General Notes: AF 5012-MS, IGI of son Andrew; 'Cogs - the ancestors and descendants of John Gunton and Eliza Jarvis' by David A. Avery, p142; OCFA online cemetery index NR-88-14

From book, p 157: "Isaiah Jarvis was born September 15, 1803 most probably at this father's home in Huntington. Undoubtedly he moved with his family to various locations, and as a young man arrived with them in New Brunswick about 1820. Because his father was too young to be a Loyalist, it is assumed that they emigrated to join family or friends who were United Empire Loyalists. Once again they must have known from their contacts that all the arable land in New Brunswick had been claimed years earlier, and were prepared to search further inland. This supposition is given credence by our first family record which reports that the Jarvis and Flewelling (U.E.L. oringinally from Long Island) families journeyed together from the Maritimes to Norfolk County in Upper Canada. It was during this long trek in 1827 that Isaiah became acquainted with Olive Ruth Flewelling. They married January 30, 1828, shorlty after their arrival and settled in the thriving village of Vittoria.
R.E. Gunton writes, 'My Grandfather was a plasterer and stone mason by trade but in winter time he made and repaired shoes for his own family and others. The author does not remember having his shoes repaired by anyone except his grandfather until he was twelve years old (1875). We then lived near Vittoria Creek, and I remember seeing my grandfather running off lime and burying it in the ground in the fall of the year for next spring's plastering (and it was good plaster they put on in those days). I have often repeated the story of seeing a house that my grandfather had plastered that had been totally destroyed by fire with the plaster still on the ceiling. This may sound like an exaggeration. but it was about an inch thick known as what is called three-coat work.' "

Vittoria in Charlotteville Twp., Norfolk Co, located 4 miles north of Lake Erie and 6 miles southwest of Simcoe. Vittoria founded in 1796.

Avery, p163

Olive L. Jarvis was from Midland, MI. A birth record is there for an Alice S. Jarvis born exactly 1 year later. Based on the census records this must have been a misspelling of Olive L. Jarvis. From the birth record her parents are listed as Mary Jane and Andrew Jarvis. From the ancestral file there is a Andrew Jarvis married to Jane Jennings. In the 1880 Midland Census Jane Jarvis has a 18 year old son listed as William Jennings. From several phone conversations with Dorthy Erickson, Citrus Heights, CA during 1991-2 the the following was learned. [She submitted Andrew to the Ancestral File and Andrew Jarvis is her great great uncle.] She knew that Andrew Jarvis left the area of his birth as an adult. He was married, had two daughters, and was a bit of a drifter. It was her understanding that Andrew was buried near his place of birth.

From COGS book, page 160: "Uncle Andrew Jarvis married and had two sons, Hiram and Isaiah. He married a second wife, Mrs. Jane Jennings, and they had two daughters. He roamed around from place to place, and in the end did not have a home which he could call his own. But I will always remember him as being kind-hearted and generous, and a friend of us boys, and many a good time we had roaming the woods. He knew every bird, tree and bush by name."

General Notes: notes of Kathleen Olive Flaherty:

"Frederick had rheumatic fever as a boy, which weakened his heart. His mother died when he was 2-1/2 years old. When he would get sick, his father's cousins, Grace, Olive and Mable Ford would take care of him. After his sisters died in 1899 and 1901, he and his father lived in boarding houses until his father's death.

When Fred was 15 years old, his father Charles H. Flaherty was hit by a streetcar and died from the injuries. Charles' cousin Henry Ford took Frederick to the hospital in Henry's first car. When Charles died, Grace, Olive and Mable Ford had the visitation for him from their home. Henry Ford was his guardian for a time and put him in Detroit University School with Edsel. When Frederick wanted to go to Colorado for health reasons, Henry wrote a reference letter for him to the Denver office. He worked in New Mexico laying railroad for a time. Since the move west did not prove to be especially beneficial to his health, he returned to Detroit and worked for Park Davis Company and later went to work for Ford Motor Co. as an apprentice and retired as a tool and die maker. Frederick was a frail man of 5'7" and weighed 110 pounds in 1918. At that time he was living at 302 Meldrum Ave. in Detroit. The War Dept disqualified him for military service and placed him in Class V because of heart trouble, mitral stenosis. He married Maybell Moran in 1921 and they bought a home at
5379 Garland Avenue in Detroit. Fred rode the street car to work from there, first to the Highland Park Plant and later to the Rouge Plant in Dearborn.

Fred had a good collection of classic books and liked to read Shakespeare and the Bible, he loved Strauss waltzes and listened to opera on the radio on Saturday mornings. He loved Jack Benny, Charlie Chaplin and disliked Joan Crawford.

Fred and Maybell's first child, Frederick, was taken with instruments at birth and died at 16 days old. Thereafter they raised three healthy children." by Kathleen Olive Flaherty
