent citizen of that town for many years. He was elected supervisor of Litchfield served years in sucession, and represented the Second District of the county in the Legislature. He always enjoyed the highest respects of the community in which he resided. For several years past he suffered from the disease of which he died."

In the 1872 Atlas of Hillsdale County, MI shows that Stephen Canniff owned 64 acres on a 'L' shaped piece of land in the east half of the SW corner of section 3 in Litchfield Township. An S. Canniff also owned 20 acres in the NW corner in the same section. Richard Moran went to the Litchefield farm in July 1992. Two small red barns from the 1800's are still in good shape. The land was all cleared and the fields were planted. A very nice home that must have been recently remodeled is on the farm. It may be the original home. The current owners where not in. In 1995 he was able to meet with owners and view the inside of the home.

Could not find a Knollsville, NY, but there is a Knowlesville, Orleans, NY. From the notes of Lelia Faith Canniff: At one time Canniff had a prefix of 'Mc' added to the name. Strict, red hair. Was a New Englander. From 1850 Census: farmer, value of real estate $1000. The death record says Stephen was his father.

note of Lelia Faith Canniff: My Canniff grandparents farmed in Litchfield, Hillsdale County. Congregationalists Stephan one term in State Legislature. At one time prefix Mc was on Canniff name. He may have been of Scotch decent. He was strict, domineering, and red haired. Grandfather Canniff was a Yankee.

IGI gives Chauncy B. Canniff to Lemira W. Perry

From the notes of Lelia Faith Canniff:
"They lived in South part of State for five years, in Cass County and near Three Rivers. My father came to Manistee County, bought a quarter section, 160 acres it had a house, frame, not logs like the neighbors, mostly Civil War veterans and homesteads. In February 18, 1874, they came to Manton by train, (old G, R, & I road) then to Sherman, Wexford Co., by stage then walked the nine miles to a neighbors though the snow. Gilberts, their farm on North side of ours, Judge Parm Gilbert's parents & it meant that son Parm left home, to Traverse City, a lawyer and later Judge. He was the graduation speaker at Alden for Alice's class. He had 9 brothers and sister. Mother nice, father strict and disagreeable.
Wet clothes for mother, long skirts, under wear not like present wear. The farm had big stand of fine trees. They were in way of farm crops so cut down, piled and burned. Such a sacrifice. A man on train told my father not to burn trees, they would be valuable later, right.
The first five years after marriage spent in southern Michigan, then moved to 160 acre farm in Cleon Township, Manistee County. In 1890 the family moved to the new village of Copemish, in same township 5.5 miles to take charge of the gristmill being built. Mr. Canniff owned a share and was the president and manager. They owned 83 acres on edge of village. In 1895 moved to Benzonia, Benzie County, until 1899. They moved back to the farm until 17 Mar 1904. Then to Helena Twp., Antrim Co. In 1908 moved to Bellaire. In 1909 Clam Lake again. On 18 Feb 1910 to Traverse City on Sixth Street until 1912 (1915?) south of city. Moved to 855 Webster Street until death of spouse. Chancy was the Supertent of Sunday Schools in Congregational church wherever they lived. Belonged to Grange, Odd Fellows and Forresters. Took prominent place in Community. The Canniff family moved to Benzonia, Benzie County on May 1st. 1895 where they owned 12 acres, rented some. Was Supt. of S.S. there and active in other public work, Supervisor there and later. He belonged to Grange O.O.O.F. and I.O.F. She belonged to Grange and Rebekahs, was Noble Grand at one time. In 1899 spring they moved back to their 160 acre farm in Cleon, Manistee county, lived there until 1904. To farm in Helena Township, Antrim County on Clam Lake. 1906 they moved to Bellaire, 1907 back to Perry's part of farm on Clam Lake. 1908 they moved to 6th. St., Traverse City later to farm south of City then 855 Webster St. 1915 until her death on April 7, 1919. He lived there a time them moved to 'Pnys' Helena Twp., Antrim County until death Oct 12, 1921. "

From book: 'Chauncey B. Canniff. Prominent among the industries of Manistee County are its milling enterprises, and the men who have worked in that line have contributed effectively to the advancement of their communities. The Copemish Roller-mill Company, of which Mr. Canniff is President, has established and successfully conducted a flourishing business, and has gained a reputation for progressive methods and reliable dealings. Mr. Canniff was born in Litchfield, Hillsdale County, Mich., April 7, 1846, and is the son of Stephen and Maria (Bovee) Canniff, both of whom were born in New York State. He is one of a family of three sons and three daughters, five of whom are still living. Susan M. is the wife of Joel M. Valentine; Helen married James Dicks; Chauncey B., of this sketch, was the next in order of birth; Charles B. is a resident of Oregon; and Julia L. is the wife of George Lovejoy. The father of our subject was a farmer by occupation, and in order to carry on that vocation more profitably he located in Michigan, making the trip here in 1840. For a short time he lived in Wheatland, Hillsdale County, and then returning to his home in the East, remained there until 1844, when we again find him a resident of Michigan. On his return hither he carried on farming near Litchfield, where he died in 1876, aged sixty-four years. His good wife survived him until 1887, when she, too, passed away, aged sixty-seven years. They were devoted members of the Congregational Church, in which the father served as Deacon and Trustee. Among his fellow-townsman he was very popular, which fact evidenced by his election to the State Legislature in 1866. For a period of two years he filled that responsible postion, representing his constituents in a manner highly satisfactory to them. For eleven years he was Supervisor of his township, and socially was highly regarded as a man of integrity. The maternal grandfatherof our subject was Jacob Bovee, who for a number of years made his home in Mohawk County, N.Y., but later in life was a resident of Genesee County, N.Y., where his death occurred at the age of seventy years. Chauncey B. Canniff was reared upon his father's farm in Hillsdale County, and when quite young attended the district schools of the locality. Later, however, he supplemented the knowledge there gained by a course in the village schools. For two years after attaining his majority he lived at home, and then starting out in life for himself, purchased a tract of eighty acres of land in Berrien County, near Three Oaks. A year later he sold this farm, and with money thus obtained bought forty acres in Cass County, where he made his home for about three years. February 18, 1874, Mr. Canniff came to Cleon Township, then a part of Wexford County, but now within the bounds of Manistee County, where he became the proprietor of a quarter-section of land, and this he placed under excellent tillage, and still has in his possession. His marriage, February 18, 1869, united him with Miss L. W. Perry, daughter of Peter and Rhoda (Shulters) Perry and to them were born three sons and two daughters. Those living are Faith L. and Perry F. Mr. and Mrs. Canniff are worthy members of the Congregational Church, and he is serving as Deacon and Trustee in the church at Copemish. He is greatly interesed in Sunday-school work, and for twenty-four years was Superintendent of that department of church work. Is was on the 26th of April, 1890, that Mr. Canniff came to Copemish. The previous winter he has aided in the erection of the flouring-mill, and is now the President of the company that operated the concern. Since coming to this place he has given his undivided attention to securing the success of the business. The mill has a capacity of fifty barrels of flour per day, and in connection with this the company has a feedmill and buckwheat stone. The officers, besided our subject, are R. Williams, Vice-President; and F.W. Clark, Secretary and Treasurer. At the present time Mr. Canniff is filling the position of President of the Village Board, and has been School Director ever since the organization of the of the district to which Copemish belongs. He was elected Supervisor of Cleon Township in 1877, filling the office eight years successively, and for three years was President and Treasurer of the Farmers' Mutual Insurance Company of Manistee, Benzie and Mason Counties. In politics he is a stanch supporter of Republican principles. He is a man of good business ability, well informed, and has the regard of the entire community."

11. William H. Canniff (Lewis B.3, John1) was born on 22 Oct 1847 in Litchfield, Hillsdale, MI.

General Notes: Portrait and Biographical Album, Hillsdale county, Mich., Chicago, Chapman Brothers, 1888, p 995-996: "William H. Canniff. George Stephenson did more for the world than he or the most sanguine of his colleagues dreamed would ever be possible. The commerce of the world would be an impossibility without his discovery and application. With this it is a miracle. The present sketch is a brief compendium of one who is officially connected with one of the great railroads linking the Eastern market with the Western producer, and so far as his intelligent ability allows, aids in producing the marvelous results of the above. William H. Canniff, Division Superintendent of the Lansing Division of the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Railroad, who makes his headquarters at Hillsdale, is a native of this district, and was born at Litchfield on the 22d of October, 1847, and is the eldest son of a family of three children born to Lewis B. Canniff and wife, both natives of New York State. The maiden name of his mother was Matilda L. Hatch, who, like her husband, was born in Orleans County, in the above State. Not long after their marriage, however, they removed to Eaton County, Mich., which was their home from the year 1846 until, perhaps, two years later, when they removed to Hillsdale County, and made their home at Litchfield. Having some aptitude and desire toward mechanics, the father of our subject went into the mills near home, but later turned his attention to railroading, went to Lenawee County, and was employed in what was then known as the Michigan Southern & Northern Indiana Railroad, and was stationed at Clayton, acting as agent for several years, but for the past twenty years has been living upon his farm near that city. Our subject attended the school at Clayton, and after completing its curriculum, entered the railroad service in 1863, being then about sixteen years of age. In 1865 he was appointed Station Agent at Trenton; in August, 1868, was promoted to be joint agent at Salem Crossing, and in August of 1882 was appointed trackmaster at Kendall well upon the Air Line of the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Railroad; in December, 1879, was appointed trackmaster of the same road in another district, and in November, 1880, was promoted to his present position. The year following his appointment the company placed under his charge lines of the Detroit, Hillsdale & Southwestern Railroad, and some time later added to this the Ft. Wayne & Jackson Railroad. Upon the 1st of June 1868, our subject was happily married to Miss Grozelia Simmons, of Trenton, a lady of refinement and culture, and eminently fitted to occupy and position in life, whether in the home or in the larger circle of general society. This lady is the daughter of John Simmons, Esq. The marriage has been happily fruitful in the birth of one son, and in him his parents center hopes of future success, and have been glad to watch the development of character, and traits that point toward a noble manhood. He has been names Charles, and will doubtless wear it with honor and dignity. Socially, our subject is connected with order of the Knights Templar, and by them most highly esteemed. This is equally true of the companionship and brotherhood in the Chapter of Blue Lodge. True manhood and nobility of character always demand and will receive admiration and respect from those whose regard is worth receiving."

William married Grozelia Simmons, on 1 Jun 1868.

Children from this marriage were:

   35 M    i. Charles Canniff .
